A group of college kids spend their Summer vacation rebuilding and rehabilitating an Animal Shelter in Morehead, Kentucky to help give the dogs a better quality of life and help them find loving homes.

I would like to thank Denise Bash of Animal Lifeline And Rescue University and Liz Neuschatz of Petfinder.com Foundation for allowing me to document all the great work they are doing to help animals in need.

Pit Proud: The History Of The Pit Bull

I’ve been working on Pit Proud: The History Of The Pit Bull for well over a year. But I believe that every second that went into it was worth it, because I knew then and I know now that Pit Proud is the single, most important Dog Files Episode yet.

It’s the story of what I believe to be, the most maligned and abused animal on Planet Earth.

The Pit Bull.

A dog that the media has made out to be the “great white shark” of the land. A monster waiting to jump out of the shadows and attack your children.

But you know what I’ve found out over the course of researching, writing and crafting this episode?

Pit Bulls… are just dogs. No more, no less.

And like all dogs, they are individuals with varied personalities and temperaments. But because of their intense loyalty and strong form, the pit bull has been singled out amongst lesser men to abuse and kill for their small-minded, cruel entertainment.

You see, the pit bull problem isn’t the dogs, by any means.

The pit bull problem is people.

The people that want to fight them. The people who want one so they feel tougher when they walk down the street. The people that keep them tied up in chains. The people who go about their days and weeks and months and years while ignoring the extremely social animal that’s locked up in their basement.

These are the irresponsible owners that should never own ANY dog. And these are the people that we should always have on our radar.

And the abused dogs?

Well, if the Vick case taught us anything, it’s that even fight dogs, when given a chance, would rather curl up on the couch next to it’s loving human.

And that says it all to me. Pit Bulls are dogs. Dogs are as individual as any human. And like humans, they shouldn’t be painted with a wide brush.

Unless that wide brush has peanut butter on it. I hear pittie’s LOVE peanut butter.

Hero Dogs Of 9/11

I remember back in 2001 on a hot, but incredibly beautiful day in September. I left my apartment on Houston Street in Manhattan to begin my daily walk uptown to work.

When I hit the street, I immediately felt a buzz in the air.

Men in suits were talking to Soho Hipsters. Groups of people listened to car radios. Needless to say, something was off.

As I was walked past the Angelica Movie Theater, I looked up in the direction everyone else was looking.

The World Trade Center was in flames! And then, as quick as I looked up, the South Tower was gone, replaced by a million pieces of shattered glass sparkling in the clear blue sky.

At that moment, I knew my life, and the lives of every American had changed forever.

Every year, when 9/11 rolled around, I promised myself that I’d do something special to commemorate this tragic American moment. And then it was September 12th and life went back to everyday concerns.

This year was different.

I hope when you watch “Hero Dogs Of 9/11″ it affects you as much as it affected me while I was creating it.

That you take a few minutes to pray for the 2976 victims of this tragic day.

That you remember how proud we all felt in the weeks after 9/11 as we watched over 10,000 men and women converge on Ground Zero in the largest mobilization of emergency workers in the history of the United States.

And how 300 of them proved, without a doubt, that they were indeed man’s best friend.

Adoptathon With Cesar Millan

We interrupt your regularly scheduled viewing to bring you our very first Dog Files Dispatch. Our way of getting you timely info about news and currents events.

This past weekend the Dog Files attended the Pet Adoptathon at the North Shore Animal League in Long Island. This is a huge adoption drive in its fifteenth year and over 2000 shelters across the world participated in this 36 hour marathon event.

And as an added bonus, this year’s spokesperson wasÂ Cesar Milan, of Dog Whisperer fame, and we’ve got an exclusive interview with him. I have to say that Cesar is a great “human” and continues to give back with the Millan Foundation, a non-profit set up to give funding and support to shelters across the country.

The DogFiles would like to thank Devera and Dianne and everybody at the North Shore Animal League for inviting us to their incredible event!

Second Chance

The Dog Files is proud to premiere the first episode of the “The Dog Files Hit The Heartland” series. It’s called “Second Chance” and it’s about a Rescue Shelter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota called, you got it, Second Chance Rescue Center.

We would like to thank Rosey Quinn for letting us spending the day chronicling all the great work they do for all animals, big and small!

The Dog Files is proud to announce a four-part series starting in March 2009 entitled “The Dog Files Hit The Heartland.”

Back in October 2008, The Dog Files had the pleasure to travel to Minnesota and South Dakota and get a first hand look at the Dog Shelter/Adoption situation in America’s great Midwest. We came away with the knowledge that so many caring, loving individuals are giving their all to help man’s best friend in the heartland and we can’t wait for you to see our four, very special episodes.

Pup-arazzi Photo Tips

1. Patience: Dogs have a short attention span. Use squeaky toys and treats to keep their attention. It’s also very useful to have a friend help.

2. Enviroment: Be aware of busy backgrounds. Hang an old sheet or blanket for a classic portrait look.

3. Eye Level: Get down on your hands & knees to take pictures from your dog’s eye level. Change your perspective and enter your dog’s world.

4. Close-Ups: Get in closer or zoom in. Try different framing (place head at top or lower left, etc.) Try using the Macro Mode on your camera for extreme close-ups.

5. Candid: Shoot pictures of your dog in their element, being themselves.

6. Turn Off Flash: A flash takes away passion and emotion. It’s artificial and makes artificial photos. If you need more light, go near a window or door and use the sun (the best light source there is.)

7. Shoot, Shoot, Shoot: Take as many photos as you can and throw away the bad ones. Pro’s take hundreds of photos and then edit them done to the ten or twenty best ones.

The Dog Files crew had a great time documenting Just4Pooches’ annual Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest. It was great seeing how much fun their customers had dressing up their dogs and coming into the store to show them off. I could tell these people had a deep, deep love of their pets and they were all so proud of them.

The Dog Files would like to thank Darren Tietsworth and the whole staff at Just4Pooches for inviting us to celebrate Halloween with them. Also, a big thanks to all the great dog lovers who spent weeks putting together such great costumes for their hounds.
