Cincinnati news station WLWT has reported that a dog died on July 6 while chained to a pole outside the Cincinnati District 4 police station.
Authorities stated that Twon Johnson, was just a good samaritan who tried to help the dog. ”I didn’t want anything to happen to the dog, but something happened to the dog anyway,” said Johnson.
Johnson reported he saw the stray pit bull running in the area, the dog came close enough to Johnson that he could grab his leash and take him to the police station, and that upon his arrival, Cincinnati police instructed him to tie the dog up outside to a pole while they called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA.) but a short time later, the dog was found dead, tied to the pole.
Cincinnati also had record high temperatures of 101 degrees fahrenheit- which felt like anywhere from 105-110 degrees according to the weather channel. Cincinnati has also been seeing extreme and at times record breaking high temperatures for over a week.
In the photo above, you can see the pole where the dog was tied, and clearly the pole was not in any sort of shaded area and the dog was left outside in direct sunlight, in heat of over 100+ degrees for at least an hour and a half at the police station and had been running outside before that.
Officers said that ‘bringing the dog inside the station might have posed a threat to citizens.’
According to the report officials said the people at the SPCA received a non-emergency call about 5:35 p.m. reporting a stray dog at the station. About an hour and a half later, they received another call saying that they should disregard the previous call because the dog had died.
According to officers, the dog was given small bowls of water and checked on every 20 minutes but somewhere between their reported 6:40pm check and 7pm- the dog had died. The Cincinnati chief of police is conducting an investigation, and is “very concerned” about how this was handled; the SPCA is also scheduled to preform an autopsy.

I’m sorry, but how are such morons expected to serve and protect?
” Exactly” Should take each of them out and tie them out there for however long the dog was there, with no water. See how they make out!
Hey Linda, clearly you didnt read the article, it says they gave the dog WATER, also known as H2O! Geez, think BEFORE you post. And hey, HOW ABOUT THE KNUCKLEHEAD THAT OWNS THE DOG IN THE FIRST PLACE AND LET IT RUN ASTRAY!!! Geez people, hold those that are REALLY accountable instead of blaming the police for everything. Funny how no one mentions that the so called SPCA took for-ever to get there…oh wait, they didn’t even show up! SMH!!!
hey toolbox if you read article the police called spca back told them not to come the dog is dead. and just because the police said they gave water don’t mean they did.
hey numnuts, what else could they have done??? maybe the moron is YOU for posting such a ridiculous outlash.
A threat to citizens???? They do have holding cells that they could have put the dog in. And…if the dog allowed the man to leash him then he obviously was NOT aggressive thereby posing no THREAT to anyone. Unfreakin believable!
Typical. Yet another ignorant post by another ignorant person. SMH!!!!
I THINK THAT’S JUST HORRIBLE THE WAY THE POOR DOG WAS TREATED! YOU WOULD’NT WANT TO BE LEFT OUTSIDE IN THE DIRECT SUN AND HEAT!X THE DOG WOULD OF BEEN MAYBE BETTER OFF NOT BEING CAUGHT AND LEFT WITH THE POLICE THAT ARE THERE TO PROTECT PEOLE AND ANIMALS!! I CRIED THE WHOLE TIME I READ THE STORY! I FEEL SO BAD FOR THE DOG AND IT’S FAMILY!!
Yea, feel soo bad for its family, yet the family FAILED to confine, keep, handle, harbor they’re own freaking pet! SMH!!!
do u know if the dog got away or they let him/her out. It doesn’t matter how he got out it was the cops that took responsibility, and if that is how responsible they are then I feel sorry for the place they are policing. U r blaming the victim. I have 3 dog & they have ran out the door when letting the other out. According to what u say it seems that what happened didn’t matter because some person let the dog out or got away.
Checked on “every 20 minutes” my ASS! More like “after every 20 donuts…”
Sinwood must have wood for a brain!
The LE officers that made this decision to leave this poor dog to die in the sun are the THREAT to citizens… and their canine companions.
Where is the due diligence in this? There wasn’t any.
Those police need their badges taken away ASAP
Most “officers” are morons.
unacceptable, horrible way for the poor dog to die..
It would have been more humane to the poor dog if they’d just shot him !
so i am pretty sure a stray dog is the least dangerous thing coming or going through any police station… i am rapidly losing all respect and faith in the polices’ integrity and common sense.
WATER DOESN’T MATTER IF THE DOG IS IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. THEY CAN’T SWEAT TO COOL DOWN YOU STUPID PIGS! AMERICA CLAIMS TO BE A MAJOR DOG LOVING COUNTRY, YET OUR “AUTHORITY FIGURES”, WHETHER IT BE THE PIGS OR THE CROOKED POLITICIANS, (I KNOW…CROOKED POLITICIAN IS LIKE SAYING THE SAME THING TWICE), TREAT OUR BEST FRIEND AS PROPERTY WITH NO RIGHTS OR THOUGHTS OF DECENCY. PEOPLE ARE SUCH SHIT!
I dont believe the dog was given any water quite frankly. We expect the Police to be truthful but I dont think theyre telling the truth here. I doubt the dog wouldve died if it had water, even in that heat. The other thing you expect Police to be is intelligent and obviously who ever was in charge of this dog was an idiot to even concider tieing the dog up outside in such temperature.
I want to know why the SPCA didn’t show up when called! An hour and a half? Inexcusable. On everyone’s part. I can’t imagine how much misery that poor soul went through.
Stupid and cruel. There was NO indication the dog was dangerous. I would have taken him to the shelter MYSELF! What incompetents!
Of course, blame the cops. Typical “catch all” to everything and everyone. I’m wondering when the race card is gonna be played here…
I am normally not one to ‘harp’ on what the police do, and I know many officers and appreciate the fact they put their lives on the line to protect. The fact in this matter is lack of common sense- the dog was surrendered to police and they accepted responsibility to contain the dog until the SPCA arrived- they placed the call as a non emergency while leaving the dog in unbearable conditions with no access to any type of shelter, which is per the Ohio revised code cruelty to a companion animal. In this case, and cases like it regarding everyday citizens, I firmly believe that action should be taken- simply because it is NOT ok to treat any living thing like that whether you are an officer of the law, celebrity, average John Doe…treating a dog, person, or otherwise in that nature is wrong.
Who exactly is to blame here might be debatable but one thing is for sure…the police knew the dog was there and in the sun with temps over 100. They were the last line of defense for that poor dog. They had the power and ability to do something and didnt. Oh and assuming they did actually put water out (i dont think so) that still wouldnt have helped.
Yet another sad death of a Pit. When is this going to stop?!
R u kidding me, if they checked every 20 min’s then the dog would be alive. What a bunch of &*cking liars/morons. They serve and protect, bull_____.
