Twitter Helps A Runway Dog Get Home

Reunited and it feels so good!

When Deirdre Anglin noticed Patch, her Jack Russell Terrier, was missing on Tuesday evening she did the “social media thing” and posted pictures of her dog on her Facebook account- reaching out to friends and encouraging everyone to contact her if he was spotted.

Meanwhile, Patch ended up hopping on an Irish Rail train heading to Dublin early Wednesday morning, and was nicknamed ‘Checker’ by the rail workers on board who jokingly said the dog was put onboard trained to check passenger tickets. When the train reached the Pearse Street station in Dublin (about 20 miles away from his home) and it was clear the dog’s owner was not on board the Irish Rail workers also did the social media thing and posted a ‘lost dog!’ tweet along with pictures of Patch and received 500 retweets in just over half an hour.

When Deirdre saw the tweet, she immediately tweeted back “That’s my dog!”, contacted the station and headed to Dublin. Both Deirdre and Irish Rail posted photos to Twitter showing the reunion in Dublin and Patch’s journey home. Barry Kenny, an Irish Rail spokesman had described that Twitter provided a great platform to get the message out about Patch and made it very easy for people to share/spread the message to reunite the dog with his owner. Kenny also stated to the Associated Press “It was good she showed up so quickly, because the staff in the office were getting quite attached to him.

On their train-ride home, Deirdre was approached often by people asking her if that was the dog they had seen on Twitter, and thanked everyone involved for helping reunite her with her dog. She also went on the record saying she believes Patch “has had his fill of trains, and won’t be going on them again.”
