Kaila Reunites With Apache and Lukas Across The Rainbow Bridge

February 22, 2011 in Dog Files News, News, Tragedy, Wolves

Wolf Ambassador Kaila RIP

It is with great sadness that I bring news of the passing of Kaila, a beautiful Wolf Ambassador at the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York.

She joins Ambassador Wolves, Apache and Lukas, who both passed in 2010, on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Kaila lived a healthy, happy 15 years and was the original ambassador wolf at the Wolf Conservation Center.

This spring Kaila will join her fallen pack mates as her cremated remains will be placed in Yellowstone National Park where she will forever dwell among the wild wolves that she helped people better understand.

Please watch the Dog Files Episode below entitled, The Wolf Files, to learn about Kaila, her pack and the Wolf Conservation Center.

On a happier note, the Center will be introducing a new pack of wolf cubs to the center this Spring. We’re hoping the Dog Files will be there to document it.

The Dog Files sends our sincerest condolences to the great people that make up the Wolf Conservation Center.

Multiple Reasons Cited For Vicks’ Decision To Cancel Oprah Appearance

Just days before he was to make his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Michael Vick abruptly decided to cancel.

It now appears that there may have been multiple reasons behind Vick’s last minute decision.

A major concern for Vick may have been that Winfrey’s producers were reaching out to the current owners of Vick’s former dogs about appearing on her show.

One of those current owners is Richard Hunter, a Dallas journalist who tried to confront Vick at a pre-Super Bowl party in Dallas where the quarterback was being given a key to the city. Hunter, who wanted Vick to see a picture of the dog he adopted but was stopped by Vick’s associates, said the dog owners were aggressive in their desire to be on the show.

Don Halcombe, a spokesman for Winfrey, did confirm Thursday that families who adopted Vick’s dogs wanted to appear on the Vick/Oprah show.

“Yes, they reached out to us and we spoke with them and several other groups. We were still in planning stages for the show so can’t confirm if they would have been part of the final episode,” Halcombe said.

It also seems that plain old indecision might have made Vick change his mind.

Howard Eskin, sports host at 610 WIP, claims Vick couldn’t decide whether or not to go on the show and asked his team, the Philadelphia Eagles for advice. Apparently they told him that if he has reservations, “you can not go on with Oprah Winfrey. It’s still your call, your choice, you make a decision. But if you’re not sure of it, just tell them you can’t do it, and that’s basically what happened,” Eskin said.

Winfrey, who found out the interview was cancelled via an email from her producer, told The Hollywood Reporter that she and her producers had been “working for months” on the Vick interview, and already pre-taped segments with Vick.

The Vick show was scheduled to air on February 24.

Meanwhile, next season, Vick will be receiving an estimated $16 million to $20 million for a one-year deal with the Eagles.

The Long, Mysterious Journey Of A Dog Named Bear

February 21, 2011 in Inspirational, Missing, News

By Elaine Furst For Dog Files

How he got 715 miles away from his home, nobody knows. All Bryan Rapozo knows is that he got his beloved “Bear Bear” back.

Bear’s story started on Tuesday afternoon when he was sitting out back of Rapozo’s acoustical ceiling company in Sacramento California, looking for a squirrel that was bothering him. When Rapozo went to look for Bear, he was gone.

“I figured that was it,” Rapozo said. “I didn’t think I’d ever get him back.”

Well, fast-forward to Thursday afternoon, 715 miles away in Tacoma, Washington when an unidentified woman turned in the 20-pound Rat Terrier Mix to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, saying she found him roaming in Lakewood.

When Bear was found, he didn’t have the new collar and identification tag that Rapozo said he put on him Sunday. The tag included Rapozo’s name, cell phone number and Bear’s name.

But one thing Bear did have was a microchip.

So thanks to the microchip, the Humane Society was able to get a message to Rapozo, who has two daughters and considers Bear his son, that the dog had been found safe in Tacoma.

“It was the best news I’ve ever heard,” Rapozo said Friday.

In her 16 years at the Humane Society, Marguerite Richmond said she’s never known of a dog wandering so far.

“I think it’s extremely unusual,” Richmond said. “He didn’t walk up here. He didn’t get here by himself.”

Richmond also said the happy ending shows it’s a good idea to have your pet microchipped, which costs $25 at the Humane Society.

As for Bear, Rapozo said “he will no longer be going outside alone. He’s not going to leave my side.”
