Two Men Saved By Dog In Eastlake, California Trailer Fire

February 24, 2011 in Heroics, News

For Paul Kirschstein, his dog Coco is more than just his best friend. She is also his savior.

Early Sunday morning, Paul and his roommate were sound asleep in their Eastlake, California trailer when he got an unexpected wake up call.

“I’m a very sound sleeper,” Paul says. “[Coco] came up and nudged me on the center of the bed, in my side. All of a sudden I smelled something, and I rolled on my back to look at the room and the room was hazy, and then I heard crackling.”

Flames were crawling up the walls of Paul’s trailer, quickly turning his home into an inferno.??Paul woke his roommate then quickly grabbed Coco‘s eight tiny pups that were just born on Wednesday. Thanks to Coco’s warning, everyone made it out safely. And not a moment too soon.

?”Within 10 to 15 minutes it was gone–the trailer was gone. If it hadn’t been for her, I wouldn’t be here,” he says through tears.

As of Sunday, Paul, Coco and all eight pups were camped out in a hotel room with nothing more than some clothes and a few dollars. Everything else was destroyed in the blaze which according to the Eastlake Fire Department was electrical in nature.

But Paul is thankful for Coco and his heroic tale.

“She’s a good mommy and she loves her daddy, and I love her. I love her more than anything in the world.”

Paul, who is a truck driver and heads back to work this week, is hoping that someone will come forward and offer a foster home for Coco and her eight puppies until he can find a new home.

Wheaten Terrier Elected as President of Civic Association in Annandale, Virginia

February 24, 2011 in Government, Inspirational, News

Wheaten Terrier

Her name is Miss Beatha Lee. She’s interested in neighborhood activities, likes the outdoors and is president of the Hillbrook-Tall Oaks Civic Association in Annandale, VA. She is also a dog.

Miss Lee, a shaggy, dirty white Wheaton Terrier to be exact, is the pet of the former president, Mark Crawford, who inherited Beatha (pronounced Bee-AH-tah) in 2008 from his mother and stepfather in Maine. How she came to be president is partially a case of mistaken identity and neighborhood apathy.

Crawford, who had served three consecutive terms as president and, according to the association bylaws, could not run for the office again, became frustrated at the lack of interest of his fellow neighbors in running for the often-thankless volunteer post. Out of sheer frustration, Crawford decided to put up his dog for election.

So on voting day when Miss Lee’s name was called, the crowd of 50, though unfamiliar with Miss Lee, voted for her unanimously assuming she was a civic-minded newcomer. To celebrate, everyone ate ice cream, watched a karate demonstration and went home.

Weeks later, the news broke in the association’s newsletter with Lee’s promise to “govern with an even paw.” The dog’s photo appeared under the heading, “Dog Rules, Humans Apathetic (Pathetic).”

Crawford, who now serves as vice president under his pooch, says, “This isn’t a power trip. We wanted to send a message to the neighborhood that they needed to get involved and get engaged. That they can’t count on the same people to do this year in and year out.”

And as for Miss Lee, how she is handling her new found duties?

“Well, she delegates a lot,” Crawford said. “That’s what executives are supposed to do – delegate.”

For a dog named Boo, things got a little scary when he was taking his daily stroll and fell through a frozen Greenville, Delaware pond Friday afternoon.

Owner Maria Murowany said 13-year old Boo likes to walk around the lake regularly to visit his friends, but things turned out a little differently on Friday when she heard Boo’s distressed barks and ran out to see her son’s dog’s head poking out over the ice. A neighbor called 911.

Crews arrived and quickly formulated a plan.

Grabbing a row-boat from a neighbor, three men piled into the boat as five others remained on land.

The men used tools to break the ice so they could steer their way over to the dog that was forty feet off land.

“Going out was a little tricky,” said one rescue worker. “I could barely reach out and try not to tip boat at the same time.”

Things ended happily for Boo however, when he collapsed into the boat and was quickly bundled up with blankets.

Now home, he’s getting special attention. The Murowany’s have set up an extra heater to warm him up, plus plenty of treats, and no shortage of scratches.

Nearly-Mailed Puppy Adopted by Minneapolis Woman

February 22, 2011 in Adoption News, Endangerment, Inhumane Practices, Law Enforcement, News

Guess, the schnauzer-poodle mix puppy that made national headlines when he was nearly shipped to Georgia via the U.S. mail, got himself a happy, new home.

Terri Ford of Minneapolis was the winner in a carefully screened pool of 55 wishful adopters at the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control.

”I didn’t think I’d be coming home with him,” Ford said. “I’m totally excited. ?

Guess’ previous owner, Stacey Champion, 39, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty after officials said she tried to mail the dog in a box with no air holes, water or food via the U.S. Postal Service.

Thankfully the dog was found after the package moved unexpectedly and a postal worker heard panting inside.

??Champion said she had poked air holes in the box and also put a bottle of water inside, though none was reported found. She also admitted to telling the post workers that there was a toy robot inside of the box.

Officials said the dog most likely would not have survived the journey to Georgia.
