The Polk County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a man they believe shot and tried to drown an English bulldog over the weekend.
The sheriff’s office says 49-year-old Bernard Lear of Altoona was identified through tips to Polk County Crimestoppers and arrested after interviews Wednesday night.
Authorities had been looking for the man responsible for injuries to an English bulldog that was found on Saturday in the woods near where I-80 crosses Northwest 26th Street. Witnesses say they saw a man trying to drown the dog and then left it to die. The Animal Rescue League later had to euthanize the dog.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Department had released a description of the man and the vehicle he was driving. They say tips helped them locate the vehicle, which led them to Lear.
Lear is in the Polk County Jail on a $6,300 bond. He’s charged with animal torture, non-payment of child support and felon in possession of a firearm.
