Buster tried to stop the bad guys.
When his home in St. Paul was burglarized, the 9-year-old boxer fought and wound up getting stabbed.
He suffered more than nine wounds to his chest, face and shoulder. His teeth were kicked in. His jaw was left exposed.
Sometime Thursday morning, at least one person broke into the home in the 1800 block of East Maryland Avenue while everyone but Buster – and two other furry companions – was gone. The burglar got in by breaking a kitchen window, said Brandie Wagaman, 16, who lives there.
When her father, Larry Wagaman, returned home that morning from a trip to Fleet Farm, he found blood throughout the house, Brandie said. Buster was found in his kennel in the basement.
“My dog fought them all through the house,” she said. “He pretty much saved our house. If he wasn’t here, they would have took more.”
Guns and Anoka County Corrections Department shirts were taken, said St. Paul police spokesman Howie Padilla. The shirts are tan and have department patches on each sleeve. Under one patch is an American flag.
Padilla noted that wearing one of the shirts to impersonate a law enforcement officer would be illegal.
Julie Smith, Brandie Wagaman’s mother, said a laptop and a necklace were among other belongings stolen.
Police haven’t determined if more than one burglar was involved.
Two other dogs – another boxer and a miniature pinscher – were at home at the time of the burglary, Brandie Wagaman said. Neither of those dogs was injured.
Buster was taken to the University of Minnesota, where he was treated for his wounds. He underwent surgery on his mouth Monday at Life Care Animal Hospital of St. Paul.
“He will recover,” Smith said.
In St. Paul, reports of residential burglaries are up compared with last year. As of Sept. 30, there were 1,973 reports, according to police. In 2010 at that time, there were 1,793. In 2009 and 2008, there were 1,650 and 1,794, respectively.

someone was in your house,” Smith said.
A fund for Buster has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank at 1379 Phalen Blvd., Smith said. It’s called “Buster’s Fund.”

Our condolences to Jennifer Thomas on her loss.
KELSO, Wash. – An English Bulldog that a Woodland, Wash., woman said was stolen from outside her home earlier this month and held for ransom was found dead by railroad tracks in Kelso, Wash., according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said a Kelso resident called them Monday to report a dead dog by the tracks that was hit by a passing train. When deputies arrived on the scene, they said it appeared the dog was the missing dog from Woodland named “Jaggar.”
Deputies said the dog’s remains were recovered and taken to the Cowlitz County Humane Society for an exam Tuesday. The dog was killed an estimated 48-72 hours before the remains were found, deputies said.
Jaggar’s owner Jennifer Thomas told KATU News earlier this month that her dog was taken from her driveway on Oct. 5. Three days later, Thomas said she received photos of her dog and text messages that demanded $1,000 and her prescription pain killer drugs.
In an interview with KATU News, Thomas read a text message that said “If you don’t do exactly as you’re told the next few messages will be of your friend slowly getting tortured to death. And do us both a favor, keep this to yourself, no cops.”
Thomas did not hear from the caller or callers again, deputies said.
“This appears to be a sad ending to this part of the investigation,” said Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson. “It doesn’t mean that we’re done with the investigation. We’ll follow any leads we get to find out who took Jaggar.”
Thomas told KATU News she saw two people in her driveway before she discovered her dog was missing.
Deputies said they told Thomas that Jaggar’s remains were found.

A dog in South Africa, found buried alive in a Khayelitsha school sportsfield, has been named Warrior by her rescuers. In what has been dubbed “one of the worst reported cases of animal abuse in Cape Town yet”, the dog was rescued on Thursday morning after it was found buried alive in a pit at Luhlaza Secondary School. Two suspects were arrested by police late on Thursday afternoon.
Photographs show the dog being dug out of the pit, its small, sand-covered face peering at its rescuers. Christine Pretorius, spokeswoman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said the dog had recovered well from the ordeal. “The dog’s fine. It’s in good condition. It’s eating ravenously now. The dog is slightly disabled, probably as a result of earlier injuries from a motor vehicle accident. It is limping quite badly. It’s got a lot of sand in its eyes and they’ll continue to flush it out.”
She said the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha had received an anonymous tip-off at 8.30am to say that janitors at the Luhlaza Secondary School had allegedly been spotted digging a hole on the perimeter of the sportsfield and burying a live dog in it. “Veterinarian Dr Edson Man’Ombe and Animal Welfare carer Lazola Sotyingwa immediately rushed to the school and apprehended two janitors on the school field. The men initially claimed the dog was dead, but on further questioning admitted the animal was still alive when they buried it,” Pretorius said. “They said one of the school’s senior supervisors had told them to get rid of the dog as it was being a nuisance by hanging around the classrooms.”
Man’Ombe and Sotyingwa then instructed the men to open the pit and the dog, a crossbreed, was found barely alive at the bottom of a hole between one and 1.5m deep. It was rushed to the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and the care of professional veterinarians. Pretorius said the names of the janitors, and the supervisor who allegedly told them to dispose of the dog, were known to the clinic and a criminal complaint had been lodged at the Lingelethu Police Station in Khayelitsha. Police arrested two 59-year-old men, spokesman Frederick van Wyk said.
