DANVILLE, VIRGINIA – The story of a stray dog with a plastic container stuck on its head had a happy ending Friday after he was captured and the container was safely removed.
The stray was seen several times this week in the North Main Street and Colquhoun Street areas. Danville Police Officer Mike Smith captured the dog Friday after a woman spotted him resting on a porch on Colquhoun Street.

Paulette Dean, executive director of the Danville Area Humane Society, offered a $500 reward Tuesday to anyone who could capture the dog — a medium-sized, black-and-white mix that is approximately 4 years old. Dean said the Humane Society would split the reward between the woman and the Danville Police Department’s Crimestoppers program.

“We’re pretty proud of him,” Dean said of Smith. “We think he did a very good thing by capturing the dog.”
Smith could not be reached for comment.

Animal Control first took the dog to the Animal Medical Center of Danville. Dean said the dog was thin, but “other than being hungry, thirsty and weak, he was fine.” She described the dog as a pit bull-chow mix, but “heavy on the mix.”

Dean said the dog had been spotted all over Colquhoun Street and Jefferson Avenue this week, and hoped it was the same dog that was also seen on North Main Street.

After the five-day holding period is over, the dog will be available for adoption, although Dean recommended an experienced dog owner take him in.

“At first we were concerned because he was very shy and scared,” she said. “But I think that he is going to be a considered a special needs dog, at least for a while.”

The container was a clear plastic canister, similar to the type that would hold snack food, Dean said. In the 17 years she has worked with the Humane Society, Dean said the group has seen a number of stray cats, a fox, a raccoon, and now a dog get their head stuck in containers. A container of this type can easily prevent an animal from being able to eat or drink.

“There are dangers of littering,” she said. “People need to keep their trash contained. This also says a lot about not letting dogs wander.”

As of Friday afternoon, an owner had not come forward to claim the dog.

“We’re just so grateful that the police officer was able to capture the dog,” she said.
