Heroic Oregon Dog Finally Gets A Forever Home Thanks To Facebook

April 19, 2011 in Dog Rescue, Heroics, Internet, News

Heroic Nala

Nala, on the left, with her new family.

Nala finally got what every dog deserves…a forever home with someone who truly loves her. And no dog deserves it more than her.

Nala, a Pit Bull-Labrador mix from Powell Butte, Oregon, who became a hero after saving a blind Cocker Spaniel from freezing to death in a ditch one snowy day in December, has been officially adopted by Janet Roberts, 63. And it was all done thanks to the power of social media.

After news of Nala’s heroism became known back in December, the Humane Society of Oregon thought the pooch had a good chance at being adopted. Unfortunately however, they were unable to find the right fit for the dog, who did have some behavioral issues.

A week ago, the Humane Society of Oregon decided to get Nala more publicity and created a Facebook page telling her story.

With more than 600 Facebook ‘likes,’ the page was populated with posts from people all over the country rooting for Nala to find a home. The dog even had fans in Finland and Canada. Though the page did a lot to publicize Nala’s search for a home, nothing came of it after a week.

Enter Roberts, who when she first heard about Nala’s story back in December, said she couldn’t stop thinking about her. When she saw on Facebook that the dog was still without a home, Roberts contacted the shelter and decided to have a test run with Nala out on her 80-acre property. Because Roberts and her husband have four cats, two horses and an older dog, she wanted to make sure Nala fit in with the other animals before committing to adoption. So the dog spent a night at the Roberts’ home Tuesday evening.

Said Roberts of the sleepover: “She was ever so sweet, and fit in really well. She was so respectful of everyone here.”

And while everyone at the shelter is overjoyed at Nala’s adoption, for some, the feeling is bittersweet.

“I’m really happy. This is what I’ve worked for, for so long,” said Alan Borland, Nala’s walker for the past eight months. “But I’ve been emotional and sad about it, too. It’s going to be tough to say goodbye.”

Borland, who was walking Nala when she saved the Cocker Spaniel, has become close to the dog. Borland says he won’t visit Nala, even though the couple has invited him.

“I’m gonna let her go now,” said Borland. “She needs to get on with her life, and forget about the year she spent at the shelter.”

“Eleven years in the Army, he’s got a lot of friends all over the world, but Drew is his best friend.”

So says the mother of Staff. Sgt. John Mathatas of Brunswick, Ohio whose beloved 8-year-old Miniature Dachshund Drew went missing after they let the dog outside of their home on March 12 and he never came back.

Mathatas’ parents were watching Drew while their son was in Kuwait.

Marta Mathatas said a couple from Parma, Ohio had found Drew, who had been by Mathatas’ side through several deployments and even divorce, while they were out driving and had been taking care of the dog ever since. When they saw an article about the missing pooch, they called Brunswick, Ohio police. The dog was returned to the Mathatas family early Friday evening.

Sgt. Mathatas returned from duty on March 19 and on Friday, he was finally reunited with his beloved Drew.

Compromise Reached In Missouri Prop B Puppy Mill Legislation

April 19, 2011 in Government, Legal News, News

In a move that could put an end to the bitter war over Proposition B, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced today that he had brokered a “Missouri solution” that will protect dogs as well as agricultural interests.

The agreement, signed by key groups on both sides, incorporates parts of the dog-breeding initiative passed by state voters last November and parts of a bill rewriting Proposition B, passed last week by the Legislature and awaiting action by Nixon.

For example, the agreement would require larger cages with outdoor runs for breeding dogs, as Proposition B sought, but it would give breeders time to meet the new housing standards.

Also, it would remove the Proposition B provision that limited breeders to no more than 50 breeding dogs. But it would retain the requirement for annual hands-on exams of each dog by veterinarians, as well as treatment of any serious illnesses.

The agreement still needs approval by the Legislature before the mandatory May 13 adjournment of the legislative session.

“People with good minds and good will have come together to develop a Missouri solution to this Missouri issue, and together we have made significant progress,” Nixon said.

“I look forward to continuing to work with these leaders as we move this proposal through the legislative process as swiftly and efficiently as possible.”

The agreement was signed by: Kathy Warnick of the Humane Society of Missouri; Karen Strange of the Missouri Federation of Animal Owners; Bob Baker of the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation; Barbara York of the Missouri Pet Breeders Association; Jon Hagler of the Missouri Department of Agriculture; and Don Nikodim, representing a group called Missouri Farmers Care.

According to the governor’s press secretary, key legislators who sponsored rollbacks of Proposition B are on board as well. Rep. Tom Loehner, R-Koelztown, called it “a win all-around.”

The Dog Files wishes D.J. Rodrian a quick and happy reunion with his best friend, Titus.

If this story doesn’t speak to the bond between a man and his best friend then nothing else will.

D.J. Rodrian from Milwaukee, Wisconsin is literally camped outside his former home, hoping his lost dog will return. Rodrian said his 8-year-old dog, Titus, escaped from a dog sitter’s house on April 1.

That same day, Titus was spotted outside his master’s former home.

Unfortunately, Rodrian and his family moved out of that home last July.

Rodrian has set up “Camp Titus” near his old home, spending his nights in a tent in the hopes that Titus will return.

“He has been seen here, overnight, prior to me setting up this tent,” Rodrian said. He believes Titus is now is survival mode, and would likely run away if approached.

Rodrian is posting updates to the internet during his search. You can follow his blog by clicking here.

Dog Found Riding Long Island Rail Road Reunited With Owner

April 17, 2011 in Animal Control, Inspirational, Missing, News

Long Island Rail Road

He freaked out after hearing a loud clap of thunder and then bolted into the nearest escape route…the Long Island Rail Road.

That’s what happened on Tuesday night to a dog that lives about 500 yards from the Long Island New York Rail Road

MTA police officers found the yellow Lab mix when the train stopped in Farmingdale, New York. According to riders the dog had gotten on two stops earlier in Wyandanch, New York.

“Hobo,” the name they affectionately gave the 85-pound dog, probably bolted during the thunderstorm, authorities concluded.

“There must have been a huge clap of thunder and he just bolted. A lot of dogs get frightened with the thunder,” Pat Rosen of Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview, New York said. Hobo was brought to LIVS after he was found, and immediately stole the hearts of the staff.

“He’s a very friendly and affectionate dog who loves to be pet and give kisses,” Rosen said. “Everybody here fell in love with him

Hobo and his owners were reunited on Thursday, the same day the dog was taken to the shelter.

A Chicago firefighter is The Dog Files’ latest hero after she brought not one, but two dogs back to life using CPR.

Chicago Fire Dept. firefighter Tammy Rodriguez responded to a fire on the back porch of a home Friday afternoon and pulled two dogs from the blaze — an adult dog and a puppy, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

“She rescued two dogs, performed CPR on them and brought both of them back to life,” Knight said.

The dog was doing well Friday night, but the puppy was being monitored overnight at an animal hospital, he said.

The fire had spread to the rear porch of a neighboring home and damaged some of the interior of the buildings, but the damage was not extensive, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. No one else was injured in the blaze.
