MEDFORD, NJ — Betsy’s lawsuit has been settled, but a legislative campaign continues for “Betsy’s Law” — a bill introduced after a Rottweiler died during an overnight stay at an animal hospital.
Madeleine Kayser of Toms River, whose 16-month-old dog, Betsy, accidentally suffocated in 2007 at a Burlington County veterinary hospital, said today she is continuing the push for a law to mandate that veterinarians notify pet owners, in writing, if they do not provide 24-hour supervision for animals they keep overnight.
Kayser filed a lawsuit against South Jersey Animal Hospital in Medford claiming Betsy died when it was left unattended overnight.
A settlement was reached on the same day last week the lawsuit was to go to trial in Burlington County.
“All I can say is it was settled for an undisclosed amount. We are extremely satisfied with the settlement. I also have a state veterinary board complaint pending,” Kayser said.
