PETA Victorious In Pressuring Bebe To Stop Using Fur

UPDATED: Great News!!! Bebe has announced that they will be dropping fur from their clothing line after the winter season! What most people don’t understand is that it is cheaper to use real fur from China, than to use fake fur since China has no regulations on their fur industry. While most of the fur is from rabbits, there is a thriving cat and dog fur industry in China, much of which is mislabeled as “rabbit fur” before being exported to Western countries.

I know PeTA can be a bit crazy and hold some extreme views, but they have their moments and this is one.

P.S. I feel the Dog Files has a responsibility to tell and show the truth, I used the most non-graphic photo I could find for this story. DO NOT go looking for worse photos if you don’t want to be scarred for life.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) continue to apply pressure on Bebe executives for the use of animal fur in the retail stores clothing line. On Wednesday December 5, 2012 PETA activists assembled outside of Bebe headquarters in Brisbane, CA to protest their disapproval of the retail chain’s continued use of fur on clothing imported from China. This protest is just one of many that PETA plans to organize along with an aggressive online consumer protest campaign.

Along with recently purchasing stock in Bebe in order to attend and influence shareholder meetings, PETA also obtained 80,000 signatures requesting that Bebe stop selling fur. These actions began after PETA revealed undercover video footage exposing the cruel conditions for which cats, dogs, and rabbits are kept in Chinese fur farms. Peta Lindsay Rajit, PETA’s Associate Director International Grassroots Campaigns, tells examiner.com: “PETA has shared with Bebe executive’s footage of animals being bludgeoned, electrocuted, and sometimes even skinned alive for their fur. But despite knowing about the cruelty involved in the fur industry, Bebe continues to sell fur and support this cruel industry.”

It takes only a few online paw clicks for the disturbing images and news stories to appear. The rabbits are kept in wire cages that cuts their feet not to mention extremely confined spaces. These animals exhibit severe signs of distress due to these terrible conditions and are often tortured to death as they are slaughtered for their furs. It is haunting research that is sure to make most people reconsider shopping anywhere that profits from such cruelty.

China is the largest producer of the world’s fur because it lacks regulations, and this industry remains profitable due to the demand for fur in North America and Europe. PETA advocates the boycott of stores that profits from the sale of animal fur, and therefore support this cruelty. J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, and Ann Taylor are among the major retailers that stopped selling fur as a result of PETA’s efforts.
