Dog Saves His Owner After Freak Bike Accident

By Penny Eims

Austin, TX - A dog quite literally saved his owner’s life just a few short weeks ago.

The dog, a 4 yr-old Golden Retriever named Yogi, was by his owner’s side when a freak accident happened on October 30.

On that fateful morning, the man, Paul Horton, and his dog were on a route they had traveled together often.

Horton was on his bike, Yogi by his side.

But on this day, things did not go as they always had.

Horton failed to negotiate a small jump and he suffered a tragic accident in the process.

Life changed for Paul Horton when his failed negotiation threw him over his bike’s handle-bars and onto the concrete below.

Horton suffered a severe blow to his head, so severe that he was paralyzed from his chest down.

Yogi did not run from the chaotic scene – he did not venture away to chase a bird or a squirrel.

He stayed by the side of his motionless guardian.

By his side until he heard someone on the trail.

As luck would have it, the people on the trail knew Yogi, they were his neighbors.

According to the Tates, the normally quiet, friendly dog was barking frantically.

The couple followed him down the trail until Yogi led them to his injured owner.

The Tates were able to dial 911 and get help to the injured man.

Paul Horton is in the process of learning to live with his serious injury.

He has been recuperating at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital.

It’s difficult to say what may have happened to Paul Horton on that fateful morning had Yogi not stayed by his side.

Thankfully, no one wil have to ponder that question – Yogi saved his guardian’s life that day.

Once again, a dog that does what is right for the sheer purpose of doing what is right – no agenda, no pay-off, just a beautiful, internal moral compass that makes these wonderful 4-legged creatures such amazing friends and companions.
