British Olympic Boxer’s Biggest Fan is Her Dog

Leeds, West Yorkshire, England – Nicola Adams is devoted to her dog, Dexter, and the feeling is mutual. When Adams traveled 200 miles to London this month to compete in the Olympic games, Dexter had to stay at a boarding facility in Leeds. That doesn’t mean, however that her beloved Doberman pinscher had to miss out on Adams’ golden moment.

At Adams’ request, and for a small extra fee, Dexter’s room in the kennel was outfitted with a television. He didn’t miss a moment of her road to the final match, watching as she took on opponent after opponent. When Adams met China’s Cancan Ren for the gold, Dexter’s eyes were glued to the screen, an official Team GB boxing meerkat stuffed toy in his mouth.

Kennel staff says that Dexter couldn’t sit still for the first three rounds, pacing excitedly around his room, but by the fourth round he had stopped and was watching his television avidly, pawing at the glass behind which the TV set sat.

Finally, when Adams knocked Ren down, he paced and looked agitated until the referee raised Adams’s arm, proclaiming her victory.

The boarding facility’s James Cundy said: “We think it is quite unusual… but he can certainly hear Nicola and we think he is referencing that Nicola is on TV.”

Dexter doesn’t spend all day watching television, however.

“Absolutely not,” Cundy said. “That’s the last thing that he’s got to do. He likes to be out and about, getting exercise and generally enjoying himself. He’s on holiday here as well. That’s what we like to say.”

Adams herself is looking forward to returning home to Leeds after her Olympic adventure. She said she would celebrate with a trip to a favorite restaurant, Nando’s and by going home to see her number one fan, Dexter.
