Dane Cook Uses Twitter To Find His Lost Dog

June 15, 2011 in Celebrity, Internet, Missing, News, Social Media

Dane Cook & Dog

When Dane Cook realized his dog was missing on Saturday, he went to the best resource available to find him: Twitter.

“West Hollywood I need your help please. My dog Beast is missing in that area,” the comedian wrote on his Twitter page, with a photo attached and email address for users to contact him if the dog was found.

Cook also called for volunteers to help him find the missing pup, and was understandably upset that Beast was nowhere to be found.

However, showing the true power of Twitter, the dog was found shortly after Cook’s pleas hit the web.

“We found Beast!!!! Thank you so so so much everyone for your help!!!! I am so happy right now!!!!!” Cook tweeted Saturday night, adding, “Beast is alive and well – thanks everyone that helped us find him.”

So at the end of the day, the roaming pup was back at home with Cook, who was overjoyed that this Twitter tale ends on a good note.

For The Person Who Has Everything, How About A $230K Dog To Protect It?

June 14, 2011 in Lifestyle News, News, Working Dogs

Protection Dogs

Don’t call her a guard dog.

When she costs $230,000, as Julia did, the preferred title is “executive protection dog”. This 3-year-old German Shepherd , who commutes by private jet between a Minnesota estate and a home in Arizona, belongs to a canine caste that combines exalted pedigree, child-friendly cuddliness and arm-lacerating ferocity.

Julia and her ilk have some of the same tracking and fighting skills as the dogs used in elite military units like Navy Seal Team 6, which took a dog on its successful raid of Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan . In fact, Julia was sold by a trainer, Harrison Prather, who used to supply dogs to Seal Team 6 and the British special forces. But then Prather switched to a more lucrative market.

“Either rich people discovered me or I discovered them — I can’t remember which happened first,” he said.

He and others in the high-end dog training business say prices have shot up thanks to the growing number of wealthy people around the world who like the security — and status — provided by a dog with the right credentials . Moguls and celebrities now routinely pay $40,000 to $60,000 for a well-bred German Shepherd that is certified as an expert in the sport of Schutzhund, which means “protection dog” . The price can go much higher if a dog does well at an international championship, as Julia did.

A mere bag of shells for the person who can well afford it.

Massachusetts Pet Owner Says Disabled Dog’s Wheelchair Was Stolen

June 13, 2011 in Dog Safety, Inhumane Practices, Legal News, Lifestyle News, News, Tragedy

Lucky in his wheelchair

Lucky in his wheelchair.

It doesn’t get more heartless than this.

Someone appears to have stolen a wheelchair from a disabled dog in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The dog’s owner, Dave Feeney said that on Sunday someone took the device that helps his 12-year-old Belgian Shepherd “Lucky” get around. Lucky was reportedly left without the use of his hind legs after being hit by a car a few years ago.

Feeney says that the chair disappeared from his front yard. He also said that it wasn’t trash day and that it was “obvious” that the device was meant for a disabled dog.

“For somebody to do this, they knew what they were doing,” Feeney says.

Police say they’re looking into the incident.

Thankfully however, Lucky’s story does have a happy ending thanks to a New Hampshire-based company.

HandicappedPets.com has donated a new adjustable chair to Lucky that costs between $400 and $500.

Spokeswoman Lisa-Marie Mulkern says the company wanted to do anything it could “to right a wrong.”

24 Year Old Dog Smokey, Is Remembered By His Family

June 13, 2011 in In Remembrance, Lifestyle News, News

Smokey passes away at age 24

We may never know if he was the oldest dog in the world, but he sure was loved and appreciated.

Dog owner Harry Williams Jr. had to put his buddy, Smokey, to sleep May 31. When Smokey’s quality of life took a turn for the worse, Williams said he had no choice but to put him down.

Still, there’s reason to rejoice.

Smokey lived to be 24 years old — that’s 168 in human years.

Williams scooped the Labrador-Chow-Rhodesian Ridgeback mutt off the side of the highway back in 1987 in rural North Carolina. Williams said he tried to give the dog away but no one would take him.

Little did he know they’d be stuck together for more than two decades.

There’s a chance Smokey could be the oldest living dog, but because he was a stray, there is no birth certificate to back up his age. The Guinness Book of World Records requires such proof.

The oldest dog in history lived to be 29.
