Robert A. Kollar was leading a platoon somewhere in Vietnam about 41 years ago when the alert German shepherd at his side suddenly stopped.

“He just sat down and didn’t want to go down a trail,” Mr. Kollar recalls. “I told my lieutenant I’m not going down there. If the dog doesn’t want to go, I’m not going.”

He doesn’t know what Rebel sensed. Booby traps, maybe? Whatever it was, he trusted his dog.

Mr. Kollar, of Cumberland, R.I., was one of the handlers who worked with the dogs that alerted humans to many dangers during the long, bloody conflict decades ago. He loved his Rebel, also known as M421.

He walked everywhere with the dog. He talked to him and read letters to him.

“That dog was your confidant,” the Army veteran says. “He was your best friend.”

Meet The Army Dogs Of Fort Meade

Here’s four of the dogs I’ve been filming at Fort Meade.

Bubba (below) is a Labrador Retriever. He is a certified off leash bomb detection dog which means he about one hundred feet away from his handler while looking for explosives. This keeps his handler at a safer distance. He spent a year in Iraq and came back this past April. Labs can’t be attack dogs because they are too friendly.

Oscar (below) is a German Shepherd. He is dual-certified in bomb detection and attack. When searching for explosives he is on leash.

Beno (below) is a Belgian Malinois which is a Belgian Shepherd. Malinois’ are smaller, quicker and crazier than their German Shepherd brothers. If you which a German Shepherd attack he brakes a bit as he goes for the bite. Malinois speed up when they go for the bite, almost smacking right into you. He is dual-certified in bomb detection and attack. When searching for explosives he is on leash. Beno is probably the best attack dog at Fort Meade.

Helo (below) is also a Belgian Malinois and quite a beautiful 6 year old specimen. He’s dual-certified in bomb detection and attack. Searches for explosives on leash. His handler’s last day was today. Before the winter’s out he’ll probably be up and running with a new best friend.

Minneapolis Police Dog Dies In Leap From Roof Of Downtown Business

By David Chanen For The Star Tribune

Minneapolis police mourn the loss of Chase, who leaped from the roof of a downtown building he and his partner, Eric Lukes, were searching.

Minneapolis police officer Eric Lukes and his canine partner, Chase, quickly made their way through the main floor of the old downtown Jaguar car dealership Monday morning, searching for three people suspected of stealing copper pipe.

They made their way up to the third-story roof, and still no thieves.

Then Chase, off his leash and near the end of sniffing the 50-yard expanse, seemed to sense something. The 100-pound German shepherd took off running and leaped over a 3-foot concrete barrier encircling the rooftop. He plummeted to the ground below and died later at an animal hospital.

Sgt. Dan May of the canine unit said he could only speculate why Chase, who had just turned three in August, went over the roof’s edge when the suspects weren’t in sight.

“He could have heard a noise on the street. I just don’t know,” said May, a member of the unit for 13 years. “He couldn’t see what was on the other side.”

It could have been that Chase did catch a scent, because shortly afterward, another police dog helped nab two of the suspects hiding in ductwork in a stairwell nearby.

Although a half-dozen officers were involved in the search, May said there was no way the suspects would have been apprehended without the dogs.

“The service that the canines provide is invaluable to safeguarding the lives of our officers, and the loss of a canine partner is very hard on the family of the officer, who raise these animals as their own,” Police Chief Tim Dolan said.

It’s the third time since the canine unit started in 1971 that a dog has died in the line of duty. Two other dogs died jumping off roofs, one in the late 1970s and another in 1997, May said.

“I’ve had to put a canine partner down because of illness, and that was very difficult,” May said. “But to see your dog die this way, I can’t imagine.”

May said that Lukes was very distraught, and that he hadn’t a chance to debrief him. Lukes will be on a standard three-day paid leave from the department.

Dog And 11 Pups Found In Perris, CA. Make It Big On Web

Live TV : Ustream

An emaciated, tick-ridden German Shepherd found starving in a Perris backyard has become an international Internet sensation, as she and her 11 puppies are nursed back to health on a live Webcam.

Southern California German Shepherd Rescue volunteers said it was a miracle that the mother dog, which they have named ”Juno,” was able to give birth to 11 healthy pups the day before animal control authorities, acting on a worried neighbor’s phone tip, broke into a backyard to retrieve the dog and her litter.

”She was emaciated and full of ticks,” said Barbara Cavanaugh, in a newspaper article. ”It was an amazing thing that she gave birth to all of them.”

The family unit is living at a volunteer’s house in San Diego County, and their e-exploits are streaming 24-hours a day at their web site.

More than 130,000 viewers have checked the stream, which today showed a pile of sleeping furballs on a bed, as well as five or so black-and-white pups fighting over a stuffed toy.

The pups will be available for adoption during the rescue group’s annual fundraiser, Barktoberfest, to be held Oct. 18 at Markim Pet Resort in Carmel Valley, near San Diego. Tickets for the charitable event include admission to a beer garden, food and entertainment, and can be purchased at www.barktoberfestsd.com.
