Ailments Linked To Overweight Pets Keeps Increasing

December 26, 2010 in Health & Science News, News

By Victor R. Martinez For USAToday.com

For most of Mufflers’ life, the 10-year-old miniature pinscher has been eating table food.
“He never liked dog food,” said Susan Valdez, Mufflers’ owner. “We would feed him whatever we would eat. If we would go to McDonald’s, we would give him Chicken McNuggets. If we would go to a restaurant, we would bring the scraps to him. He was extremely spoiled.”

All that unhealthful eating caught up to Mufflers. Mufflers — whose breed should weigh from 11 to 15 pounds — ballooned to 26 pounds. And in June, he was diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that took his eyesight.

“The most devastating thing for me is knowing that I did this to him,” said Valdez, who was unaware dogs could get diabetes. “He did not do this to himself. There is no correcting it. All I can do is make his life a lot easier. I really damaged his inside. His life span that we might have had for maybe 17 years has been cut down because of this.”

Obesity is not just a human epidemic.

In North America, obesity has swept through our pets, as more and more animals develop weight-related diseases that were almost unheard of 20 years ago. Diabetes, osteoarthritis, tears to the anterior cruciate ligaments, heart and respiratory disease and pancreatitis are all increasing among our four-legged friends.

BREAKING NEWS: Dog Files Mascot, Max Promoted To Rudolph’s Position For Tonight’s Sleigh Ride!

December 24, 2010 in Dog Files News, Holidays, News

North Pole, Earth — The word coming from sources within Santa’s Workshop is that Rudolph’s long running tinsel addiction has flared up once again.

The Red Nosed Reindeer has been moved to a secret location where he will be staying under the supervision of staff at the Betty Ford rehabilitation clinic. Our sources tell us that he has signed a six figure deal to star in next season’s, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew on the E! Network.

“Tinsel addiction is at its worst during the holiday season,” says Dr. Drew, “and it’s always been a problem issue with people from the North Pole. But I really think we’ll be able to make a difference by putting a spotlight on it with our show.”

The North Pole Maritime Association held a press conference today where a jolly elf dressed in red announced that Max, the Dog Files Mascot has been tapped to take Rudolph’s position tonight, should the weather around the world get any worse.

“We here at the North Pole couldn’t be more proud to add Max to the roster and we believe great things are in store for him tonight,” confirmed the chubby elf.

When asked by a member of the media if Max not having a red nose would hamper the sleigh ride, the jolly elf chimed in, “Did you happen to see the size of Max’s schnozz? No red nose needed here. Ho, ho, ho!”

Back in New Jersey where Max is awaiting pick up, he has confirmed that his antlers were delivered this morning by a group of tiny men dressed in green and red.

Max was surprised to see that the “antlers” were made of felt. Said one of the tiny folks, “Times are tough at the North Pole too!”

When asked for a comment, Max, the Dog Files Mascot said, “I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m ready to give my all to the team to make sure the world’s children get all their presents! But when it’s over, I’d advise Santa to put all the deer away quick because I love to chase them. Hey, what can I say, I’m a hound.”

Stay turned for more, late breaking details!

Seen in this AP/Newswire photo, Max, the Dog Files Mascot puts his game face on as he continually checks the ever-evolving weather patterns.

The Late Senator Ted Kennedy’s Dog, Splash Dies At 13

December 24, 2010 in Government, In Remembrance, News

By Michael Levenson For Boston.com

He was a published author. He inspired a president. He barked at members of Congress and foreign dignitaries.

Splash, Vicki and Edward M. Kennedy’s beloved Portuguese water dog and a constant presence at the senator’s side, bounding and romping through the halls of power, has died.

The death of the 13 1/2-year-old curly-haired canine is eliciting fond tributes, fit for the passing of such a famous fixture of official Washington. Splash, after all, hobnobbed with Elton John, leapt around the Oval Office, and once growled at Joe Biden and Paul Wellstone when the senators wouldn’t stop talking during a Democratic caucus meeting.

Edward Kennedy, who died of brain cancer in August 2009, was famously devoted to Splash. The lawmaker with a booming voice cooed like a baby around the dog, whether sailing with him off Cape Cod or holding him by his feet during an important meeting in his Capitol Hill office. Kennedy was especially fond of starting his mornings by hitting tennis balls off a racquet for Splash to fetch.

“I like to think that he and his Master are playing tennis ball fetch again tonight,’’ Vicki Kennedy wrote in an e-mail announcing Splash’s death.

Edward Kennedy bought Splash from a breeder because his son, US Representative Patrick J. Kennedy, is allergic to dogs and Portuguese water dogs are considered hypoallergenic. He and Vicki Kennedy fell in love with Splash’s boundless vim, and later purchased two more Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Cappy.

“He loved those dogs so much, and they were just so much a part of his life,’’ said Philip W. Johnston, a friend of the Kennedy family and former chairman of the state Democratic Party.

The dogs were also a disarming presence for many who met the legendary senator. Johnston recalled once leading a nervous group of community health center directors to meet with Kennedy in his ornate Senate office, decorated with family memorabilia.

“They were expecting some formal meeting with the senator, and then he comes in with the dogs jumping and yelling and having a great time,’’ Johnston said. “They were enthralled.’’

Vicki Kennedy called Splash “the best dog in all the world’’ and one “with many talents and accomplishments.’’

“He hated squirrels, but he loved to chase them,’’ she wrote. “He also loved to sail. And he could bark with the best of them, especially if you were a Republican or even a Democrat [other than his Master] who talked too loudly or for too long.’’

Splash was undoubtedly the most famous dog in the storied family.

Paul Sarbanes, the Maryland Democrat, was so charmed when Splash barked at Biden and Wellstone that he made the dog an honorary member of the Senate Democratic caucus. President George W. Bush honored him with the gift of a rawhide dog bone. “From Barney to Splash,’’ the president’s note read.

In 2006, Splash, with some help from his owners, wrote a children’s book, “My Senator and Me: A Dog’s-Eye View Of Washington, D.C.,’’ which chronicled his experiences in the Capitol — riding the tram, sitting in on committee meetings, and following Kennedy everywhere except to the Senate floor, where dogs are prohibited.

Splash was widely credited with inspiring President Obama’s decision last year to accept as a gift from Kennedy a Portuguese water dog of his own, which the president’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, named Bo.

Kennedy had been quietly lobbying the president to choose a Portuguese water dog for his family, a campaign the senator tacitly acknowledged during a period of fevered speculation about which breed the Obamas would choose.

“We love our Portuguese water dogs, and if the first family decides to go in that direction, we know they’ll fall in love, too,’’ Kennedy said in a statement in February 2009.

Johnston said yesterday that he will always remember Kennedy with Splash, Sunny, and Cappy at his side.

“The dogs,’’ he said, “were very a much part of him.’’

Halo & Ellen DeGeneres Donate 1 Million Meals In 2010!

December 24, 2010 in Charity, News

TAMPA, FL, December 23, 2010 – Halo, Purely for Pets, a leading producer of holistic pet care products, announced today it has “delivered” on the brand’s goal of donating 1 million meals to shelter pets awaiting adoption in 2010. Halo and its co-owner, animal advocate Ellen DeGeneres, were inspired to make this groundbreaking donation in celebration of the United States Postal Service’s 2010 social awareness stamp, “Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet.”

The campaign, first announced on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 17, 2010, officially launched on April 30, 2010 when the stamps became available for purchase nationwide. Halo offered pet lovers the opportunity to help participate in their goal of feeding 1 million meals to shelter dogs and cats in 2010 through contests, Facebook, Twitter, and a partnership with Freekibble.com.

Said DeGeneres, “At Halo we want to promote healthy living for pets and eating good food is a big part of that. So, we agreed to donate one million meals of Halo to shelter pets. I mean, imagine, an animal in a shelter, in a cage, lonely – a good meal is kinda all they have to look forward to, until you adopt them!”

Halo partnered with a number of non-profit organizations to donate the 1 million meals, including Freekibble, The Humane Society of the US, ASPCA, Pets for Patriots, and The National Canine Cancer Foundation amongst others.

Well over 100 shelters were served throughout the course of the campaign, including Caboodle Ranch in Jacksonville, FL; San Francisco Animal Care & Control; Rescue Ink, ASPCA New York; Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Search Dog Foundation, The Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, CA; and Humane Society of Central Oregon, the shelter at which Freekibble founder, Mimi Ausland, volunteers.

“We are thrilled with the success of the campaign and the incredible number of supporters who helped us to achieve this goal,” said Steve Marton, CEO, Halo, Purely for Pets. “It’s our mission to make a real difference for pets, and part of that mission is to ensure shelter pets are provided healthy, nutritious food.”

Halo, Purely For Pets® uses wholesome, natural, quality ingredients and only real meats in all of their pet food as they believe nutrition is the single most important factor in the quality of a pet’s life. Halo is the only pet food honored with the National Canine Cancer Foundation Seal of Excellence, and the only leading brand with just fresh meat, no chicken meal or other rendered meats.

The Triumph Of Rudy, The Two Legged Dog

December 23, 2010 in Adoption News, Inspirational, News

By Daphne Munro For bc15.com

PHOENIX – Even if you are not a dog lover you will love this story about a dog named Rudy, a 3-year-old Samoyed.

Rudy was found as a stray and was brought to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in November 2009. Jennifer Kenney, who owns Little Rascals Rescue and often visits Animal Care Center to find dogs that may need her help, saw Rudy in his kennel on her last visit.

He was sitting down in his kennel and was a very happy dog; Kenney figured someone would eventually adopt him because he was so happy. Then she looked back at Rudy and realized he was not sitting — he only had two legs.

It was love at first sight for both of them, and Kenney ended up adopting Rudy.

She assumed Rudy had a birth defect, but after a visit to the veterinarian, the vet suspected Rudy was hit by a car and the dog chewed off his own legs so he could survive.

Rudy is a happy dog and gets around as if he had four legs. Someone even attempted to donate a doggie wheelchair for him, but he would have nothing to do with it, instead choosing to get around on his own. He walks on his two front legs and the only time he has a challenge is walking on slick surfaces like linoleum or hard wood flooring. Besides that, Rudy does everything a four-legged dog would.

Kenney is passionate about rescuing animals, so passionate she has made it her life. She and her husband recue animals that need help, then get them healthy and find good homes, but Rudy is at home with Jennifer.
