Couple In Trouble For Calling 911 About Dog

Oreo the Great Dane
Oreo the Great Dane

O’FALLON, MO – An O’Fallon, Missouri couple considered it an absolute emergency, their beloved Great Dane collapsed right in front of them. They called 911 for help. Now, they’re in trouble with police; still grieving the loss of their dog.

Rose and Randy Lakey are due in O’Fallon, Missouri Municipal Court next month. People may think that’s as it should be, they did call 911 for their dog Easter Sunday. But it wasn’t just any dog.

“She was on the front page of the Post-Dispatch,” Rose Lakey said.

The newspaper is framed along with a collage of several photos of her beloved dog, Oreo, a 4 year old harlequin – black and white spotted Great Dane.

The newspaper coverage came from Oreo`s appearance in the 2009 Soulard Pet Parade. Oreo wore a pink tutu.

She also got onto the field at Busch Stadium for a pooches in the park event.

“I sent Tony LaRussa a picture of her. He sent us tickets to take her down to the ball game,” Rose said. “ it was the hardest thing I`ve ever been through .. It really was.”

“It was so fast and we were so upset, that all I could think of was to tell her we have to call for help,” Randy Lake said.

With a dog the size of Oreo, the Lakeys certainly needed help.

Oreo was like their third daughter, only bigger than their two grown girls; now in their 20`s and no longer living at home.
The Lakeys said Oreo stood 6`4? on her hind legs and weighed 140lbs.

“And she just collapsed and fell into the wall and down to the ground; nothing, I mean it was just so quick,” Rose said. “I tried to get my arms underneath her like you would if you were going to try to pick up a child. When I went to try to get her up off the ground, I could barely get her off the ground at all. When I did, her head and her legs and everything …she was just out of it.”

They said an ambulance crew and police arrived within minutes of their 911 call. They said one ambulance worker made it clear there was a problem.

“She got into the middle of the room and she seen Oreo and she threw her hands up and said, `It`s a dog are you kidding me?` Then she turned and walked away. Then she started yelling out to the policeman, `it`s just a dog`.”

She said the other crew member brought oxygen for Oreo and helped load her into their car.

They got her to an emergency clinic, but it was too late.

It`d be hard enough to move on, with Oreo`s ashes all that remain of her. But the day after she died, police brought a summons for filing a false 911 report. Apparently Rose Lakey referred to both her dog and her daughters during the call.

“24 hours later, they give me a ticket, for asking for help,” Randy Lakey said.

“There was no sympathy at all. There was no understanding at all. He just acted like we planned all of this,” Rose said.

“You know, it was not intentional. We didn`t mislead anybody. We just needed help. There`s nothing false about that,” Randy said.

Police said a 911 recording showed Rose Lakey clearly said her “daughter” needed help. She didn`t deny it; it could have happened given her hysterical state. Still, she said she knows she said “dog” at the beginning of the call. The Lakeys hoped for a little more understanding from police.

They`ll likely face a fine.

Perhaps it was an inappropriate use of public services—-and in that situation I probably would have panicked and done the same thing this couple did.  I loved my beagle just like I love my kids.  However, the lack of empathy, concern, or just plain human kindness on the part of this EMS squad is reprehsneible and suggests to me they should not be allowed anywhere near human patients either.  Do any communities have an emergency squad for pets?

What the ambulance driver neglected to understand when she threw her arms up and said ,”it’s a dog!!!” is that to a vast majority of dog owners ,we do think of our dogs as our beloved children. How heartless some people can be.I am so sorry and sad for your loss of oreo,my heart grieves for you.RIP oreo : ( Xox

Unbelievable that no one – the EMS or police – would be compassionate and not only see that the dog was in severe distress, but the emotional toll it was taking on her owners! This goes beyond reprehension! Unfortunately, we cannot teach compassion nor caring….it has to come a place much deeper than the brain! It is called a soul. Apparently, those who responded didn’t have one.
I hope that a judge will be smart enough to throw out any charges, as there shouldn’t have been any in the first place!
Hopefully, there will be a day when we have a 911 for animal calls. Most emergency vet clinics are available when our vet clinics are closed, however it takes time to look up their numbers – sometimes precious moments that should be used trying to care for a sick or injured pet.
My heart goes out to this family!!!

I have heard where firemen rescue family pets and resuscitate them.  Why in this particular case would this have been inappropriate use of public services?  You need help- you call 911…  Rather that family member has fur or not…  Everyone should be trained in basic rescue training for humans and animals…  🙂  My heart goes out to Oreos family…  They were trying to save their daughter- I am sure I would have done the same thing- in the same situation!

I think the emergency crew should have done something, since they were at the scene already. You can really tell a persons character by the way they treats animals.Animals are sentient beings & should be treated as such. The fire department will rescue a cat in a tree. What makes these emergency workers so insensitive. In my opinion the comment made “It’s a dog are you kidding me”,shows her lack of empathy towards an innocent animal. This person obviously has a lot to learn about compassion.

They were on the scene because the family lied about their dog being their “daughter”….. cats will come out of trees by theirselves if giving the chance……… people are very mixed up on priorities……….

I am so very sorry for your loss. It’s still so unbelievable to me how anyone could respond so heartlessly. Is there anything we can do to support you in this case? Somewhere we could write letters of support? Hopefully the loss of Oreo can effect change in people’s attitudes and services that should be offered.

This just makes me angry and tells me just how much compassion this world lacks.  I work in Fire and EMS and I have worked hard to save pets on scenes, it would be different if it is one of their pets.  I am very sorry for their loss and I hope the community will stand behind them.  If it is a fine then I say have a community fund raiser to pay it, I would of called if I needed help, it isn’t any worse than some of the people calling for help that truly don’t need it.

The owners pay taxes like everyone else for use of public service.
If they can’t call for help, who can they call.

That is so true!! They’ve probably never had to call 911. This is awful!! I can’t imagine in the middle of this one having an attitude & yelling “it’s a dog” I’ll be she doesn’t have pets!! What a jerk! I’ve seen stories where first responders have gone into a frozen lake to save a dog, happily!! Then put it in the ambulance & treated it for hypothermia! I just can’t imagine being so heartless! Sorry for your loss!

Really! she was in a panic for god’s sake you’re going to remember 911 better than your vet’s number i think the callousness of the police and ems is disgusting and then to charge the couple while they are having to deals with their dog’s death. Really!
the officers and ems should be ashamed of their selves they probably weren’t doing anything anyway. Please accept our deepest sympathies in the loss of your beloved pet.

This is a very sad story.  There is no excuse for the callousness of the medic.  As a paramedic, I do understand that we cannot transport dogs in ambulances.  What if they had taken the dog and then another call came in for a human cardiac emergency?  How would that family feel if it took too long for an ambulance to get to them because the duty crew was taking a dog to a veterinarian?  That being said, the paramedics could have helped get the dog into the family vehicle, especially it being a Great Dane and very big.  Also could have helped by contacting the Emergency Clinic where they were heading.  And by showing some compassion. I am a paramedic, veterinary technician, and Great Dane owner, and I can see all sides of this sad situation.  My heart goes out to the family.  And, no, I do not think they should face a fine.  We get all kinds of ridiculous calls and I have never heard of anyone being fined.

Your mother just suffered a stroke, or your child was just struck by a car, but the ambulance and EMTs are too busy responding to a call because a dog has collapsed……..  seriously??? I think many people here are very misguided about the important things in life, I love and enjoy pets as much as the next person, but I still have my priorities correct.  When you put your dog’s life above everything else, you are sadly, a very misguided individual……..

I live in Philadelphia PA and I have a neighbor who calls 911 constantly about some so called rubber stamp machines in my basement (among other things).  We have the police here constantly.  I wish someone would give her a citation.  But, I probably would”ve done the same thing for my dog if that happened to me.  I’m sorry you lost the dog.  You have my sympathy.  I know how you feel to loose a beloved pet, a member of the family.  My dogs & my cat are considered my “KIDS”.  I’m so sorry for your loss.

Folks…take a breath. I realize this is probably wasted, as it’s apparent that most of you have taken complete leave of your senses, but you DO realize the difference between human and animal life, correct?

A couple of things happen when you dial 911 for a medical emergency…the MOST important of which is that HUMAN life is placed in danger…both the responders and the public. This particular call generated response from an ambulance, a fire truck and at least 2 PD units, running hot. The reason we respond code is because, in theory, a HUMAN life is in danger. That offsets the danger to the responders and the public.
These people LIED to the 911 dispatcher, and placed dozens of HUMAN lives in danger, for their pet. NO amount of panic or sadness at the illness of their pet justifies the danger they exposed HUMANS to. HUMAN life does not EVER equal animal life. Lets revisist that. HUMAN life does not EVER equal animal life. You can blather about humanitarianism all day and all night, but had a HUMAN been injured of killed in this escapade…please tell me how you justify that? The responding fire engine hits a car at an intersection because the driver failed to notice the lights and sirens, and it kills an 8 year old girl….you people are going to try and sell that humanitarianism covers that?

My life as a FF/Paramedic is NEVER worth losing over a dog. Humans are injured and killed every day in this country in code response collisions…it is THE MOST dangerous thing by FAR that I do in a profession that includes me running in to burning buildings.

Most of you folks seem to be taking the danger aspects of this lightly…let me assure you, that is wrongheaded. You can consider your pets your children, but I have an actual child…and if I get capped responding to a collapsed pet….which one of you is going to explain to her that it was worth it? Now, as an aside…I’d also like to point out that the EMS crew is not trained in veterinary medicine. There was NOTHING that they could do for the dog. I am unique…I was an RVT before I joined the FD…I have helped several animals in my career…I love me some dogs and cats…I resuscitated a cat at a house fire once…ONLY after it was determined that no humans needed my help, and I wasn’t diverting resources from humans.

So, you folks flame away…but I’m 100% right here. These people deserved the ticket, and if I had MY way, they’d come spend some time riding in my rig so they can personally see how astoundingly hazardous it is to respond code. If you doubt me, ask ANY 911 responder, or take a few minutes and look up the stats for Line of Duty deaths among first responders.

Scott, I am a paramedic also, and I do understand that people should not call 911 for a dog.  But the real question here is, do they deserve a ticket and fine?  Did these people knowingly deceive the dispatcher and pretend the dog was a human so paramedics would come?   From what I read, I dont believe this is the case.  They obviously panicked, and said their “baby” or “daughter” was not breathing.  I don’t think this was deception.  If they think of this dog as their child, they were just calling out for help.  This is a case where the people need to be educated, not punished.  There are plenty of abusers of the system, but I do not think this is one of those cases.

Scott, your obviously a person without compassion and shouldn’t be a medic. How many times does this really happen in life. Whats wrong with helping someone who probably would have had a heart attack if someone didn’t help them? You obviously don’t have pets either.

Yes i make you right, a human life must come before an animal, by the way i live in England, although on the local news the local news the other night, they showed foreign workers stubbing out a cigarette on a pigs snout, now this makes me really angry, the poor beast was screaming in pain. They have been arrested, good i would like to stub a cigrette out on their you know whats. we have 999 over here. any way the service should never be abused for animals, we sadly lost our own staffie  6 weeks ago, we knew she was bad so we rang the vet, put her in the car and took her ourselves to the vet. so were not all stupid, and we can apreciate how it feels to lose a beloved pet

WE’RE NOT IDIOTS.  WE KNOW THAT EMS WORKERS PUT THEIR LIVES IN DANGER EVERY DAY.  THESE PEOPLE PANICKED WHEN THEIR BELOVED PET COLLAPSED THAT DAY.  I’M SURE THEY DIDN’T SAY TO THEMSELVES, HEY LETS CALL FOR HELP AND PUT LIVES IN DANGER TO SAVE A DOG.  WE MAKE SOME UNREASONABLE DECISIONS WHEN WE’RE IN THESE SITUATIONS.  BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE CALL & DISPATCHED THE EMS TEAM TO THE RESIDENCE.  THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TRAINED KEEP THEIR COOL WHEN OTHERS ARE LOSING THEIRS.   IF THEY TOOK THE TIME TO GET THE INFORMATION RIGHT IN THE 1ST PLACE, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE SENT THE RESCUE & FIRE DEPT OUT.  IF THEY WERE DOING THEIR JOB PROPERLY, AND GOT ALL OF THE INFORMATION THEY COULD HAVE HANDLED THE CALL PROPERLY AND NO ONE WOULD’VE BEEN PUT IN DANGER BY THE EMERGENCY PERSONNEL SPEEDING TO THE SCENE.  MAYBE THEY COULD’VE CALLED THE PROPER RESCUE PERSONNEL FOR THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION.  MAYBE THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE CALL SHOULD BE RE-TRAINED.  THIS PERSON WAS THE IDIOT WHO PUT EVERYONE’S LIFE IN JEOPARDY.  LIKE I SAID, PEOPLE PANIC & DON’T THINK CLEARLY IN THESE SITUATIONS. THAT’S WHAT MAKES US HUMAN IN THE 1ST PLACE.  IF MY HOUSE WAS BURNING I WOULDN’T RUN OUT WITHOUT MY ANIMALS. NOW YOU GET THEIR & FIND OUT THAT I WAS TRAPPED BECAUSE I DECIDED TO RISK MY OWN LIFE TO SAVE MY DOG, WOULD YOU DECIDE THAT MY LIFE WASN’T WORTH SAVING BECAUSE I WOULDN’T BE IN THEIR IF I WOULD HAVE CHOSE TO RUN OUT & LEAVE MY PETS BEHIND?  I HOPE I DON’T LIVE IN YOUR DISTRICT.   YOU SEE ON THE NEWS MANY TIMES WHERE ANIMALS ARE RESCUED FROM DRAIN PIPES; CATS ARE RESCUED FROM TREES ETC.  NO TIME HAVE I EVER HEARD THAT ANY RESCUE PERSON TURNED & LEFT THESE ANIMALS TO DIE.  THEY INSTEAD CHOOSE TO HELP SAVE THESE ANIMALS AND THEIR HERO’S FOR DOING SO.  I’VE NEVER HEARD ABOUT ANY STORIES WHERE THEY SAY THEY RESCUED ALL OF THE KITTENS FROM A DRAIN PIPE BUT THE OWNER RECEIVED A TICKET.

MY NEIGHBOR WHO IS CONSIDERED A 302 (MENTAL CASE) CALLS 911 EVERY DAY, AND I MEAN EVERYDAY, SOMETIMES NUMEROUS TIMES A DAY FOR STUPID THINGS.  THE POLICE COME EVERY TIME.  WE’VE BEEN TOLD; BY THE RESPONDING OFFICERS THAT THEY HAVE TO COME BECAUSE IT’S THE LAW.  EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW SHE’S CRAZY THEY STILL HAVE TO COME.  IN 1 YEAR THEY CAME TO MY HOME OVER 1500 TIMES. I’VE LIVED HERE FOR 15+ YEARS.  AND THIS DIDN’T START WITH ME.  SHE DID THIS TO THE PREVIOUS OWNERS AS WELL.  NOW ISN’T THAT ENDANGERING OTHERS?  JUST BECAUSE THEY AREN’T SPEEDING THRU THE STREETS TO GET HERE DOESN’T MEAN THAT SOMEONE ELSE MAY OR MAY NOT BE ENDANGERED BECAUSE OF IT.  WHILE THEY’RE HERE, THEY’RE NOT AVAILABLE TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO MAY REALLY NEED HELP.  IF I’M WASHING MY FRONT SIDEWALK, SHE CALLS BECAUSE HER SIDEWALK GETS WET TOO.  SHE HEARS THE MACHINES THAT DON’T EXIST, THEY COME.  THEY’VE KNOCKED AT MY DOOR AT 3 AM BECAUSE SHE CLAIMED WE WERE PLAYING MUSIC TOO LOUD.  MY HOUSE WAS DARK AND THEY OBVIOUSLY KNEW THAT IT WAS QUIET, BUT THEY KNOCKED & WOKE ME UP OUT OF BED & WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR THEY WINKED AT ME LIKE THEY WERE JUST HUMORING HER & ASKED ME TO TURN DOWN THE STEREO.  I HAVE TO GET UP FOR WORK AT 5 AM.  IN THE MEANTIME SOMEONE AROUND THE CORNER COULD BE GETTING ROBBED OR THERE’S A HOME INVASION BUT THEY CAN’T GET A COP QUICKLY BECAUSE THEY’RE HERE.  IT’S A JOKE. I’VE TOLD MY NEIGHBORS MANY TIMES THAT IF THEY NEED A COP IN A HURRY, COME TO MY HOUSE. IF THEY WOULD WRITE MY NEIGHBOR A CITATION FOR EVERY TIME SHE CALLS 911 FOR NO REASON HOW MUCH MONEY WOULD THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA MAKE EACH YEAR? PROBABLY ENOUGH TO PAY EVERY COP’S SALARY.   SHE EVEN CALLED THE FIRE DEPT. BECAUSE SHE WAS COMPLAINING THAT MY GRILL WAS TOO CLOSE TO OUR FENCE & THEY CAME.  THEY LEFT A NOTE ON MY DOOR TO CALL THEM & I DID.  THE PERSON FROM THE FIRE DEPT. ASKED ME TO MOVE MY GRILL TO THE OTHER SIDE OF MY YARD SO SHE WOULDN’T BOTHER HIM ANYMORE.  I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT THE REASON THE GRILL WAS THERE IN THE 1ST PLACE WAS BECAUSE SHE CALLED THE POLICE THE DAY BEFORE ABOUT MY TRASH CANS BEING THERE SO I MOVED THE TRASH TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE YARD AND MOVED THE GRILL TO THAT SIDE INSTEAD.  IT’S A CHARCOAL GRILL, NOT A GAS GRILL, IT WON’T SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST.  I ASSURED HIM THAT WHEN I COOK I PULL THE GRILL AWAY FROM THE HOUSE TO PREVENT A FIRE.  SHE DIDN’T GET A TICKET FOR THAT EITHER.  SO LIKE I SAID, PEOPLE PANIC AND MAKE POOR CHOICES BUT LET’S BE FAIR HERE.  SHOW SOME COMPASSION FOR THESE PEOPLE.  IT MAY HAVE BEEN A DOG BUT IT’S STILL A LOVED MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY.

I would just like to say that as a volunteer at a local fire department that I would have done the same thing. The same thing as the medic and the same thing as if I was Oreo’s mom. Here at our fire department, we are a small town, but if there is anyway that we can help we would.  We spent hours trying to save someones horse that was stuck. Unfortunaltly we could not. We did not have the tools to do it. We still spent the hours we could trying to help. But, the family of that horse rallied to help get us the tools. We received the wenches we needed from their hard work. The tools that would have save the horse. We take pride in our compassion. I’m sorry that your going through this. I lost my best friend over a year ago and it still hurts. They ARE family.

Considering the comments about it being just a dog, I guess that is the reason when you see people or “kids” getting hurt or killed, many go by and say, WTF, it is just another dumb ass kid.  millions more where that thing came from.

This was not a false 911 report, which implies intentional deception. They work EMS and LE – have they never seen parents before? No one should ever think twice about calling 911 when they panic, and these people were simply panicking like any other parents. No, we don’t respond to animal emergencies, but we – indeed humans in general – have a higher call to compassion, care, understanding, and kindness. It’s tricky because you don’t want people to get the idea they can call 911 for their pets and claim ignorance. But there’s no excuse to say “it’s just a dog” in front of the parents. They could have helped the family deal with the problem at hand (which it sounds like one EMT did), then educated the parents on the limits of the system after the incident. As for them endangering peoples’ lives? I don’t want people thinking about that when they call for help. I don’t want people to hesitate, I want them to call first, think ‘oops’ later. When someone calls 911 without intending to abuse the system, theirs is the most important emergency in my life.

Is it possible that this couple did “know better” and just hope they could get away with it? Sure. But I’d rather have that happen than have someone who read this story die of a pulmonary embolism because he put the phone back down when he felt a sense of impending doom and thought “that’s not a good enough reason to call for help – I could endanger other people and be charged with filing a false report if there’s nothing wrong”.
