Warning: One scene in the video is tough to watch, but it is a very important to watch and share. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away, Mayor Bing.

– Kenn Bell

Monica Martino and Dan Carlisle want you to know that there are 50,000 stray dogs roaming the streets of Detroit.

The plans were all in place for a reality show that was to air on the Discovery Channel about the stray dog problem in Detroit, Michigan.

That was however, until the Motor City’s mayor denied the producers permission to film it.

In frustration at the decision by Mayor David Bing’s film office, which supposedly occurred because Bing was opposed to the negativity the series would add to Detroit’s already tarnished image, two of the filmmakers, executive producer Monica Martino and location scout Dan Carlisle — a local rapper known as Hush, have continued the fight by posting a short but shocking video on YouTube about the problem shortly after the city’s refusal to grant the permit.

“Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored,” they quote from English intellectual Aldous Huxley’s writings at the start of the disturbing four-minute film, which shows stray dogs wandering the city and in one case resorting to a form of infanticide to survive.??

“There are 50,000 dogs running loose in the city,” narrates Carlisle. “The city doesn’t want people to know there’s a stray dog problem. But there’s a big problem.”

??The four-minute film has since drawn more than 70,000 hits and the pair claim to have received more than $7,000 in donations to their newly created animal rescue charity, Detroit Dog Rescue.?

The duo filmed the footage independently in January after learning the film office had rejected the cable network’s plans for the 10-part series, called “A Dog’s Life,” focusing on the lives of strays.??

Carlisle now urges people to donate to their nonprofit Detroit Dog Rescue and to petition Mayor Bing over the decision.

“I know that Detroit is changing and nobody wants to see their city represent a national problem,” says Martino, a well-connected producer whose TV credits include “Whale Wars” on Animal Planet and “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery. “There’s a stray dog problem in every major city in the U.S. that’s had an economic decline. I don’t believe that sweeping it under the rug is the way to go,” she adds.??

The producers say the TV series would have raised public awareness of Detroit’s strays and generated even more donations.??

Carlisle says their quest for a TV show on the issue is not finished and they plan to continue their efforts to rescue Detroit’s stray dogs.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Overturns Pit Bull Ban

March 23, 2011 in Breed-Specific Legislation, Government, News, Pit Bull

Score one for the Pit Bulls!

Jerry Stuckey, of Midwest City, Oklahoma, had been fighting for years to save his family’s Bull Terriers. This week a state supreme court ruling ends the long legal battle.

The dispute centered on a now defunct Midwest City ordinance that banned dogs with “pit” or “bull” in their names as a danger to the community. ??That included the Stuckey’s Bull Terrier dogs.

Lower courts had previously ruled the dog ban violated state law.

This week the state supreme court refused to take up the issue, which means the Midwest City ban is now officially dead.?

“It’s a huge relief,” said Stuckey of the court’s decision.?

“It was just a bad ordinance. It was unconstitutional and I’m tickled to death the Supreme Court has the common sense they have.”??

After filing suit in 2007, Stuckey’s attorney, Scott Adams always argued and lower court judges agreed, Oklahoma state law prohibits dog bans from being breed specific.??

“It was a waste of money and time. I tried to tell everyone that from day one but the city wanted to pursue it. We defended it and won,” Adams said.??

“What it has taken away is the presumption that all Pit Bulls are dangerous animals,” said Midwest City attorney Katherine Bolles.?

Bolles argued all along, the issue is much bigger than just the Stuckey’s pets; it’s about city’s being able to set their own laws.??

“It’s not about the dogs. It’s about local control,” said Bolles.??

With no more legal options, Midwest City could still lobby state lawmakers to overturn state law.??

They could also draft a new, much less restrictive ordinance.

Service Dogs-In-Training Take Field Trip To Science Center In New Jersey

Service Dog Watches Fish

On any typical day at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey there’s so much to see and do.

But on Saturday afternoon, things became even more exiting there when visitors were caught off guard by about a dozen puppies joining them in line for the Touch Tunnel.

Yet these were no typical house pets, however. The Golden Retrievers and Labs were in training to become service dogs through Canine Companions for Independence, a nationwide non-profit organization.

“Anywhere I go, he’s with me,” volunteer Pat Redden, a chemistry professor at St. Peter’s College, said of Elvis, a regular around Jersey City. “The only place off limits is my chemistry lab.”

Redden and her fellow volunteers raise and train the dogs for 16 to 18 months. Events like the trip to LSC are designed to acclimate the puppies to public settings and crowds.

“The idea is to expose them to as many things as possible because the person they are paired with might like to come to these types of places,” Redden said.

After training, if the puppies qualify for certification, they will be matched with individuals with special needs other than vision. CCI-trained dogs do not become Seeing Eye dogs.

On Saturday, the puppies explored the Touch Tunnel and checked out the huge fish tanks while their owners answered all kinds of questions from curious bystanders. A few of the puppy raisers kept information cards in the their puppies’ vests, encouraging interested people to try raising a puppy of their own.

So how did the trainees do?

The puppies, it turned out, had an easier time navigating the popular attraction than their owners did. The pitch-black maze tests visitors’ ability to navigate on all fours — something dogs do all the time — and without vision.

“At one point I bumped into the wall, and he seemed to look back at me, as if to say, ‘What’s the problem?’” Redden said with a laugh. “It was a lot of fun.”

Patrick The Miracle Dog Survives Abuse In Newark, NJ.

March 23, 2011 in Dog Rescue, Endangerment, Inhumane Practices, News

A dog that was found near death in New Jersey has been nursed back to life. The dog had barely any skin over its bones when someone tossed it down a trash chute in Newark. The lucky dog they are calling “Patrick the miracle dog” is recovering.

UPDATE:
An x-ray has revealed an obstruction in Patrick’s intestines. In light of his current state of weakness, he is unable to undergo surgery to remove whatever the obstruction is.

The Vets think it could be something he eat out of desperation while nearly starving to death.

Also, there has been an award offered. AHS/Popcorn Park is offering a $2000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for abusing Patrick.
