Florence, Arizona – The shelter worker that mistakenly euthanized Target, the dog hailed as a war hero, has been fired from the Pinal County Animal Care and Control in Arizona.
According to the New York Times, the worker was officially terminated on Friday.
Prior to the termination, the worker responsible for Target’s death had been on paid administrative leave.
People from across the nation have been both horrified and deeply saddened at the tragic mistake that took the young dog’s life.
Target had been deemed a hero after saving her owner’s life, as well as the lives other soldiers, from a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.
It is shocking and heart-breaking to know that a dog that managed to survive the war-torn country of Afghanistan ended up dying at an animal shelter here in the United States.
the worker should be euthanized…..not the dog!!! RIP
Definitely very sad, but thousands of dogs die the same way every day in this country unfortunately.
Why was TARGET in a shelter?
The worker was fired, but if target was human the worker would be in jail. How messed up is that?
Completely agree. These “dogs” are trained and treated like a soldier in the U.S. Military. They even have rank. If a soldier or any human being was “accidentally” euthanized, prison would be expected.
Anthony with your attempt to emphasize the mass killing of dogs and at the same time minimize the importance of this particular event, you miss the point completely by not understanding the gravity of the situation. A similar parallel would be a hero vet who was mistakenly euthanized at Walter Reed military hospital. Or a hero firefighter, policeman, etc.
I’ve worked directly with these incredible animals in Afghanistan before and my deepest respects and condolences are given for this terrible event.
