California Woman Reunited With Service Dog After Losing Her At Six Flags

Lost Dog Six FlagsA woman was upset with a Southern California amusement park for taking her support dog from her car and then losing her.

Shelanon Brooks says her dog, “Malibu,” was prescribed by her doctor for emotional support. But on Monday the distraught young woman experienced major stress when her dog was lost by Six Flags officials.

A Six Flags Magic Mountain spokesperson insists they were actually rescuing Brooks’ pet from a sweltering car. They placed the 1-year-old Pomeranian in the park’s dog kennel where it escaped while an employee was filling the pooch’s water bowl.

“I really love my dog and I wouldn’t let anything happen to her,” Brooks sobbed. “I thought she was OK, I thought she was OK. And I keep thinking what I could have did different.”

Brooks was going to take Malibu into the park with her, but the bag she used to carry the dog had ripped. She said she decided to leave him in the car with the windows rolled down, a dish with food, and a bowl filled with water.

When park security discovered the dog inside the car however, they noticed that it was visibly “distressed.” The temperature that day was in the 80s.

“Our security personnel and the sheriff saw the dog, which they thought was dead,” according to Six Flags spokesperson Sue Carpenter.

“ broke into the car to get the dog out. We brought it over here to the dog kennel, revived it, gave it some water and cooled it down,” Carpenter said.

While the dog’s water was being replenished, the kennel door was left open and Malibu ran out the front door and into the parking lot.

Six Flags officials say it’s standard policy to rescue dogs from cars. They also say they aren’t responsible for the pet while it’s in their care.

“We do in-park announcements and we leave messages on your windshield to let you know where your animal is, and that no animal should be left in the car — that’s the law,” Carpenter said.

Happily this story does have a happy ending as Brooks was reunited with Malibu on Tuesday after the people who found the dog saw the story on TV.

Brooks said she didn’t believe she was putting Malibu in danger.

Well, which is it? Did the dog seem “dead” or “distressed?”

First of all, I’ve never heard of a doctor “prescribing” a Pomeranian but if the dog helped the woman’s emotional state then more power to her.  Secondly, the woman is an idiot for trying to bring the dog into the park in the first place and an even bigger idiot for leaving it in the park.  A service dog that should be allowed entry into a them park should be one used for medical issues, not a Paris Hilton pet kept in a bag.  Lastly, she failed big time when she left the dog in a hot car.  With temps in the 80s it can get very hot in a confined space with no breeze or moving air.  I’m sorry but this story sounds like a cry for attention and pity.  Get a life, lady.

AGREED! I am trying not to judge this woman but “she didn’t believe she was putting the dog in danger”? how stable is she if she needs a support dog in the first place?!! and leaving it in the car..people’s stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Was the dog gonna “support” her while she was  riding rollercoasters all day?  These people could have potentially saved her dogs life and she is upset with them. Imagine the emotional issues she would have had she come to her car to find a roasted pomeranian! People say pets are like kids..would you leave kids in the car and go into an amusement park all day!?!

It is the law to license your dog, it is the law to not leave your dog (or cat or any other animal) in your car…whether the windows are rolled down or not (but obviously people still do it).  If she knows that there was a kennel on-site, she could have dropped it off.

If the dog is for emotional support, why in the hell is she at Six Flags anyway?!

So she can leave it in a hot car again to die ? This is why horrible things keep happening to animals. She should not have this dog back or any pet ever again and she needs to be charged with abuse. The justice system sucks for humans but it really sucks for poor animals.

Lock her in a sweltering hot car….but be sure and give her a little food, water, and crack the window…this lady needed to be prescribed something alright…hope she doesn’t plan on having kids.

What part of DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR does this idiot doesnt understand?? I cant believe she could make the stupid comments she did. I didnt think I was putting her in any danger. I thought she would be ok. Is this idiot living in a dream world or something?? I’ve never heard of a doctor prescribing a dog for your emotional state.  She just needs some serious therapy. It doesnt sound like she is stable enough to own a dog. If she doesnt realize she is putting the dog in danger, then she certainly doesnt deserve to have a dog. Stupid, stupid stupid. That dog is in danger as long as that woman has her. She needs to be rescued from the owner! Is she an airhead or something. To not realize the danger of what she did, she needs a major reality check.

Leaving a dog inside a car is something sounds the most stupid thing you could do. Try to sit for 10 mins inside a hot car, then you can realize the mental stress the heat gives you, Its horrible. People must think wise or more dogs will die in cars!
