Actor Ryan Phillippe Adopts Shelter Dog

March 18, 2011 in Adoption News, Celebrity, Dog Rescue, News

Ryan Phillippes son Deacon with shelter dog

I wish more people in the media spotlight would adopt shelter dogs like Ryan Phillippe just did. Though, I still wouldn’t ever want anyone to use the word, “spontaneously” next to “adopted a dog”, it sure seems like Ryan’s heart was is the right place.

While I wish famous people like the Obama’s or Mark Zuckerberg would have adopted instead of buying, I’ll take the small victories when we get them!

– Kenn

Ryan Phillippe’s seven-year old son Deacon was feeling a little down last weekend so Phillippe decided to give his son the best gift possible to cheer him up: a shelter dog!

As Phillippe, who’s also father to 11-year old Ava, told Jimmy Kimmel, Deacon has been a walking disaster this past school year, coming home from school almost everyday with assorted broken bones and currently “a busted lip. It’s the fattest lip ever.”

Phillippe, 36, who shares custody of the children with ex-wife actress Reese Witherspoon, noticed that Deacon’s “been kind of down this weekend, so spontaneously, we adopted a dog. We went to a rescue in downtown L.A. Here’s him looking happier.”

Phillippe then showed Kimmel a photo of his son hugging and lying on a black dog.

So three cheers, for Ryan Phillippe, a great dad and a great shelter dog advocate!

Search Dog Foundation Dogs Begin Work In Japan

March 18, 2011 in News, Tragedy, Uncategorized, Working Dogs, World

The Search Dog Foundation based in Ojai, California sent a dozen teams from around the country to Japan.

The team that flew on a chartered plane to a US Navy Base in Japan and then drove six hours to get to the most devastated areas.

Some of the dogs are credited with finding people buried alive in Haiti.

They hope to find survivors in Japan too but this time they have to take extra safety precautions because of the nuclear crisis.

Debra Tosch the Executive Director of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, says every team that goes out has an individual monitor measuring radiation levels so they know where to go and where not to go.

They dogs will keep searching as long as there is a chance they can find people still alive in the debris.

Aurora, Colorado Considers Relaxing Pit Bull Ban

Service Pit Bull

It’s time for these towns across America that ban Pit Bulls to stop these ridiculous laws and join us in the 21st century.

What do you think?

– Kenn

Her name is Precious and she is disabled combat Marine Allen Grider’s therapy pet who helps him cope with his post-traumatic stress disorder. But in November 2009, Precious was seized from Grider’s Aurora, Colorado home.

Why? Because she is a Pit Bull Mix and since 2006, the city of Aurora has banned pit bulls and several other dog breeds.

But now, thanks to new federal rules that just took effect that allow any dog breed to be used as trained service dogs, Precious may not be banned anymore.

The updated regulations for the Americans With Disabilities Act, which says that all dogs that receive individual training can be service dogs, have Aurora, Colorado city officials re-examining the issue.

On Thursday, an Aurora City Council committee will discuss several variations to the current ban. They include doing away with the ban or keeping the ban but allowing pit bulls as service dogs.

There are opponents to these proposed changes, however.

“The pit bull ban is something my constituents support,” Aurora City Councilwoman Molly Markert said. “They are happy it’s in place.”

As for Precious however, she was eventually returned to Grider after he was forced to keep the dog at a friend’s home in another city for more than five months.

Grider, who is a Vietnam veteran, said he is now suing the city of Aurora for taking Precious away from him.

Philadelphia Man Gets 2-7 Years For Lighting Puppy On Fire

March 17, 2011 in Endangerment, Inhumane Practices, Legal News, News, Tragedy

I’ve kept these kind of posts to a minimum, but I still feel a responsibility, every so often, to remind the public-at-large that these kind of abuses and atrocities are still happening and it could be happening right around you.

While some will definitely argue that this guy deserves more hard time, I have to remind you that many of these abusive people still get no time in jail. At least this dangerous man will serve a few years and miss out on his children’s lives.

Speaking of his children, I’m really glad they did the right thing. Who knows if their father would have turned on them next.

– Kenn

It‘s an act almost too horrible to mention.

Angry that his 5-month old mixed-breed puppy bit his 12-year son, John William Fleet III made his son and 13-year old daughter hold the dog while he set it on fire and later offered the children money if they kept quiet about the incident.

Thankfully, the children disobeyed their father telling a school counselor about the January 28 incident.

On Friday afternoon, after two days after jury selection, Fleet, 34, finally pleaded guilty and was sentenced immediately to 2 to 7 years in prison by Judge Charles J. Cunningham III.
.
Fleet came near to pleading guilty several times over the course of jury selection but always backed out. Even early Friday, Fleet balked in mid-plea, breaking down in tears when he learned the sentence included an order barring contact with his children throughout his sentence and for seven years probation when he gets out of prison.

After a two-hour break however, Fleet returned, resigned, and told Cunningham, “I’ll stay away forever. It’s fine. Not a problem.”

Fleet blamed the incident on stress involving the breakup of his marriage, an ongoing custody fight and a day of heavy drinking.

“I took it out on the dog,” said Fleet, who originally told police that the dog had been burned accidentally.

Assistant District Attorney Erin O’Brien said the dog survived with minor facial scarring and is now with a foster family which is planning to adopt the animal.

How Much Would It Cost To Buy The Most Expensive Dog In The World?

March 17, 2011 in Breed, Celebrity, Lifestyle News, News, Show Dogs

Red Tibetan Mastiff

This is one pricey, but beautiful doggie!

The Red Tibetan Mastiff Is The Most Expensive Dog In The World.

His breed has been owned by such luminaries as Queen Victoria, King George IV and Genghis Khan – who supposedly took 30,000 of the dogs with his army in his bid to conquer Western Europe.

This guy;s name is Big Splash, a Red Tibetan Mastiff and thanks to a coal baron from the north of China, he is now the most expensive dog in the world.

Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was purchased for a whopping 10 million Chinese yuan, or over 1.5 Million Dollars. Or to be exact, $1,525,595.00.

And it’s lucky his new master is a multi-millionaire, because the hefty price tag doesn’t factor in Big Splash’s diet – enough chicken and beef spiced up with Chinese delicacies such as sea cucumber and abalone to fill a growing 180lb dog.

His owner will also need a big house as adult Tibetan Mastiffs have been known to weigh as much as 286lb, or more than 20 stone – the same as a sizeable rugby player. However the typical weight for a fully grown Tibetan Mastiff is around 13 stone.

But according to breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash is a ‘perfect specimen’ and the extravagant price for the 11-month-old is completely justified
?He said: ‘We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay’ – adding that the new owner could charge almost £10,000 a time for Big Splash to breed with a female.

The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewelry and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth.

Not only is red considered a lucky color, but Tibetan mastiffs are thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners’ health and security.

Tibetans also believe the dogs have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into Shambhala, the heavenly realm.

Currently, there are only around 300 Tibetan mastiffs in the UK.

Owner Of Electrocuted Dog, Files $60K Claim Against Seattle

March 15, 2011 in Dog Safety, Endangerment, Legal News, News, Tragedy

Seattle Skyline

It was a tragedy that haunts her to this day.

Lisa McKibbin was walking her beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Sammy last Thanksgiving Day in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, Washington when Sammy stepped on a streetlight metal ground-cover plate and instantly died after being electrocuted.

McKibbin, who purchased the 68-pound dog for $200 in 2004, has now filed $60,000 claim against the city of Seattle.

In the 17-page claim filed Friday, Adam Karp, the animal law attorney representing
McKibbin and her mother, Nancy Bostdorff, said his clients would settle for $30,000 under three conditions: that the City Light electric company post contact-voltage safety tips on its website, take part in an annual contact-voltage safety conference and make contact-voltage scans annual rather than every four years.

Suzanne Hartman, spokeswoman for City Light, said, “Of course, we’ll take a look at the claim and certainly review it. We’ll then do the normal processing to determine the reasonableness.”

In the claim, Karp said that ever since Sammy was purchased in 2004, the daughter and mother had spent over $10,000 on the dog, with the big-ticket items being $5,212 for “doggy day care,” $2,400 on vet bills over the six years of his life and $1,339 for emergency treatment and cremation after the dog was electrocuted.

The claim goes on to say that Sammy “did not have a fair market or replacement value,” but “a unique value.”

“My clients loved Sammy as if he were their child. … The avoidable and wholly unexpected death by electrocution of Sammy caused complex grief and emotional harm to both my clients,” said the claim.

Included in the claim were photos of Sammy at a beach on Vancouver Island and with his owners on vacation in the Canadian Rockies.

The claim included postings by McKibbin on the web about Sammy shortly after his death, including, “I can’t stop sobbing and aching …You were my sweetie, my little boy.”

The claim also said McKibbin “will testify to complex grief, emotional and physical stress, haunting flashbacks replaying the witnessing of Sammy’s death, fear of herself also being killed by lethal voltage and losing him so tragically and unexpectedly.”

Karp said if no settlement is reached within 60 days, the next step is a lawsuit.
