BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – A 12-year-old Blue Springs boy and his dog are being called heroes after stopping a burglary in progress. Two male teens were taken into custody after the SWAT team surrounded the home in the 2900 block of Northwest Windsor Place just after 9 a.m.

The 12-year-old neighbor, who was home sick from school and whose father asked that he not be identified, called 911 after he told police he saw the two teens breaking into the home. His dog had been barking and that is when the boy saw the break-in. When officers arrived they heard noises coming from inside the home. When they opened the front door they saw weapons laying on the floor.

The homeowner, Bart Lawson, came to the residence while police surrounded the home.

“We opened the door and I saw some guns lying on the floor and when I said, ‘Well they’ve got into my guns,’ well that was it,” said Lawson. “They yanked me back out and said can’t go in now.”

The two teens came out of the home two and a half hours later after falling through the ceiling from their hiding place in the attic.

The 12-year-old who called his neighbor before he called 911 says that his dog, a black lab named Snowball, was the real hero.

“I hear her barking really crazy like so I went in and looked to see if she was alright and I see two people in my neighbor’s back yard,” said the boy. “So I went and called my neighbor and left him a message.”

Lawson says that he was stunned to see that the two would-be burglars were teenage boys who were after his gun collection, but he’s full of praise for his young neighbor.

“I thought he might need a ride to school,” said Lawson. “I’ve given him a ride to school a couple of times and then I got a got a text, that said 911, someone’s breaking into your house.”

“He’s been the perfect little neighbor, he comes over and helps me mow the yard all the time,” said Lawson.

The two teen suspects now face felony charges in the attempted theft.
