Man’s best friends were glad to see them. Seven volunteers, all employees of Delta Dental of New Jersey, arrived bright and early at the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, East Hanover, on June 10 as part of Delta Dental of New Jersey’s Corporate Volunteer Program. This unique program is made up of employees who have committed to enriching the life of the community their company serves. Here’s what they had to say about their dog day afternoon.
“Our volunteers offer their time throughout the year to various charities and organizations,” said Ellen Schworn, human resources administrator, Delta Dental of New Jersey. “Participants are free to choose programs that motivate them personally or they can join corporate-supported programs. This group was really excited about the prospect of learning more about homeless dogs and cats and helping out at the same time.”
During their visit, the Delta Dental staff members spent their time at the shelter helping homeless dogs and cats with their daily needs. The volunteers cleaned cages, washed dishes, and performed other important jobs that are on the shelter’s to-do list.
“By volunteering at the shelter, I realized that it takes a lot of work to help maintain a clean, healthy environment for the cats and dogs,” says Sonia Duran, a claims representative at Delta Dental. “It’s so repetitive and goes on all day — from washing, cleaning, scrubbing, feeding, organizing, and then doing the whole thing all over again — all I can say is WOOF. I was tired, but nevertheless, it was a great experience and I will do it again.”
