Justice. It’s something that there’s not enough of, especially when it comes to animal abuse cases.
But thanks to the diligence of the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals among others, the one-year-old pit bull found starved and barely alive inside an apartment building garbage chute now might get justice.
Kisha Curtis, 28, of Newark, New Jersey was charged Friday with two counts of abandonment and two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance to the animal, according to Matthew Stanton, a spokesman for the NJSPCA.
The pit bull, hailed by animal care workers as a “miracle dog,” was discovered March 16 by maintenance workers inside a garbage chute at the Garden Spires apartment building — a 550-unit complex in Newark, New Jersey notorious for drug trade and other crimes.
The dog was found so brutalized that his bones protruded from his fur and he had no body temperature. Animal care workers with the Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park called it one of the worst cases of cruelty they’ve ever seen.
Newark Animal Control rushed the dog to the 24-hour Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, where he was given a blood transfusion, pumped with fluids and covered with heating blankets.
The dog was later named “Patrick” because he made it through the night and into St. Patrick’s Day. Veterinarians said he would have died within 6 to 12 hours if he hadn’t received medical care.
Curtis, who denied throwing the dog into the chute at the 22-story apartment building, faces two criminal counts and two civil counts, which could result in up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine and community service if convicted.
“It all depends on the judge,” Stanton said. “She , caused the animal to be in that condition. She indicated that she couldn’t take care of him anymore.”
Stanton added that the investigation into the crime is ongoing and that the NJSPCA is working to determine whether anyone else was involved in the abuse and disposal of the animal. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the crime to call the NJSPCA tip line at 1-800-582-5979.
Patrick, meanwhile, is making a slow but steady recovery at the animal hospital. Veterinary staff said the dog is now standing and eating small amounts of food several times a day.

That’s the maximum penalty for felony animal cruelty in New Jersey. There is a nation-wide movement in Patrick’s name, “Patrick’s Law,” to make animal cruelty penalties more severe. Everyone in the animal rights/activism movement thinks that $1,000 is a joke, but it’s the most an abuser will get in New Jersey, for now anyway.
another problem is that animals are considered ‘property’ in law books. It’s not only the penalties that need to change.
I agree this is nothing but a joke, i live in a small east Texas town, and people dump there dogs out all the time. i have more dogs then i don’t know what, thanks to all the trash that drives by and dumps them out, this small town is so bad, a man shot a young girls great Dane for no reason , her mom called the county sheriff and was told there is nothing they can do. this place makes me sick. this woman makes me sick and she needs a long prison sentence and a 10,000 fine. just saying.
I temporarily live just right outside of DT Houston on the north side and dogs get dumped there all the time too. I’ve rescued several but they just keep coming & this city appears to be moving very slow, on getting these dogs that are thrown out like trash, off the streets & into permanent loving homes (where they can). She deserves alot more than a fine and possible 6 months.. that poor dog.. I cannot imagine her looking at him walking around him everyday and not feeding him and discarded him when she either couldn’t stand to look at him or thought he was close enough to death that it was safe.. either way it makes me just sick.

I hate animal abusers!! If she couldnt take care of him, she could have taken him in, what the hell was she even doing with a dog if she couldnt take care of it? I just lost the most precious dog, she was my life and I was hers, I would give anything just to have her back and then I see something like this. This is a woman who should be shut in a room with a bucket for a toilet, no food, no television, 16 ounces of water per day, nothing to read and to just stare at four white walls for a minimum of 7 days. She might then grasp the concept of starvation and learn to show compassion. After that, she can then be sent to jail for a minimum of 5 yrs, banned for life from ever having owning any animal and made to work in a shelter for abused animals, children and women for the next 15 yrs under strict supervision meaning that she would NEVER be left alone with them for even 30 seconds. And I am being compassionate in making this statement. Truly, she should be left on a remote island to starve to death!!! That is how I truly feel!

Words cant describe the pain in my heart that i felt when i saw this poor dog… Its amazing how twisted the Government and the “system” is… You kill a police dog and it carries the same sentence as killing a police officer… i think she should get attempted murder and several other charges added to her case… the whole time i was watching Patricks videos.. reading his stories.. and looking at tha photos.. i couldnt do anything but cry and clutch my rescued pitbull in my arms… and thank god i found him when i did… His name is Hercules… i found him damn near starved and beat half to death.. ears completely chopped off… by his scars and wounds im pretty sure he was muzzled and used as a bait dog… he has came a long way since then.. and is a BEAST now!!! i attached a pic of my lil man 🙂 recently he was diagnosed with Heart Worms.. I really feel that the fine should fit the crime better – like maybe have to repay whatever costs were incurred in taking care of Patrick until he is adopted out to someone who really cares about animals. She should never be allowed to own an animal, fish or anything living, breathing as long as she is on this earth. She should also me made to do some sort of community service work (after jail time of course) like cleaning road kill off the highways!
