The Death of Trouble, Helmsley’s $12 Million Dog, Kept Secret

June 27, 2011 in In Remembrance, Lifestyle News, News

Trouble Dog

There’s pampered and then there was $12 million Trouble pampered

That was the amount left to Trouble, Leona Helmsley’s pampered Maltese when the billionaire real estate tycoon passed away back in 2008.  And now it seems Trouble has moved on to the great beyond to be with her mistress. The 12 year old (that’s around 84 in dog years) Helmsley heiress passed away back in December (though the world only learned of it this month).

No reason was given as to why the information was kept secret until now.

Whatever the reason however, trouble began for Trouble almost immediately when news of her lofty inheritance spread. The pooch received continuing death threats from people angry that such a sum be allotted toward the maintenance of a dog. Family members refused to act as her guardian for Leona’s “bitey’ dog. Two of her grandchildren whom she cut out of her will sued, arguing that their grandmother wasn’t of sound mind when she signed the document. A judge agreed and cut the inheritance down to a paltry $2,000,000. However, even on such a hardship allowance, Trouble continued to live a life of ease until her recent death.

One thing however, it goes to show that money isn’t the answer to everything. Leona’s will also stipulated that Trouble should be buried alongside her upon her death in the Helmsley family’s 12,000-square-foot mausoleum, but the super exclusive Sleepy Hollow Cemetery rules forbid animal burial. Trouble was cremated instead.

Hopefully though, Trouble’s urn wasn’t placed in the care of one of the disinherited grandkids.

Hugh Hefner’s Ex Keeps Ring, Gives Dog Back

June 24, 2011 in Celebrity, Lifestyle News, News

hugh hefner dog charlieNewly-single Crystal Harris has given ex-fiancé Hugh Hefner the dog he gave her as a gift.

The blonde beauty called off her engagement to Hefner June 14 and packed up the pooch and moved out of the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, where she was set to become the publisher’s wife last Saturday.

But Harris has since paid a visit to her ex and brought along the Cavalier King Charles, Charlie, who called the Mansion home.

As a kind gesture, Harris handed over her beloved pup to Hefner, who had become close to the pet.

Hef took to his Twitter account with the happy news and wrote, “Crystal brought Charlie back because she thinks he’s happier here. I appreciate it, because I really missed him.”

Harris has kept the engagement ring Hefner gave her when he proposed on Christmas Day, although she recently said she’d hand the sparkler back if her ex asked for her to return it.

Former Michael Vick Dog Is Now Pit Bull Ambassador

June 24, 2011 in Celebrity, Inspirational, News, Pit Bull

Hector in PittsburghHe’s one of the lucky ones. Where he once faced life as one of  Michael Vick’s fighting dogs, Hector is now a proud Pit Bull ambassador representing all that is good and sweet about this misunderstood breed.

Hector, who was adopted by  Roo and Clara Yori of Minnesota, recently paid a visit to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Hello Bully and the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society organized a day of events in honor of Hector. The day included raffles, items for purchase, and dinner at a local restaurant where 10 percent of diners’ checks was donated to Hello Bully and the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society.

Hundreds of people came out to meet Hector and have their picture taken with him. People young and old, posed, hugged and in some cases, even gave Hector a well-deserved kiss.

The goal of Hector’s visit was to help promote positive Pit Bull perceptions instead of the negative stereotypes that are so commonly portrayed in the media.

The Yoris, who were already the proud parents of another famous Pit Bull Terrier, Wallace, the national K9 flying disc champion plus four other dogs, couldn’t resist the opportunity to adopt Hector. Once he was slowly integrated into their family, it was obvious that it was to be the start of a wonderful new life for this once misunderstood dog.

Along with being a canine ambassador, Hector is also a certified therapy dog who has passed his Canine Good Citizen test several times.

Did You Hear The One About Jerusalem Sentencing A Dog To Death By Stoning?

June 23, 2011 in Lifestyle News, News

Talk about a doggie tale!

This story has it all. Religious zealots! Animal rights activists! Blood libel! Children! Ingredients that tend to nourish the more primitive regions of our minds. Best of all, it runs under 200 words and stars a dog.

The story’s only deficiency however, is that none of it is true.

Here’s what REALLY happened: A dog walked into a Jerusalem courtroom, and someone called the dogcatcher. THE END.

Here’s how the BBC reported it: A pooch made its way into a rabbinical court in Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim. One of the judges, believing the dog to be the reincarnation of a now-deceased lawyer whom the court had cursed some two decades earlier, sentenced the dog to death by stoning, and ordered that the sentence be carried out by children. The dog escaped before the sentence could be carried out. Dog-lovers have filed a complaint against the court.

As it turns out, the BBC, along with Agence France Presse, Time Magazine, and a handful other news outlets got the story from Ynet, the website for Yediot Ahronot, Israel’s second-largest newspaper. Ynet’s story says that the head of the court denied that such an incident had taken place, a detail that was left out of the original BBC, Time, and AFP stories. The paper is also alone in noting that there was no official ruling, just a rabbi telling kids to throw rocks at a dog.

Ynet didn’t do any original reporting. They got the story from Behadrei Hadarim, a small Hebrew-language news outlet for Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community. The Bhadrei Hadarim’s reports that it got the story from someone who was present, but it doesn’t bother to give that person’s name.

Israel’s third-largest paper, which doesn’t have an English edition, also ran the story. They subsequently ran an apology, noting what the court said actually happened: A dog walked into a courtroom, and someone called the dogcatcher.

No one really knows how the reality got so blown out of proportion and how so many “reliable” news sources ran with it. What we do know however, is that dogs have enough problems without being dragged through the mud.

World’s First Dog With Four Prosthetic Paws

June 23, 2011 in Health & Science News, Inspirational, News

Bionic Dog

Talk about the Six Million Dollar Man!

Naki’o is the world’s first dog to be fitted with a complete set of four prosthetic paws.

Naki’o was barely 5 weeks old when he and his siblings were abandoned by a family fleeing their foreclosed Nebraska home.

Having barely survived the Nebraskan winter, all four of Naki’o’s paws were deformed into rounded stumps after being stuck in an icy puddle.

After being rescued, veterinary technician Christie Tomlinson “organized a fundraiser to pay for Naki’o to have his two back legs fitted with prosthetics.”

Naki’o took to the prosthetics so enthusiastically, that Orthopets decided to complete the process free of charge. It was the first time they fitted an animal with a complete set of new legs.

Now, Naki’o is able to run, jump and play just like other dogs, thanks to the second chance his new set of legs have given him.
