Aurora, Colorado Considers Relaxing Pit Bull Ban

Service Pit Bull

It’s time for these towns across America that ban Pit Bulls to stop these ridiculous laws and join us in the 21st century.

What do you think?

— Kenn

Her name is Precious and she is disabled combat Marine Allen Grider’s therapy pet who helps him cope with his post-traumatic stress disorder. But in November 2009, Precious was seized from Grider’s Aurora, Colorado home.

Why? Because she is a Pit Bull Mix and since 2006, the city of Aurora has banned pit bulls and several other dog breeds.

But now, thanks to new federal rules that just took effect that allow any dog breed to be used as trained service dogs, Precious may not be banned anymore.

The updated regulations for the Americans With Disabilities Act, which says that all dogs that receive individual training can be service dogs, have Aurora, Colorado city officials re-examining the issue.

On Thursday, an Aurora City Council committee will discuss several variations to the current ban. They include doing away with the ban or keeping the ban but allowing pit bulls as service dogs.

There are opponents to these proposed changes, however.

“The pit bull ban is something my constituents support,” Aurora City Councilwoman Molly Markert said. “They are happy it’s in place.”

As for Precious however, she was eventually returned to Grider after he was forced to keep the dog at a friend’s home in another city for more than five months.

Grider, who is a Vietnam veteran, said he is now suing the city of Aurora for taking Precious away from him.

I hope Grider does sue and wins. A service dog is highly trained and expensive no matter the breed. To take away a service dog seems like breaking the stipulations of ADA to me.

Aurora, get RID of Molly Markert! I do not believe that the majority of her constituents support this cruel, ridiculous ban that murders so many dogs and tears families apart. BSL has been proven to NOT work. If Aurora citizens support this, my only comment is that the ones who do are beyond ignorant.

Just the fact that a pitbull mix has been trained and has served his owner as a service dog should say something for the breed. With the right training and in the hands of responsible owners, pit bulls, just like any other breed of dog, can make the most wonderful of pets.

As for a owner of 2 pits n a pit mix i think this law is insanse……i have never come across a more loving, attentive owner honoring breed…..My pit mix is the most attentive dog ever…..the lab in him lets me know when something is going to happen , be it a illness death etc……having a retriever, mutt, n daschund in the past a pit was new territory for me…..n i am happy to say a territory i will revisist again n again…i believe these dogs being so honoring to there owners…..are EXCELLANT service dogs…..and any person needing a service dog should be given the opportunity to have one…..Being also a daughter of a vietnam vet i in my opinion feel vets are given yet taken……so in the end you served me….n you should be given what is needed n dueto you….i tell this story again n again when people fear my dogs…(which btw r babies) the 8 lb dascund bit two of my dogs n myself…..so its not the breed just the dispostion……i praise your dog n cant believe the city aurora for doing this…..thank you….for your service….n i hope you n precious live a long life together…..

i belive it is not the breed that should be band but some of the owners if a dog no matter what breed is brought up in a loving home there is no problem i have always owned rotties and have always found them so loving and great with kids maybe it should be the owners that should be looked at not the breed im all for pitts and rotties in the hands of the right owner

Thankfully in the UK a new law is being proposed in the House of Lords to replace the disgusting Dangerous Dogs Act, ending BSL and extolling Deed not Breed. It is an abuse of civil rights.

My husband and I and our dog were moving from our California home and we considered several cities in Colorado…When we found out about bans on pitbulls, we quickly crossed Colorado off our list. We didn’t want to live in a city with such a narrow-minded mindset.  We now live in Nevada near the Sierras. Very beautiful, and our lovely dog is welcome.

Its not the Breed its the owner and how the owner raises the dog. If we as humanes were treated the same  way these horrible owners raise there dog we would be just as mean and insecure and ready to fight. STOP blamming the dog/breed for the ignorant owners actions blame the  owner  who thought it would be cool to win quick money instead of going out and working for a living  blame the jerks that thinks putting two dogs in a ring and have them fight till death is a sport. Arrest that  stupid jerk not the poor dog who was doing what the owner asked. I have  two wonderful pits and they are great with children and totlerate alot. I use to have a wonderful rottweiler biggest love  machine ever and wouldnt hurt a fly.  A 10lb mixed mutt can bite you  and make you  bleed just like a rott, pit or dobbie can the ONLY difference is those dogs are bigger and  there for have more force in thier bite. Put a 350 lb man against a 90lb man…The 350 lb man can do alot more damage then the 90 lb man but rest assured the 90 lb man  can  hurt you too. People.. cities need to get over them selves. Punish the one who deserves to be punished not  the entire breed. Baning a breed is the same as baning a humane race .. thought we as Americans were past that. To those that want to ban certain breeds how about we ban you  from your life style, take everything away from you, just cause  you  agree with the ban..Hmmmm not fair or right don’t like  it well then  don’t make bans that are unfair and unjust.
