LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Metro Animal Services is taking some heat after mistakenly euthanizing a family pet Monday, more than a week after the dog disappeared from his home, Louisville TV station WLKY reported.

Owner David Myers said he and his roommate’s dogs escaped from their yard when a power company crew uncovered a hole while doing some work.

Myers said he searched for 2-year-old Suno, a purebred male Alaskan husky, on the streets, online and by phone.
He said he called the shelter almost every day, asking if there was a male Alaskan husky at the shelter. But officials told him they only had a female husky.

Myers went to the shelter for the first time Tuesday morning, after learning the night before that his friend’s dog was at the shelter. He learned of Suno’s fate while filling out a lost animal report.

“She basically told me with a cold heart, ‘We put him down yesterday. (We) could have put him down four days and 14 hours ago,'” Myers said.

Shelter officials admit they mistakenly listed the dog as a female. The vet who found Suno told the shelter it was a female and officials never double-checked, MAS spokeswoman Jackie Gulbe said. She said the issue will be addressed, along with the shelter’s policy not to release information over the phone.

Gulbe said Myers should have been there as soon as he realized Suno was missing, and that he could have been returned to his owner if the dog had been wearing tags.

“We highly recommend that people come in and walk through the kennels and visually check the animals,” she said.

Gulbe said shelter officials determined Suno could not be adopted either because the dog was “very fearful.”
Myers said he is afraid to own another dog — something he said shelter officials have offered to give him.
“I’m not sure I’ll get another dog,” he said.

Myers said his dog had a chip, but the shelter said the dog was scanned several times and no chip was detected.

My cat was picked up in Vance County, NC and was killed that evening in a gas chamber. I went to the pound the next morning, took them pictures of him, filled out a lost cat tag, and before I got home they called my cell and told me they figured he was just another cat and put him to sleep the day before. Then as cold as ice they said, you can come get one of the kittens we have here still.
Come to find out, it happens often here.
