By Randi Rossmann for The Press Democrat

Taz, a Santa Rosa police dog, heard the repeated booms and crackles of fireworks Sunday night and probably thought it was gunfire.

That’s when he bolted from his yard and leaped two fences to get to work.

But his partner, Santa Rosa police officer Mike Clark, was with his family at a Fourth of July barbecue and wasn’t there to guide him, a chagrined Clark said Monday.

The four-year-old, 70-pound Belgian Malinois wandered Windsor all night. He ran his paws and nails down and developed a limp before he was found Monday morning and reunited with a grateful and relieved Clark.

The officer also was exhausted as he too wandered Windsor all night, along with several other law enforcement officers and friends, in a painful and unsuccessful search for the valuable dog.

By Jessica Langdon For Times Record News

UPDATE: WICHITA FALLS — Wichita Falls Police reported at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday that seven stolen show dogs have been found alive, apparently in a vehicle. A brief notice from police said the dogs have been given water and the owners are on their way to get them.

Richard and Sue Hooper stopped in Wichita Falls on their way to a national specialty dog show in Arizona, and as they got ready to leave, someone drove off with their vehicle and all seven dogs.

Richard Hooper looked down Tuesday afternoon from the second floor of La Quinta Inn at 1128 Central Freeway and pointed to the spot where the white Toyota van had been parked that morning.

The Humble couple was driving to Flagstaff, Ariz., for a Swedish Vallhund National Specialty event, which is to take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

They were taking three Swedish Vallhunds that belong to a friend who lives in Georgia; she planned to fly out later to attend the show. The couple and their friend are co-owners of another Swedish Vallhund that was in the vehicle, and they were also taking another that belongs to a friend in Round Rock. In addition to those five dogs, the Hoopers had their daughter’s two beagles.

From USAToday.com

A Connecticut couple has been reunited with their dog, days after he bolted from their campsite Saturday in Delaware.

Chris and Kathie Gagne of Manchester, Conn., drove to Dover International Speedway last weekend with their two dogs to watch the NASCAR races, but they say a German shepherd spooked their Boston terrier, Brady, and he took off.

The couple vowed not to leave Dover until they found Brady. Over the next few days they received reports of sightings, but on Wednesday morning, three men spotted Brady and caught him.

The Gagnes say they were overwhelmed by the support they received from the community while their dog was missing, including offers of food or a place to stay.

They say they may come back to Dover, but next time they won’t bring their dogs. Brady, named for quarterback Tom Brady, had attended the race before. According to a story from the race website, the posting of an amber alert helped rally the community in the search.

help find joey

By Joe Giessler For The Eagle-Gazette

A message from Joey’s owner…

Prior to Feb 18th, life was good, I had it all. I’d just gotten my new puppy Nemo in January, everything was great, Nemo and Joey became instant playmates, I had two beautiful Eskies and a Samoyed.

And then, on Feb 18th we had a painter here. I left my house at 1:30 pm for work. I told the painter not to open the gate because of the dogs. Well, he opened the gate!! First my Samoyed went out, Joey followed her.

A neighbor saw it happen, and went after Joey in an effort to grab him and bring him back but unfortunately this just made him run. He was last seen running into a residential neighborhood.

To this day, he is still gone! Vanished. We have done everything, we placed a huge ad in the Sunday paper, Craiglist, Petfinder, Facebook, Twitter, a Blog (complete with maps of the areas where he was last seen) we made about 400 posters, we’ve checked every shelter ( including the dead animal list) I’ve contacted ERU and Heartbandits.

The coordinator from our dog park sent out over 1500 emails. I also signed up with PetAmberAlert. com which I would not recommend based on my experience…they charged me about $70, created a flier and told me to make copies (which clearly we had already done ourselves). Even worse, THEIR flier contained incorrect information (they said FEMALE instead of MALE) and then they couldn’t be reached despite several attempts to contact them to correct it!

We were getting a lot of calls from people who’ve seen him or thought the dog they saw was him, but he never let anyone near enough to him to catch him – - and that does sound like Joey. One of the dogs we received so many calls on is an Eskie named Casper who leaves his yard and cruises the park across the street from his home.

So, I believe some one has him. I am so heartbroken and completely devastated, I cannot accept that he is gone forever. I cry every single day. He was the best, most well behaved dog I’ve ever known I have to keep the faith that somehow, someway, someday Joey will be home.

Tuscon, Arizona — Two English bulldogs were stolen from their South Side home March 15 by a pair of thieves, according to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Stolen English bulldogs

In addition to being heartless and cruel, this particular pair of thieves proved some dog snatchers are none too bright. Both suspects were caught on film by a speed camera as they tried to escape by speeding down South Nogales Highway.

The genius thieves were arrested April 2 and one of the dog’s recovered, according to a report in the Arizona Daily Star. The two were identified as Joe Marty and Mario Bustamante, both 18. They surrendered after pressure from family members to do so, Dep. Dawn Barkman is quoted as saying, and they face charges that include second-degree burglary, theft and trafficking stolen property.

The dogs lived at a home in the 4100 block of East Coolbrooke Drive, southwest of Valencia Road and East Benson Highway. No word if anything else besides the pooches were taken during the robbery.

“Tater Tot” Found As Dozens Join Search

By Jim Fennell For UnionLeader.com

Manchester, New Hamshire – A potentially heartbreaking story ended happily for a Vermont couple yesterday afternoon when they were reunited with one of their dogs.

Tater Tot, a 6-year-old yellow lab, was found alongside the northbound side of Interstate 93, not far from where she had bolted after the car she was riding in rolled over Thursday evening.

Judy and Bob Sylvia, a Manchester couple who decided to help look for the dog after reading the story of Tater Tot’s disappearance, spotted the dog curled up near a fence by Exit 9, about a mile north of where the accident occurred.

“I don’t think you could ask for much more,” Tater Tot’s owner, Trish Dale of Warren, Vt., said of the reunion.

On Thursday, Dale suffered a concussion and a broken nose when she fell asleep and lost control of the Audi she was driving home from a medical appointment in Massachusetts, she said. Two of her four dogs, Tater Tot and Buddy, were in the back seat, and both ran from the car after the accident.

Buddy was found quickly, but Tater Tot darted across the highway and out of sight.

Dale’s husband, John Dale, put out word through the local media that he was going to search for the dog yesterday and would welcome any help. He said about 100 people, including Cassandra Gatsas, wife of the city’s mayor, showed up about noon to help look for the dog.

John Dale said Gatsas, who is on the board of directors of the Manchester Animal Shelter, had sent out e-mails to people and had posted messages of Facebook.

“I thought how wonderful this is,” John Dale said. “Where in the world could something like this happen?”

The Sylvias, who own three yellow labs, said they decided to drive around the area to look for the dog after reading the story in yesterday’s New Hampshire Union Leader. Bob Sylvia works for Precision Towing and Recovery and said he had been to enough accident scenes involving animals to feel confident that the dog would still be close to where the accident happened.

The Sylvias met up with John Dale near Stevens Park and told him they were sure Tater Tot hadn’t roamed that far. That’s when they set off for the highway, entering the northbound side at Exit 8 and slowly driving along the road until they saw the dog. Bob Sylvia said Tater Tot took off into the woods when they pulled over, but he was able to track her path.

Sylvia said he called John Dale’s cell phone to tell him the news. John Dale arrived with Buddy, who accompanied Bob Sylvia into the woods to look for Tater Tot. The dogs, born about a year apart, are from the same parents and both compete in AKC obedience shows.

Sylvia said Tater Tot responded immediately to Buddy’s cries and barks, bounding over a hill for a happy reunion.

“The two of them were so excited to see each other,” John Dale said.

Tater Tot was taken to the Veterinary Emergency Center of Manchester on Karl Drive. Trish Dale said the dog had a puncture wound on her left hind leg and was limping on one of her front legs.

By Priyanka Dayal For Telegram.com.

Robert A. Kollar was leading a platoon somewhere in Vietnam about 41 years ago when the alert German shepherd at his side suddenly stopped.

“He just sat down and didn’t want to go down a trail,” Mr. Kollar recalls. “I told my lieutenant I’m not going down there. If the dog doesn’t want to go, I’m not going.”

He doesn’t know what Rebel sensed. Booby traps, maybe? Whatever it was, he trusted his dog.

Mr. Kollar, of Cumberland, R.I., was one of the handlers who worked with the dogs that alerted humans to many dangers during the long, bloody conflict decades ago. He loved his Rebel, also known as M421.

He walked everywhere with the dog. He talked to him and read letters to him.

“That dog was your confidant,” the Army veteran says. “He was your best friend.”

From Digital Spy.

Jesse James has revealed that his recently-returned dog was “beaten” while it was missing for three weeks.

James and wife Sandra Bullock were overjoyed when their pitbull terrier Cinnabun was found safe on Wednesday, which put an end to their frantic search following its disappearance last month.

The couple had previously made a public appeal for their pet, and even called in a pet detective to track the nine-month-old dog down.

However, James has now said that the dog sustained severe injuries and also lost 23 pounds during the 25 days she was missing.

James told Ryan Seacrest on KIIS-FM: “Someone beat the hell out of her. [But] I don’t care about all that, I’m just glad to have her back.”
