A few months back you may remember that we raised money for Dog Files Team Member, Melody Chen, who had saved a pit bull named Chance.
Melody goes to college, lives the life of a young adult and STILL finds time to help save dogs. If anyone thinks that the new generation doesn’t care, they haven’t met Melody.
Below is an update about Chance with a very happy ending. The Dog Files Community helped save a dog in need and for that, we should all be proud!
Please share this story and let all your friends know that happy endings can, and do exist!

Chance’s Story
By Melody Chen
Chance, previously known as Chuco, did not come from an ideal home, in fact, his start at life was anything but perfect. Ever since he was young he was confined to the backyard and that’s where he stayed for 3 years of his life.
Chance was brought into animal control’s radar when he escaped his backyard and was found relaxing in a local elementary school with the kids. The animal control officers were familiar with him, however, the next time he would end up at the shelter it would be for a whole different reason.
A report came in of an injured dog that was not being cared for. When animal control officers arrived they found none other then Chance covered in wounds from head to toe. His owner had done NOTHING to help him. It was then Chance was confiscated by animal control and brought back and held as evidence as the case was proceeding. During this time, emails began pouring out for this once unknown dog in need. Luckily for him he had many people looking after him, many he will never meet but would help him along his journey.
When Chance was available to be rescued I went and got him out asap. He needed medical care and was still badly hurt. Chance was rushed to the vet to be treated for his wounds. He stayed there for a good two weeks before he was released.
I took Chance home for him to decompress from all the madness that has been surrounding him. It was going to be the first time he’ll have fall asleep on a comfy bed instead of the cold concrete floor, and boy did he love it!
Chance was a very mellow and quiet guy. He did not bark and was very well mannered. Though he was shy and lacked confidence, I could see in his eyes he really enjoyed the love and attention. Week after week he opened up more and more, his tail would begin to wag and body would wiggle with happiness when he sees you.
Chance had come a very long way, but I still couldn’t find him a forever home. I wanted to make sure Chance found the perfect home, one that would understand his needs, love him and would help him along the way. A home that would continue to rehabilitate him and give him the confidence he needs.
Chance stayed with me for 7 month before a second solution was thought up. I wanted to be fair to him and instead of having him on the sideline waiting, I wanted to get him better prepared and ready for a home.
That’s when Melanie Sanders of Paws To Luv stepped up and offered to take Chance in for training. With more training, his potential would open up and a possible home may come around sooner.
As we raised money for what was needed to get him to the trainer, something amazing happened! Pamela Ashley and Nathaniel Valley had been looking into adopting when they came across Chances chipin page. Turns out both Pamela and Nathaniel were local to us and were interested in Chance! What made this even better was they had experience with pit bulls.
We arranged a meet and greet and sure enough they fell in love. Adoption papers were filled out and their home passed my check. Chance had found his forever home!
I told Chance how lucky he was and though his past was horrible, his future was now, very bright. Chance didn’t know it, but he had an entire network of people who were rooting for him and helped him along his journey.
I’d like to thanks the Dog Files Community for all they did to help out with Chance! Though It has been a very long road, it was all worth it, because in the end, Chance finally has a home to call his own.

I have loved this dog the moment I saw his poor battered face. What wonderful people out there to give this guy a chance. You all get a special place in heaven!!
yay for happy endings and a loving home!
aww his face is too cute!!
sweet ending! i’m glad that he is safe and loved:)
What a great story, and even a better ending IF you could add that he was neutered prior to placement. The pic of him in the yard, rehabilitated and ready for a new home shows him still intact and therefore NOT ready. If we, as rescuers, do not take the responsibility of spay/neuter surgery, how can we blame the public for the overpopulation of unwanted pets being euthanised every day?
Thank you for your concern, however, if you were to look even more carefully at the photo you will be able to tell that what was shown is actually the skin sag after surgery. It sometimes up takes up to 6mo for the skin to completely ‘dry up’. Plus, he had very big ‘berries’. Please do not doubt my process in adoption, all my dogs are backed up by 501c3 rescues. I work with many rescues and have adopted out many and understand what is needed for a pup to be considered ‘adoptable’. All my dogs are fixed, up to date on shots, home checked, reference checked, and will return to me at any given point in time if the owner can no longer keep them. I just wanted to clear that up so people will not take this happy ending and make it into something otherwise. I understand your concern and was afraid people might think that so I wanted to respond to your concern. Thanks!

Thank you for printing this story. I think, after hearing all the horror stories, we who love dogs, need to hear the happy endings. Thank you to all the people who love and have halped Chance along the way…I do agree with the previous comment that spay/neuter should be part of the rescue process….hopefully it will be. But that does not negate the wonderful people who helped this wonderful dog.
No worries Anne, he was fixed prior to me bringing him home for rehab. He just has big ‘berries’ and had some skin sag after surgery. It’s all gone now. (=
So glad he is safe and happy now :).. this stories inspires us not to buy dogs but adopt and help these sweet ones.

What a heart warming story. So glad for people and rescue’s like you. And Chance sure looks happy. Thats all that matters. I was wondering if dogs who go through trama like that remember it like we do?
God bless you and keep up the good work
this story made me crye bud is a wonderful ending wish be all like this and chance you are a strong sweet boy:)
This is quite nice story. Thanks for publishing this story here.
I just recentley did a rescue. The original owners were so ungrateful. I tried to explain why their dog needed to be neutered. She told me that they wanted to breed him. He was no purebreed. I told her of a place where she could get him fixed. It was a non-profit org. I dont do this because of people it is because it is the right thing to do.
Great recovery. Good people. Hey did you notice, the dog looks similar to the guy who adopted it. Cool. He is in safe hands.
So happy for Chance finding his Forever Loving Home!!! Congratulations Chance!!!
makes me cry to see how all the wounds on that dogs face .
It broke my heart to see Chance’s face like that, and to think his previous owner had no concern for him makes me pissed. Would love the opportunity to slap some people, unfortunately that wouldn’t fix the problem of abuse or Chance’s medical condition….thank God for people like you Melody, the others that helped him and the family who loved him deeply enough to give him a forever home.
i am soooo happy for Chance! God bless you people! 🙂
