Delta Airlines' Dead-Dog Problem

From The Week.com

Several dogs have escaped or died (or both) while in Delta’s care over the past nine months. Is the airline being negligent with our pets?

Delta Air Lines is getting unfavorable publicity over the recent escape and subsequent death of Nala, an 8-year-old German shepherd, during a stopover at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport. But this isn’t the first time a dog has died while in Delta’s custody. At least two other dogs also met untimely ends with the airline in the past nine months alone, and several more have taken long, unnecessary detours. Does Delta have a dead-dog problem?

What happened with Nala?
On Dec. 22, Nala’s owner, Alisa Miller, put her dog on a Delta flight from San Diego to the family’s new home in Frankfurt, Germany, where Miller’s husband, an Army officer, is stationed. Nala apparently escaped from his crate during a stopover in Atlanta, and Miller postponed her move to spend two days looking for him; the dog was found dead Jan. 1 on the side of the nearby highway I-75. It had been hit by a car. Delta donated the $1,000 it had put up as reward money to Atlanta Pet Rescue.

Of COURSE Delta is negligent with people’s pets; these things don’t “just happen” of themselves. Dead and damaged pets are caused by many airlines and have been happening for years yet people still put their animals in that same dangerous situation. There is now an airline in the recent media that exists only to fly your pet and they ride in carriers in the plane, not among a bunch of luggage in what amounts to an oversized glovebox. Airlines still think pets are just annoying pieces of property, not living feeling members of a person’s family.A few years ago when this was in the news yet again, there was a chart released showing how many dead/sickened/lost pets each airline had racked up over a certain period. I remember one airline stated that they were very proud of their “good” track record, as they had “only” lost so many pets in so many years. Here’s a consideration: would you stuff your dependent child in hot cargo? Would you be upset if the airline lost your kid or he or she died? Stop giving these airlines money to kill your pets!

How does Delta compare with other airlines? If dogs are getting out of their cages, it seems like the cage was not wired shut when the dog panics and tries to get out. Dog owners need to think about how stressed dogs can get and unless they are being stolen by Delta employees, the cage could be wired or strapped to prevent break out. The lost cargo would be on the airline, but that could also be a cover up for a dead dog or theft of an expensive breed.
