Howard has been an animal advocate for a long time. I am a long time listener and this is not the first time he has spoken about animals. This is how he really feels.

What kind of life is it for a pet that is in a home where the people do not want it?
The issue is that people selfish get pets without thinking of the well-being of the animal. If someone decides to get an animal, they take on the responsibility of caring for that living being for life. If they suddenly do not want it, that is too bad- they should have thought more about getting the animal in the first place.

Time for more high profile people like Howard to stand up for the animals. Many don’t want to know the truth but animal cruelty, neglect and abuse is alive and flourishing in shelters right across North America. Wake up folks. Talk to your politicians. Get laws changed. Make some noise. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Thank you Howard but even more thank you Beth. You are obviously as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside.
Places people move that they can’t take the dog.
Jail, senior housing, nursing homes, homeless shelters – the list goes on sadly enough in today’s economy.
New mothers are under severe pressure from grand parents and their own hormones to get rid of pets. The ‘mother’ instinct says ‘PREDATOR’ get it away from the baby – women are no more responsible for that then they are for post partum depression.
As for NSAL – the way they buy dogs from mills for resale means to me they are a pet store not a shelter.
I’ve been there and seen 6 week old pups they bought from a breeder to sell 🙁
Once again- then they shouldn’t have gotten the animal impulsively in the first place. People get animals for SELFISH reasons- just as people buy/breed/and sell animals for selfish reasons. Yes, there are some instances where well-intentioned people suddenly cannot take care of their animals, whether it is because of economic reasons or they actually cannot monetarily care for the animal anymore…But I have worked and volunteered in shelters for years and 90% of people who surrender their animals to shelters are doing so because they were too ignorant to realize animals are more than just commodities and actually take a lot of work to properly care for…so they lazily give them up so they don’t have to have the responsibility.
Today’s economy is forcing a lot of people out of homes and into rental apartments that do not allow pets. Time for that to change. If just a few people refused to rent there because they would not give up their pets perhaps a few landlords would change. But Howard had it right we all have to stand up for animals.
