Swiss Search Dogs Rescue Efforts Delayed By Japanese Bureaucracy

March 15, 2011 in Government, Heroics, News, Working Dogs, World

Swiss Rescue Team Dog

A dog of a Swiss rescue team lies on the ground during a briefing before departing for Japan, at the Swiss Air Rescue base in Kloten, March 12, 2011.

They’re ready, willing and able to help. Yet due to strict Japanese rules on importing animals, the Swiss Canine Rescue team have found themselves being frustratingly delayed in getting to do the job they came for: finding survivors from Friday’s devastating earthquake.

Dressed in orange reflective jumpsuits, the 25-member Swiss search team, which includes nine highly trained search dogs, were the first canine rescue teams to arrive in Japan only to find their efforts stifled by Japan’s strict rules for dogs entering the country.

“There are many rules here. So it’s taking a long time,” a member of the Swiss team said Sunday moments after an aftershock rolled through the airport.

The group’s search dogs are trained to find living people, sometimes buried dozens of feet beneath debris.

Though made famous by training St. Bernards to search for lost people in the Alps, the breeds the Swiss rescuers took along to Japan included Retrievers, Australian Collies and Border Collies

“Our job is to look for living people,” a team member said.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials are currently working with the Japanese to expedite approval of dog teams from Virginia and California now on their way to Japan to avoid similar bureaucratic snafus.

The 150 American rescuers and their 12 dogs trained to find survivors will arrive in Japan today.

Japanese Dog Keeps Vigil Over Injured Friend

March 15, 2011 in Endangerment, Heroics, Inspirational, News, Tragedy, World

No one knows the story behind these two dogs. No one knows if they were rescued.

But what is clear is the loyalty and love between these dogs.

Take a look, World, at what it means to be true to a friend or loved one in need.

Once again, it takes a dog to show us the way.

Not sure about you, but it truly humbles me.

– Kenn

P.S. If anyone can translate it, email it to us at japanesedogs

UPDATE: We have gotten word that both dogs have been rescued! The healthier one is safe at a shelter and the injured one is being taken care of at a Vet Hospital.

Here is the translation of what they are saying:

[intro text: Then, our news team comes across something in the disaster area-]

“We’re now in Arahama– oh! a dog!

A dog has been… it must’ve been struck by the tsunami.

It’s totally black with filth.

It’s wearing a collar, so it must be a pet dog.

It seems a little scared, kinda scared…

[text: It must have gotten lost. And then-]

Oh, another dog! Is it dead…?

quietly: “where?” “over there…” “ah, yeah, dead…”

There’s another dog over there, next to where the first dog is
sitting, but it’s not really moving.

Think it’s dead…

It’s guarding it!

Yeah, guarding…

Because we got close to it, now it’s saying “don’t you come closer”, maybe.

Aw, I just can’t watch…

[text: And then-]

Ah, it’s moving! Hurrah, it moved, it moved!

It’s alive! Great, it’s alive.

But it looks really weak…

I hope someone comes to rescue it soon.

Ah, it got up, it got up! Hurrah…

We made it safely through such a tremendous earthquake… such a
terrible earthquake and a tsunami, and we survived it! That’s how
these dogs must be feeling.

Scottish Dog Lover Fights Off Knife-Wielding Thugs Who Tried To Steal His Puppies

It was a fight to the finish and Richie Gaston wasn’t about to give up.

Gaston was walking his beloved Boxer puppies, 10-week old Rascal and Bruno in his Scotland neighborhood on March 1, when he suddenly felt his lead get lighter.

“I took Bruno and Rascal down to the riverbank so they could do the toilet. That’s when I noticed my lead had suddenly got lighter and I turned round to see a guy lifting up Rascal, trying to free him. I shouted at the guy to stop then I decked him.”

That’s when Gaston was confronted by another thug who tried to grab Bruno.

Gaston managed to deck the second man before a third appeared brandishing a knife.

Without thinking, Gaston kicked the knife out of the dognapper’s hand but then “I slipped and he started booting me on the head“, Gaston explained.

“I pulled the dogs towards me as they were terrified but then I flipped.”

Gaston said he then jumped to his feet, “grabbed the guy and threw him head first over a fence. They all ran away.”

Gaston said he phoned the police but wasn’t able to give them a good description of his attackers.

He also said his garden shed had been broken into several days before the incident which leads him to believe that that incident is somehow linked to the attempted dognapping.

“There’s no doubt the pups were targeted,” Gaston said. “They’re worth about £500 each and I’ve no doubt the thieves were after them.”

A spokesman for Scotland Northern Constabulary said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact police. Our inquiries are ongoing.”

Great Pyrenees Guard Dogs Keep Predators Out of Texas Zoo

Texas Zoo Guard Dogs

Sarge and Jazz, a brother and sister pair of Great Pyrenees, the Victoria, Texas zoo.

The guinea hens and peacocks can all sleep soundly tonight now that Sarge and Jazz are on the job.

Sarge and Jazz, a brother and sister pair of Great Pyrenees, are the newest additions to the Victoria, Texas zoo. And no, they’re not part of a new canine exhibit. They’re the zoo’s security dogs.

“They guard the zoo not from people coming, but they guard the animals from natural predators,” said Andrea Blomberg, zoo executive director. “It’s our job to keep the animals safe.”

The zoo’s location in the middle of Riverside Park, Texas left some animals vulnerable to attacks from snakes, bobcats and raccoons.

So taking a cue from the Austin, Texas Zoo, who started the trend, the decision was made to acquire guard dogs. But zoo staff knew they couldn’t bring any type of dog into the zoo.

“We needed dogs that knew not to attack the animals that were supposed to be here and guard them,” said Blomberg.

After much research, zoo staff decided upon Great Pyrenees, who sleep all day, are bred and raised to guard livestock, and who also have an excellent demeanor around humans.

So not long after getting in contact with the Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue, Blomberg learned about 100-pound Sarge and 70-pound Jazz.

The furry, white siblings had been living on an Austin, Texas Ranch where they guarded turkeys.

Sarge and Jazz, who will be 2 years old in May, arrived at the zoo on Feb. 22.
Their training consisted of learning their patrol routes as well as familiarizing themselves with the zoo’s inhabitants.

And as cute as they are however, the dogs will most likely not be seen by the general zoo public, as they sleep in the administrative building during the day and work after the zoo is closed to the public.

14 Pit Bulls Saved From Fiery Bronx Apartment

On Monday afternoon, firefighters responding to an apartment fire in the Bronx, New York, got quite a surprise when they broke into the apartment and found 14 pit bulls that had been injured by smoke and fire.

After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters, as well as an official from the nonprofit group Animal Care and Control of New York City, carried all 14 pit bulls, including several palm-sized puppies, out to a rescue vehicle. Several of the dogs had cuts, and some seemed emaciated. Some of the dogs were given oxygen masks by firefighters on the street.

One of the firefighters stated that when they first broke into the apartment, the dogs were fighting so they were sprayed with a chemical extinguisher in order to break them up.

It was unclear if the animals’ condition warranted criminal charges. Richard Gentles, a spokesman for Animal Care and Control, said the group had not yet decided what action to take since officials had yet to reach the owner or fully evaluate the dogs’ medical condition.

Several neighbors however, said they believed that the owner was breeding dogs in order to sell them.

“I called the A.S.P.C.A. and 311 and nobody did nothing,” said Humberto Portuondo, 50, a truck driver who lives underneath Apartment 6J where the fire occurred and whose own apartment was partly flooded by water dripping through the ceiling. “I could hear them day and night, fighting and barking and running around. The smell is very strong.”

Another neighbor, Adonis Rodriguez, 18, said the dog owner treated the animals well, and got along with most neighbors.

“He was breeding them, not fighting them,” he said, standing on the sixth floor, next to the burned-out apartment.

But Rolando Arencieba, 25, a pit bull owner who lives two blocks away, disagreed. “I saw them giving the dogs oxygen,” he said. “You could see their spines and ribs — they had no stomachs.”
