Missouri State Senate Overturns Puppy Mill Vote; Issue Goes To Governor

Puppy Mill

It’s a blow to Missouri dog lovers and voters.

The Missouri House this afternoon passed by a margin of 85 to 71 a bill that would overturn many of the regulations for dog breeders that state voters approved last year.

A similar bill, SB113, passed the Senate earlier this year. The legislation gets rid of the limits that were to be put in place this August following the close passage in November of the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. The new bill would strip provisions of the prevention act that limited dog breeders to owning no more than 50 breeding animals and required that the canines have ample room to move in their cages.

Now organizers of the November ballot issue say they’ll coordinate another petition drive should Governor Jay Nixon sign the law.

“The House decided to defy the will of the voters and dismantle Proposition B piece by piece, dealing a blow to dogs suffering in substandard facilities and also to the democratic process in Missouri,” said Barbara Schmitz of Missourians for the Protection of Dogs in a statement today.

“Not only did some lawmakers choose to overturn a statewide vote, but some of them even voted against their districts. It is now up to Governor Jay Nixon to stop this assault on voting rights. If the repeal bill is enacted, we are prepared to immediately begin gathering signatures for a referendum to bring this issue back to Missouri voters and allow the people to have the final say.”

This is nothing less than a travesty and a crime in and of itself. How does this type of thing happen? Wait, is there a lobbyist in place where there’s more money to be had or offered to the governing party that would have the power to help save the animals? Let’s take this one step further – how about the people who adopt these puppy mill dogs? Once they’re bitten, attacked, etc., where will these people be then? Further, if it was one of their family members suffering the attack, what would their position be then? This is absolutely appaling!

Sorry, in my angst, I worded it wrong. Who is there to save the animals and put these puppy mills out of commission permanently? These same animals may, due to the way they were treated, once adopted, are a threat to owners, children, etc. Some governing body has to save these animals, as well as prospective owners, and shut the puppy mills down once and for all. What is not clear about this????

It seems whoever pays them more, is the direction the politicians go.

Here’s a thought. Those who believe that overturning the Bill was a good thing, should be placed in a crate like these dogs are, left to wallow in their own urine and feces, starved, with no contact except the other’s that are shoved into the crate with them for a month and let them have a “taste” of what that kind of life is like.
