Police Dog To Return Home After Life Saving Treatment In California

On Tuesday afternoon, Waco, Texas Police Officer Chip Weiser was busy making travel plans to California after his K9 companion Torro was declared healthy enough to come home after six weeks of intensive treatment for leptospirosis, a life-threatening condition.

Leptospirosis is an infection caused by bacteria and is rarely seen in dogs, but is extremely serious and without immediate and effective treatment, it is usually fatal.

Torro, a five and half year old a Belgian Malinois, didn’t show any signs of illness until he got sick in the back of Weiser’s car last month.
.
Veterinarians in Dallas determined the dog was suffering from the deadly and fast-acting disease, the best treatment for which is an aggressive application of kidney dialysis.

The treatment is offered for dogs at only a handful of animal hospitals including one at the University of California-Davis, which is where Torro ended up after an unnamed Dallas-area woman heard about the dog’s plight and donated frequent flyer miles to fly Torro and his vet, Dr. Becky Porterpan, to the West Coast.

Veterinarians at UC-Davis said Torro suffered what they called a “toxic event,” the source of which is unknown.

After three-and-a-half weeks in critical condition, Torro, who entered police service four years ago, began to improve and hasn’t required dialysis in the past week.

And while Torro’s test results aren’t quite in the normal range just yet, they are good enough that he can be returned to Waco, where he’ll continue to recover under veterinary supervision.

What a great story! Thank God for SMART vets and fast-acting owners! Also great kudos to that unnamed Dallas-area woman who heard about the dog’s plight and donated frequent flyer miles to fly Torro and his vet, Dr. Becky Porterpan, to the West Coast. That’s one special lady!! I want to thank her and prayer that she & her family are blessed always. GOOD JOB EVERYBODY!
