Bulldogs Banned On All Delta Airline Flights

Bulldog

Due to a high percentage of Bulldog deaths on their planes, Delta announced that they are banning dogs from that particular canine family on all future flights.

The new no-fly list was created in response to a Delta study that showed that 6 of the 16 pet deaths on the airline were from the bulldog family.

Of the 16 pets that died on Delta flights in 2010, six were bulldogs. A Delta spokesman said “that the airline saw a pattern involving animals that were prone to respiratory issues.”

Michael Markarian, the COO of the Humane Society of the United States, called Delta’s move a “sensible response”. Many short-faced cats and dogs, such as bulldogs, pugs and Persian cats, have difficulty breathing, especially in confined cargo holds.

Other carriers such as AirTran and Southwest only allow pets that can fit in under-seat carriers to fly; American banned snub-nosed dogs and cats last fall.

“The decision to transport animals ultimately comes down to the owner. Our goal is also to continue to work to do a better job of communicating processes and procedures in preparing animals to travel,” Delta spokesman Anthony Black said.

Of course a more sure-fire–albeit more expensive–solution for pet owners would be to fly your pet on PET Airways, which now services nine cities around the country.

Why ban the dog? I say fix what ever is going wrong in the area the dogs are kept. If it’s respiratory issues then what are all the other dogs experiencing in flight? I’ve often wondered what our dogs go through when they are flying in the belly of a plane.

It can’t be fixed. Delta finally did the right thing. They need to go the distance and join other airlines that already refuse to allow any dog or cat in the cargo hold. We should all demand that Delta stop taking all animals that cannot fit under the seat. Only Pet Airways should fly animals that cannot fit under the seat. Putting a dog or cat in the cargo bin is cruel and very dangerous. Just ask the baggage handlers and crew abou what happens down there. It’s not good.

I say no more flying dogs in cargo. Brianne’s got it right. Pet Airways. Otherwise, they fly WITH you. I definitely do not believe in buying dogs over the internet and shipping them anyway. I mean really…talk about stressful. Not to mention anything you can “order” like it’s just a product is from a disgusting puppy mill anyway. No responsible, reliable, caring breeder would ever do that.
Ok..off my soapbox.

I wonder what is the % of pet fatalities is compared to humans on flights? Airplanes don’t exactly have good air for anyone, canine or human. The breeding of dogs for appearance rather than health is to blame too. Treating dogs like cargo isn’t advisable.

Delta and other airlines should be more pet friendly, and adapt the aircrafts to accomodate dogs that may be a little larger to fit under the seats or for the amount of money they charge to bring a pet in the cabin, they should let the animal–in a carrier with the seat belt on have the seat next to you

Its tough, however, when you’re in the military and “have” to move your dog overseas. We’re experiencing that right now, as we have orders to move to Germany in a few months. Our pup (who we rescued as a 7lb puppy) is now 75lbs and can only be transported in cargo. While I agree that the conditions that the dogs are relegated to experience are awful, what other choice is there? Leaving him behind in the states isn’t an option. We contacted a pet transport company to see about their options and they only handle the before and after, not the actual plane ride conditions (for a fee of $4,000 — and thats with the military discount). I understand Delta and American’s choice, but there has to be a way to improve conditions for dogs in cargo.

I am agree with the decision taken by the Delta airways. They banned bulldogs because of the the deaths of these dogs in planes. These deaths occur due to the respiratory issues. The delta airways took the right decision. I am in favor of this decision because it is good for both animals and passengers traveling in plane.
