Ya gotta love these two dogs! Here’s the story straight from their rescuers, The Bill Foundation.
The story of Arnold and Dearheart is especially rewarding and encouraging for us because the little miracles matter SO much!
When we rescued Arnold (the big guy) off the streets after his family left him, he was so terribly distraught. I can tell you that I have personally seen that every avenue available had been tried to soothe that poor dog. His anxiety was desperately acute. So many people have tried to help him. Research, time, energy and funds all dedicated to this gentle giant scaredy cat.
So when Dearheart came along with his tiny body and sweet nature and bonded to Arnold, I swear, the angels were singing! We are glad that they found each other against the odds.
The transformation has been incredible. I have seen much in my life with dogs but never so powerful and complete a connection. People have these unfortunate preconcieved notions about bully breed mixes like Arnold and they just are not accurate. He is so inherently sweet and gentle.
For us to be willing to put a nearly 80 lb dog in a crate with a 4 lb dog and trust them to be safe is no small thing! We don’t take that lightly!
I am proud of Arnold for how far he has come and hope he will continue to be an ambassador for his breed in showing people that you just cannot judge a book by its cover.
Hopefully, also, we will help remind people that dogs are precious creatures and should never EVER be abandoned like he was.
We will have to incur many more months of boarding costs waiting for the perfect adopter that will take Arnold and Dearheart together and provide the perfect home. That is a tough burden for a small rescue like ours, so your help in spreading the word is a tremendous gift to us.
I’d like to think in return, that their story will spread a little bit of encouragement and hope to all the other dog lovers and animal advocates out there. And also some inspiration. We all need reminders to look for the miracles in our day. Dogs are such a great gift in doing that for us.
Thanks to the Dog Files for posting your amazing support and sharing the story of Arnold and Dearheart. All of us Bill Foundation have been touched and encouraged in our work to see the tender bond developing between these two formerly bereft creatures. It brings such meaning to our mission in turning every dog we rescue from Abandoned to ADORED.
We are concentrating on Los Angeles applications because we do insist on an application and home check for all of our adoption placements in the interests of finding the safest place possible for our rescues. Even if you cannot adopt today, if you would like to help us, there are ways you can help save more dogs like Arnold and Dearheart.
We are a small rescue group and rely 100% on donations from fundraising to fuel our rescue missions and to support our dogs until they are adopted.
Every cent you contribute goes directly to the dogs’ needs and is fully tax deductible. We are currently feeding and housing nearly 50 rescued dogs so every dollar counts. The purpose of the story is not to raise funds, but if you would like to help us you can donate here.
If you are from the Los Angeles area and would like to adopt Arnold And Dearheart, please contact the Bill Foundation.

i applaud your efforts and what you do, i understand the giant and the mini, as my husband and i have a husky and a 5lb mix chihuahua they do wonderful together and are distraught when separated.
It warms my heart to know there are kind people with room in their heart who care and love these amazing animals. I believe with all my heart that our Creator blessed us with these wonderful friends. He knew at times how lonely some of us would be at times…they really are true friends. We have an obligation to …provide them with a safe and loving home. These two buddies must be adopted together!!!
makes me sad I’m clear across the country. I already have 2 rescues, and even though I love these kinds of stories none has touched me like this one — and those pictures….priceless!!! I would happily adopt the two of them, but hopefully someone just like me is much closer to your shelter. Good luck Arnold and Dearheart! I just know good things will come your way!!!
I would love to adopt them but I live in Texas. I already have a pitbull and chihuahua plus a lab mix. All 3 get along great bc we raise them like our children. I hope they get adopted and given lots of love.
I think it is commendable the lengths you are going to get these two beauties adopted. I have a Pit mix and a chihuahua and they are thick as thieves!!! I wish them the best but I live in Florida-way too far to help them. Good luck and please keep us informed as to their adoption. They are so precious…

If I didn’t live in Virginia, I would take these two babies in a heartbeat. I loved their story. I have friends all over the country and have reposted this in hopes someone will see it and give Arnold and Dearheart their forever home. <3
what a amazing and wonderful miracle!
Hope they get adopted soon. Every animal I have gotten(5 dogs and 3 cats in the last 25 years) have been from our local OSPCA. And everyone has brought joy and happiness to our family.
What a beautiful story! You should write a book for children about these two special friends!!! (I am a children’s librarian BTW) I have a lab/pit cross and he is the gentlest, most loving dog i have ever known! He was a rescue who began his life in Chattanooga, Tennessee and now lives with me here in a small town in Ontario, Canada. He also shares his life with two little friends, a lhasa/pug and mini shih-tzu. I applaud you for the amazing work you do and i wish all the best for a happy future for Arnold and Dearheart!!!
People who do these amazing rescues are very special people and I thank you for all you do with these animals. I rescue anything that moves and needs help myself so I understand the caring it takes for just one person to reach out to a helpless animal. I wish there were stricter laws for animal abuse and neglect. Thank you so much for all you do.
who ever gets these 2 loves hope they get both and not seperate them
please keep us updated on these 2 wonderful dogs, someone will be very lucky…
love comes in all shapes and sizes. We can learn a lot about love from our furry friends
I volunteer w/the organization. The two dogs are doing extremely well. So much so that they are able to be adopted separately now. The choice I hear was a difficult one but it is also difficult seeing them come to the adoption events each week and not find a forever home. Arnold’s ideal home is definitely one with other 4 legged friends. Dearhart needs a home where he can feel safe and sound also. He is such a little bitty thing. They have come so far together. I have walked both. Arnold’s demeanor is just sweet as can be. Everything he does is as if to say, I am on my best behavior so I will never get left again! In the 4x I have seen him, I have never heard a peep out of him. When he did #2, as I bent down to clean it up he put his nose on my cheek as so say, “Thank you for that!” I have family in St. Louis too that I feel would be perfect for Arnold. But, they really want local adoptions only so a home visit can be done. I hope like all of you that he is able to find a loyal, loving home preferably with Dearhart in tow!
