Allegan County, MI — Chance fought for his life, not giving up after he was hanged from a tree and beaten two years ago. The black Labrador dog didn’t give up after being given antifreeze that damaged his kidneys.

“He was a fighter, he was a fighter to the end,” said Brian Vandenakker, whose family adopted the abused animal that became the center of an emotional court case in Allegan County last year.

Chance died Sunday of kidney disease at the Grand Rapids-area home of his adoptive family. The dog was 5 years old and had received treatment at local veterinary offices and at Michigan State University.

“Chancy just filled a room. He was a superstar,” Vandenakker said.

The animal abuse case drew strong comments from all involved, including the judge who sentenced Jason Allen Williams of Grandville on Sept. 4, 2009, to 45 days in jail and to pay more than $2,300 in restitution.
