Woman Shoots At Dog, Accidentally Kills Husband

A family was grieving Monday after a Texas woman accidentally shot and killed her husband while trying to fend off a Pit Bull that threatened their grandchildren.

Betty Walker and Robert Walker Sr., of Houston, Texas were visiting their son’s Jackson, Mississippi home Friday when a neighbor’s eight-month-old Pit Bull named Cocaine jumped over the fence and reportedly threatened their grand children.

Robert Walker Sr., a 53-year-old retired engineer, threw a brick at the dog while his wife rushed their grandchildren into the house. She returned outside with a .38-caliber revolver, finding her husband holding the barking puppy with both hands.

The grandmother fired two shots — the first striking her husband in the upper right chest, the second hitting the dog’s left front leg, the paper said.

Robert Walker Jr. heard the shots and ran outside. He reportedly found his mother screaming, “I shot your daddy! I shot your daddy!” The son then backed his pickup truck into the yard, lifting his father onto the tailgate while waiting for the police and an ambulance to arrive.

Walker was pronounced dead at a hospital around 5:00pm.

“It was a freak accident,” his son said. “I don’t know what else to say.”

A spokeswoman for the Jackson Police said that the shooting was under investigation. It was not clear whether Betty Walker would face criminal charges.

The injured dog was taken in by animal control officers and its owner, Lazarius Montgomery, could also face charges. Montgomery claimed he was asleep when the incident occurred.

The Walkers were married for 32 years. They had four children together.

“My mom loved my dad,” Walker, Jr. said “They traveled the world together.”

“She said, ‘Please forgive me. I killed your daddy.’ We told her she was only trying to protect him.”

Seriously?? You need to look into the true breed, they are and can be kind and gentle dogs, It’s the STUPID PEOPLE who turn them mean. I know quite a few of them (dogs and people). They (dogs)do agility, fly ball, dock jumping. They are nice – friendly and great athletes. “Very stupid and very dangerous” would definitly refer to the woman in this article (sorry to her and her family BTW), running outside and shooting a gun she  obviously did not know how to use, AND having a loaded gun around young kids?? And from the article it sounds like she was facing her husband when firing the gun, another fault of the ‘dumb’ dog I suppose ?? Again, I am sorry for her families loss, but lets not put all the blame on ‘stupid’  on the wrong victims here. Thank you.

Really?  What is an “attack dog,” then?  To my understanding, Rottweilers, Great Danes, Mastiffs and several other breeds (all of them good family dogs) were originally used to guard estates and hunt poachers.  Bull-and-Terriers (what later became the Pit Bull family of dogs) were used for many things, but attacking humans was never in their working history.

It’s only with shoddy breeding and misinformation (making the Pit Bull a status symbol for hoodlums) that you see aggression toward humans creeping into the breed’s temperament profile.  In fact, their overarching lack of human aggression was part and parcel of their dog fighting history.

The remedy for ignorance is knowledge, and there’s plenty of that available out there.

Don’t forget all terriers were used for some sort of pest control meaning they were bred and trained to kill rats and other rodents.  Does that make anybody with any kind of terrier ignorant?

The mother reported that the dog threatened the children; when a local news team covered the story, all of the children interviewed denied that the dog was acting aggressively.  In this case, it appears that it was not the dog that was the dangerous element, but the panic and hysteria directed at the dog.

The dog should have been contained and supervised, true:  and the woman should have reacted with caution instead of violence.

Unfortunately, it’s that very misperception that lead to this tragedy… If the lady hadn’t been so freaked out by a “pit bull” her husband may still be alive.  Her husband was “holding the puppy with both hands.” – Note that there was no indication that the puppy/dog was attacking her husband, biting, or anything else – some dogs are just vocal.  Not only dog owners but the public at large needs to be better educated about dogs to stop the hysteria.

Here in Ontario, our provincial governement banned owning a pitbull about 2 years ago or any mixes of a pitbulls and even selling pitbulls. Unfortunately when they did that, the animal shelters were bombarded with pitbulls even today. There are some good pitbulls and bad ones too. Not all are bad. It’s really about genetics. You can be a great owner with a bad pitbull or a bad owner with a loving pitbull and even the stereo types…you can be a bad owner with a bad pitbull or a good owner with a loving pitbull. It really comes down to the genetic make-up of that dog. I try not to put the entire dog in one bucket. You can have some exceptions. In general, they are agressive as that is their nature but I’ve seen some poodles that are more agressive than a pitbull but again, it’s all about the genetic make-up of that dog and/or tha owner as well.

I think it is very irresponsible to continue to spread the myth about the nature of these dogs being “genetic”, especially when you are vaguely trying to imply that you speak with any expertize.  By their genetic “nature” the are a loyal and loving breed. It is stupid humans with sloping foreheads that turns these dogs into problems, and it is them who should be put in the gas chambers, not the dogs. Did you know that Golden Retrievers  bite unprovoked more often than Pits?

Linda Hann2010

check your facts:  you are absolutely right.  Not only Goldens do, but German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Chihuahuas are known to be very aggressive and where I live the ratio of Chihuahua bites to Pits is huge – it is in Pits nature to be people friendly, loving and cuddlebugs, but it is their human counterparts that don’t educate them and encourage many of them to be aggressive – so sad.  I have both breeds, a Chihuahua and a Pitbull; the Chihuahua definitely is the aggresssive one, but is an educated lady now and knows her boundaries. 🙂

I agree with Linda and check your facts ….  Cocker Spaniels actually have a known genetic predisposition towards “Rage Disorder”  an actual, hereditary condition that causes them to attack unprovoked.  Why do we never hear about that?  Why aren’t cockers banned in many cities?  It’s all about politics.

Rachaelkind:  I had a cocker that was the biggest butthole.  I got him when I was young – he was stolen from our yard as a puppy and later recovered.  He came back to us and was the biggest jerk – bit the neighbor kid and was generally a butt thereafter.  I always thought it was mistreatment from the dognappers that caused his aggression – thanks for the info about genetic “rage disorder” – maybe that was his problem.

Hi check your facts! In defense of Natalia, and she can correct me if I misunderstood her, I don’t think she meant all pitbulls were genetically bad, I think she meant that bad breeding accounts for bad behavior within the breed, as it does in ANY breed. There are alot of factors that can cause a dog to become aggressive, breeding and environment being the top 2. And this is true for any breed of dog. I think that’s what she was saying, not that all pitbulls were bred to be dangerous.

So if you go purely by genetics then Pits are the friendliest and safest dogs of all to people.  They were purposely bred NOT to be people aggressive because during a dog fight they needed to be separated at times and almost all breed of dog would bite anybody that grabs them in that state of mind.  Pits were bred specifically to be people friendly.  That’s also why they make horrible guard dogs since they’re so friendly.  It’s only through mistreatment that they often times get the way they do and it’s because of the a-holes that think it’s cool and make them tough that they become like that.  I say kill those people.

Essay Writer,
Your post is incredibly ignorant. Pit bulls are very intelligent dogs. What is unfortunate is that people get them, fail to socialize them, and then the dog becomes aggressive …And then people like you blame the dogs.

The dog was behind a fence, which he was able to scale. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Though I’m pretty sure if this was a Yellow Lab named Bailey this story would be reported very differently….

Red, that woman acted out of impulse, was not rational, and that is what led her to this tragic mistake. You are so right – her fear overtook her common sense and caused her husband’s death.  Why do people own guns if they don’t how and when to use them?  In other countries, one MUST pass a psychological test in order to be able to get a license and possess a gun.  Here gun laws are too flexible. Now she will have to live with that for the rest of her life.

No offense, but why would you think that “gun laws” are the answer? Why is it not apparent to people like you that the LAWLESS CRIMINAL WILL NOT FOLLOW ANY GUN LAW.????  These cases where imbeciles own weapons and do absurdly stupid things with them are extremely rare. No “test” could possible predict how anyone is going to behave in any given  circumstance with any degree of accuracy. The only thing your worthless “gun laws” will do is take protection out of the hands of decent law abiding citizens and let the thugs run rampant over society.

I had the most adorable and kind hearted blue nose pit bull and I have two small children, These dogs are not genetically bad, they have been bred that way. Look into the history of the breed and you will see that they used to be reffered to as “the nanny dog” because they were great with children, it’s unfortunate that their strong jaws and athletic features made them Ideal for breeding as fighting dogs. A dogs name should not bring up negetive connotations either, for example a name like cocaine is absolutely horrible, when I got my Dog his name was Diablo, I hated it so we started calling him Bobbo because that’s what my 2 year old son called him. I think pulling a gun on a dog is horrible and it seems to me like the situation was controlled before the gun was taken out. This is a complete shame and my heart is wih the families.

Instead of “they were great with children” you should say “they are great with children.”  Pits are great with children generally because they put up with a lot more than other dogs and they are generally just more affectionate.  Mine just likes kids better than adults because they’re smaller and easier to make friends with.

In England the pitbull is known as the nanny dog because of it’s loyal and caring nature.  I volunteer at an animal shelter and see so many pitbulls come in and the meanest thing they try and do is whip you with their happy wagging tail.  They just want to be by you.
I am so tired of the stereotype of the bad pitbull.  We should not discriminate according to race or creed and we should not ban all dogs by breed.
Having been at the shelter for almost seven years I have seen vicious chihuahuas, labradors, German Shepherds, etc.
Please do not condone banning by breed.

I agree, Pit Bulls can be friendly, playful, good around children. They can be loving and obedient. But, I am tired of seeing young people, especially males getting them as a sort of status symbol. When this happens, they probably do not get the training they need, can possibly become protective and unadjusted, and this could lead to the danger we see each and every day in the media and in the courts. There are so many pit bull terriers in our nations’ animal shelters. Possibly not trained properly and became a threat, or an irresponsible young person realized how expensive and time consuming it was to have a dog. Sure there are many reasons. But breaks my heart. They are beautiful dogs … but much more education is needed towards potential owners. I love German Shepherds, and mine have always been well adjusted, but now stick to Labs … basically because my guests are much more comfortable knowing the gentle personality of the Lab breed.

It was a puppy for goodness sake!! Many people mistake exhuberant behavior from puppies (especially pit bulls) as aggressive behavior. I will bet it was just trying to play. My condolensces to the family, but for goodness sake, don’t point a loaded gun at a loved one and shoot if you don’t know what you are doing. And get educated on breeds of dogs. ANY dog can be dangerous no matter what the breed. Socialization and training are key to owning any dog.

Instead of BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) banning ownership of Pit Bulls we need socioeconomic legislation. No low income people should own Pit Bulls. The vast majority of people who breed and own these dogs for nefarious purposes are low income. The people in the story didn’t seem to be low income, but due to the misaligned reputation of the breed, the lady panicked and shot her husband. And any high income people, ah hem Michael Vick, fighting Pit Bulls should be buried up to their shoulders and have raw meat stuffed in their mouths while wild packs of wolves are let loose on them. Just sayin’!

My husband and I often say they need to put the owners down not the dogs ! My heart goes out to that woman she has to live with that for the rest of her life and that will not be easy, but i read the article and it said the dog was a 8 mth old puppy pit or not I don’t think he would have been that aggressive in just 8 mths I’m just saying. The woman could have shot in the air and scared the dog off and everything would have been fine, she said the dog was barking not growling??? it just doesn’t sound like that mean a dog to me they may have over reacted to the whole thing.
