Free iPhone PETA App Counters Controversial ‘Dog Wars’ Game

April 29, 2011 in Endangerment, Gadgets, News

Peta iPhone App

Animal rights organization PETA has released a free iPhone app in response to the polarizing Android app “Dog Wars,” a mobile game featuring simulated dogfights.

PETA’s app promotes activism, encourages donations and awards participation with points and badges.

The app also provides users with “action alerts,” which inform users about PETA’s current petitions and campaigns. For example, the app publicizes PETA’s current campaign calling members to petition Google and ask that the Dog Wars app be removed from the Android Market.

“Dog Wars promotes felony cruelty to animals, plain and simple,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a press release. “PETA’s new app allows iPhone users to employ consumer pressure to prevent dogs from being torn to shreds in dogfights and to nip other violent acts of abuse against animals in the bud.”

Dog Wars has also been condemned by the Humane Society and other activist groups.

Democracy Dead In Missouri As Compromised Dog Breeding Measure Rushed Into Law

April 29, 2011 in Endangerment, Government, Inhumane Practices, News

3000 Puppy Mills In MissouriIf I lived in Missouri, I’m not sure if I would ever bother voting again. But that’s just me.

The hopes that Missouri’s voter approved dog breeding law, Proposition B would be reinstated, is now officially dead.

After months of debate, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon rushed a compromise bill regulating dog breeding into law on Wednesday, overturning an initiative passed by state voters in November.

The new measure wipes out most of the voter-approved law known as Proposition B. The result is a new law that repeals Proposition B’s limit of 50 breeding dogs per business but sets new standards for veterinary care and housing.

Asked what he would say to Proposition B supporters who felt their votes didn’t count, Nixon said voters had provided the impetus for the compromise.

“What I tell them is, but for the action of the public, there wouldn’t have been the force that was necessary to coalesce people to make these changes. … Their votes did matter,” he said.

The Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had hoped to trigger a referendum on the Legislature’s bill and reinstate Proposition B.

Jim Moody, who lobbies for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said, “The emergency clause was an attempt to take away constitutional rights, and it was orchestrated by the governor.”

The deal brokered by Nixon and his agriculture director, Jon Hagler, split animal welfare organizations. The two national groups that spent millions of dollars on Proposition B said the compromise fails to adequately protect dogs.

But those headquartered in Missouri — such as the Humane Society of Missouri and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation — supported the compromise.

In the end however, many Missouri legislators said they just wanted to put the issue to rest. And all the talk about Missouri’s status as the “puppy mill” capital of the country had engendered stronger reactions from constituents than any other issue they had encountered.

“In all my eight years here, I’ve never seen one passionate, contentious issue such as this,” said Missouri Rep. Tim Meadows.

Humane Society Says Dog Beating By DreamWorks Animator Caught On Tape Worst In Pasadena History

April 29, 2011 in Inhumane Practices, News

UPDATE: The accused dog beater has been identified as an animator for DreamWorks, having worked on animal-themed films including “Kung Fu Panda,” “Shark Tale,” “Bee Movie” and “Madagascar 2″.

UPDATE 2: Prosecutors now claim after he killed the dog, he carried off its body.

The abuse of an animal never makes any sense. This particular abuse case however, makes the least sense of all.

In what local Humane Society officers called the worst case of animal abuse they’ve ever seen, a 40-year-old Pasadena, California man was booked Wednesday on suspicion of repeatedly beating a muzzled German Shepherd while it was leashed to a fence.

Young Song was arrested at his home on suspicion of felony animal cruelty in connection with the brutal attack on the 14-month-old dog, which was caught on videotape.

Song is being held on $40,000 bail at the Pasadena City Jail.

The beating was captured by a security camera the dog’s owner mounted outside his home, said Ricky Whitman, Pasadena California Humane Society spokeswoman,.

“When our officers first viewed the videotape, one of our officers had tears in his eyes. He’d never seen anything like this before,” said Steve McNall, who heads the Pasadena Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “In my 31 years at this animal shelter I’ve never seen anything like this.”

In the video, the suspect is seen scaling the back of his neighbor’s home in Pasadena, California on April 20, shooting the Shepherd with a pellet gun and beating it while it was leashed to a fence and muzzled, according to Whitman’s description.

It was unclear what type of weapon was used to beat the animal, she said.

The dog went missing after the attack, Whitman said.

“It’s a strong possibility that he killed the animal, and we have strong evidence that he knows about the whereabouts of the dog,” she said. “It looks like he did something with the severely beaten animal, but we don’t know where the dog is. We hope to find out soon.”

Pasadena, California police and Humane Society officers served a search warrant Wednesday at Song’s home.

“We found evidence, strong evidence, related to the case. But we are still investigating and do not want to release information on what was found in the house,” said Lt. Nemesio Arteaga of the Humane Society.

One of Song’s neighbors was “shocked” by Song’s arrest, saying he is a husband and a father.

“He’s a very nice and kind person,” said Paul Lofthouse, who lives directly across the street from Song. “He must have snapped. He has three dogs of his own and chickens in the backyard. It’s a total surprise.”
