Susan Orlean Says, Give Rin Tin Tin’s Oscar Back.

Susan Orlean, writer of Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend, believes that Rin Tin Tin was screwed out of his best actor oscar.

While researching her incredible book about Rin Tin Tin, (the Dog Files highly recommends it), Susan learned that Rinty received the most votes at the very first Oscar ceremony, but the Academy, thought that no one would take them seriously, so they awarded it to a man, Emil Jannings.

The Story Of Robbie The Pit Bull

On Saturday, December 17, 2011, I went to meet Ylva and her dog, Robbie. We were filming them for a video for Eleventh Hour Rescue in Morris County, New Jersey.

Robbie is a pit bull that had been starved and beaten for years. Eleventh Hour rescued him and they placed him in a great foster home and nursed him back to life.

As I interviewed his new owner, Ylva, I thought that Robbie was just a dog that had needed a home. Then Ylva showed me the photo of Robbie when Eleventh Hour first got him. The change is amazing.

Robbie is an incredible, cute and loving pit bull that hit the jackpot. But many pitties never even get a chance to pull the lever. They are judged guilty of being a Pit Bull and then put to death.

I thought I’d share some video grabs of Robbie and Ylva from the day’s event. At the end, you’ll see how Robbie first looked when Eleventh Hour Rescue received him.

What Steve Jobs’ Words Mean To The Dog World: Dog Files Opinion

In case you don’t know, Steve Jobs is one of my heroes. Yes, he could be headstrong, and yes, he could be a jerk. But the man saw through the corporate red tape that holds so much of us back. He cut through it with determination and strength. He believed in what he was doing and let no one get in his way.

Steve Jobs knew there was a better way to run a business. A business that didn’t exist on the fears of consumers. Apple never ran on focus groups, but thrived through common sense and rational thought. It’s a business where passion came first, then profits.

Over the last couple of years, I have run into a great deal of red tape as I try to simply “help dogs”. And the problems are always from humans, never the dogs. To get myself through these trying issues, I always remind myself, “It’s always about the dogs.” And then, I stand back up and figure out my next line of attack to continue building on the Dog Files’ mission of showing the world that dogs deserve our love, care and respect.

Of course, I have also met some of the most amazing, loyal and kind people working in the “dog world.” Just look at my Dog Files episodes. Everyone one of the people highlighted in them has given their time, love and life over to helping dogs. They understand how hard it can be working past other people’s egos and stubbornness. They realize that red tape doesn’t really exist if you don’t agree to believe in it. They don’t let the internet naysayers get to them. And when those forces threaten to beat them into submission, they always get back up with greater purpose and double their efforts.

How do they find the strength? Something tells me, they also say to themselves, “It’s always about the dogs.”

Yes, it really can be that simple.

In this video, Steve Jobs will tell you the most important thing you’ll learn all year. And it directly applies to all of us trying to make the world a better, safer place for dogs. We can make a difference and we can change the world.

We just have to keep repeating to ourselves, “It’s always about the dogs.”

The Story Of Buttercup: Dog Files Success Story

When we first got Buttercup.

On June 13th, a special 2 month old mangey puppy came into my life. Covered in scabs, bloody with open wounds, swollen from secondary skin infections, eye infections, and urinary tract infections. This little girl was a complete mess. The question was, how did a young puppy end up in a such a pitiful state? Well, this puppy was a pure example and image of what we call neglect.

Introducing Buttercup…regardless of the obvious discomfort, this little girl would wag her tail every time my eyes met hers. For a young puppy who merely entered the world 2 month ago, her happy-go-lucky personality easily disguised the horrors of her past.

Buttercup was taken from a guy who acquired her from his neighbors, they were planning on killing her with a rock, due to her “conditions”! You would think this guy’s intentions were to save her life, however, that was far from the case. The truth was, he wanted to breed her instead! After escaping a near death experience, Buttercup was found in the backyard deteriorating slowly waiting for help to arrive.

I could never grasp the thought of being so defenseless with no one to care for you…Just the thought of her sitting alone broke my heart, it was a reality I didn’t want to believe in. Sadly, I knew this kind of neglect happens all too often. Regardless, I wanted things to be different for her. On the day I picked her up, I promised her a second chance.

Buttercup Before And After

In a short three month period time, Buttercup had fought off all her medical issues and even learned how to jump onto the bed. Even better, she also mastered the art of manipulation, charming her way out of trouble easily. Looking at Butters now, I no longer see the traces of her past. She now sleeps on a comfy bed, plays with toys, and most importantly, has someone to care for her. In short, she came a long way and in that short period of time became one of the strongest and happiest dogs I’ve ever met. There was no more sadness, no more pain. She was ready to move on and I knew her home was out there waiting for her.

I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason, maybe that’s why I was so overjoyed with excitement when Buttercup’s time came and the perfect home came around. It was love at first sight for Keri and Nate when they first met Buttercup. I knew from that moment this was her family, but needless to say…the moment was still a bittersweet one for me. I remembered that little 2 month old helpless puppy that I worked with everyday and couldn’t help but feel empty at the thought of her leaving. However, seeing her smiling up at me was all the confirmation I needed.

Buttercup has a family now, and when such an amazing dog like Buttercup finally finds a home to call her own, that ‘empty’ feeling never felt so good. Butters was a fighter, she fought to survive and she never gave up. Now she is finally home with two loving parents Keri and Nate, a fur-sister Jemma and two human sisters! What a happy ending for this once helpless pup. Enjoy your life Butters!

Hero Dogs Of 9/11 One Hour TV Special Premieres

On September 11, 2011 at 7pm on Animal Planet Canada, the Dog Files first TV Show premiered. Entitled, Hero Dogs Of 9/11, the one hour special was a joint effort of Dog Files, Starlight Runner Entertainment and Canadian-based KelenContent that was based on the 2010 Dog Files web episode, Hero Dogs of 9/11 which can be seen here.

The TV show premiered in the United States on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the AMC Theater in Nyack, NY. Below, is Dog Files Creator, Kenn Bell talking about the Dog Files mission to the search & rescue teams, dogs included, members of Homeland Security and the Press that attended.
