Meet The Dog With The Biggest Ears In The World

September 14, 2011 in Celebrity, Entertainment, Lifestyle News, News

Big Dog Ears

Harbor is an 8-year old Black and Tan Coonhound with big ears. His ears are so big, he now holds the Guinness World record for the Longest Ears on a Living Dog.

This particular breed of dog is known for its larger ears, but Harbor’s ears are off the charts. His left ear measures 12.25 inches and his right is a whopping 13.5 inches. Ever since he was a pup, Harbor has been tripping over his ears though it has lessened as he has gotten older, says owner Jennifer Wert.

But these large ears are not for show or even for improved hearing, Coonhounds use their large ears to help them smell their environment. As they walk, their ears flop around their face and push scents towards their nose.

Awesome!

Dog Who Ate, Pooped 100 Rocks Is Contest Front-Runner

September 13, 2011 in Contest, Lifestyle News, News

If pooping out rocks was a skill, a Pug from Rhode Island would be the most talented dog in the country.

Instead, Harley the Pug will have to settle for a potential “Hambone Award,’’ given out annually by Veterinary Pet Insurance. Each year since 2009, the company has nominated the 12 most unusual and outrageous pet insurance claims that it receives out of tens of thousands. The award is named after a dog that was stuck in a refrigerator and chowed through an entire Thanksgiving ham before being found.

The good news is all nominees made full recoveries and received their insurance money.

The clubhouse leader this year is Harley, who ate more than 100 rocks and then pooped them out to the horror and astonishment of his owner, Lori Laverdiere of Manville, Rhode Island.

Harley’s competition includes a Terrier that bit a chainsaw while it was running, a Chihuahua that was snatched by a great horned owl in the middle of the night, and an English Mastiff that was kicked by a mule.

But even among that distinguished company, Harley’s story has captivated Hambone Award voters on VPI’s website. While on a walk with his owner one day, Harley started pooping out rocks like he was Hansel and Gretel leaving a trail of bread crumbs. Harley soon became ill, unable to eat or drink without vomiting. So Laverdiere rushed him to an emergency animal hospital, where X-rays revealed his stomach and intestines were jammed with more than 100 rocks. After taking some medication, Harley passed the small stones without needing surgery.

Also nipping at Harley’s heels in the race is Chico, a 3-year-old Chihuahua from Crystal Lake, Illinois, who became ensnared in the talons of a great horned owl when owner George Kalomiris took him for a walk at 1:30 a.m.

Chico was secured to a leash when the owl snatched him, so it soon became a tug of war between Kalomiris and the large bird — with Chico in the middle. Eye-to-eye with the owl, Kalomiris fought it off as it dragged Chico through the snow. Chico suffered a small puncture wound on his right foreleg in the battle with the bird, which had a five-foot wingspan.

Other nominees from this year include a Golden Retriever that was bit on the nose by a snapping turtle, a Dachshund that was attacked by a seagull, and another Golden Retriever that had a 25-pound otter clamp down on its nose.

Previous winners include Ellie, a Labrador that ate a beehive, and Lulu, an English Bulldog that scarfed down 15 baby pacifiers.

Connecticut Man Tries To Free Dog From Pound

September 13, 2011 in Animal Control, Law Enforcement, News

Trouble kept adding up last weekend for a Connecticut man who was suspected of cutting power to a dog pound and scaling its barbed wire fence in an effort to liberate his small hound with “special needs”.

The man, Walter Scovish, 55, was arrested by West Hartford, Connecticut police September 3 on drug charges and locked up overnight. He was taken into custody again on September 4 on suspicion of larceny. Early Labor Day he was found in the woods near the pound after officers responded to an alarm.

When he was apprehended, Scovish demanded to check on the welfare of his dog before he was taken back to the West Hartford lockup.

Scovish’s troubles with the law started way back on July 3 when his 2003 Taurus was impounded and his dog, Missy, an Italian Greyhound, was handed over to Animal Control after police said he was found with a bag of heroin and a hypodermic needle in a West Hartford, Connecticut parking lot.

Police said Scovish was continually concerned for Missy while in jail and was warned repeatedly not to visit the pound before it reopened after Labor Day.

“Scovish [said] his dog had special needs and that he was planning on sleeping at the dog pound until the Animal Control Officer arrived,” police said in an arrest report.

As it turned out, however, Scovish broke into the fire department training grounds behind the pound and into a nearby landscaping business, allegedly stealing items.

When police arrived at the pound, the power was off and wires and an electrical meter were missing from the building. A pair of blue boxer shorts was slung on a roof to the kennel. Police speculated that Scovish placed the underpants on the barbed wire to protect his hands.

There was no indication Scovish was able to reach Missy inside the kennel.

“[The dog] was scared,” West Hartford animal control supervisor Karen Jones said Wednesday.

“[On Tuesday] a relative came by to pick her up. She was very happy to go.”

The Story Of Buttercup: Dog Files Success Story

September 13, 2011 in Adoption News, Dog Files News, Dog Files Success Stories, Endangerment, News

When we first got Buttercup.

When we first got Buttercup.

On June 13th, a special 2 month old mangey puppy came into my life. Covered in scabs, bloody with open wounds, swollen from secondary skin infections, eye infections, and urinary tract infections. This little girl was a complete mess. The question was, how did a young puppy end up in a such a pitiful state? Well, this puppy was a pure example and image of what we call neglect.

Introducing Buttercup…regardless of the obvious discomfort, this little girl would wag her tail every time my eyes met hers. For a young puppy who merely entered the world 2 month ago, her happy-go-lucky personality easily disguised the horrors of her past.

Buttercup was taken from a guy who acquired her from his neighbors, they were planning on killing her with a rock, due to her “conditions”! You would think this guy’s intentions were to save her life, however, that was far from the case. The truth was, he wanted to breed her instead! After escaping a near death experience, Buttercup was found in the backyard deteriorating slowly waiting for help to arrive.

I could never grasp the thought of being so defenseless with no one to care for you…Just the thought of her sitting alone broke my heart, it was a reality I didn’t want to believe in. Sadly, I knew this kind of neglect happens all too often. Regardless, I wanted things to be different for her. On the day I picked her up, I promised her a second chance.

Buttercup Before And After

Buttercup Before And After

In a short three month period time, Buttercup had fought off all her medical issues and even learned how to jump onto the bed. Even better, she also mastered the art of manipulation, charming her way out of trouble easily. Looking at Butters now, I no longer see the traces of her past. She now sleeps on a comfy bed, plays with toys, and most importantly, has someone to care for her. In short, she came a long way and in that short period of time became one of the strongest and happiest dogs I’ve ever met. There was no more sadness, no more pain. She was ready to move on and I knew her home was out there waiting for her.

I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason, maybe that’s why I was so overjoyed with excitement when Buttercup’s time came and the perfect home came around. It was love at first sight for Keri and Nate when they first met Buttercup. I knew from that moment this was her family, but needless to say…the moment was still a bittersweet one for me. I remembered that little 2 month old helpless puppy that I worked with everyday and couldn’t help but feel empty at the thought of her leaving. However, seeing her smiling up at me was all the confirmation I needed.

Buttercup has a family now, and when such an amazing dog like Buttercup finally finds a home to call her own, that ‘empty’ feeling never felt so good. Butters was a fighter, she fought to survive and she never gave up. Now she is finally home with two loving parents Keri and Nate, a fur-sister Jemma and two human sisters! What a happy ending for this once helpless pup. Enjoy your life Butters!
