Rent Sheep For Your Bored Border Collie

December 30, 2010 in Dog Safety, Environment, Lifestyle News, News, Working Dogs

By MICHAEL M. PHILLIPS For The Wall Sreet Journal

BATTLE GROUND, Wash.—Sue Foster knew what she needed to do when her border collie, Taff, was expelled from puppy school for herding the black Labs into a corner.

She rented some sheep.

Then she bought another border collie and rented some grazing land. Then she bought some sheep of her own. And a third border collie. Now, like the old lady who swallowed the fly, Ms. Foster keeps a llama to chase off the coyotes that threaten the lambs that go to market to finance the sheep that entertain her dogs.

Once upon a time, Americans got dogs for their sheep. Now they get sheep for their dogs. “I never dreamed it would go this far,” says Ms. Foster, 56 years old.

Border collies, first bred along the frontier between England and Scotland, are compulsive herders, with instincts so intense they sometimes search for livestock behind the television when sheep appear on screen, says Geri Byrne, owner of the Border Collie Training Center, in Tulelake, Calif. Left unoccupied, they’ll dig up the garden, chew up the doggie bed or persecute the cat.

Herding experts—yes, there is such a thing—say it’s increasingly common for people who get border collies as pets to wind up renting or buying sheep just to keep their dogs busy. “It’s something that’s snowballing all the time,” says Jack Knox, a Scottish-born shepherd who travels the U.S. giving herding clinics.

The Real Reason Vick Got A Second Chance

December 30, 2010 in Endangerment, Inhumane Practices, News, Sports, Uncategorized

By Richard Cohen For The Washington Post

The commentary about President Obama’s call to the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles regarding that adjudicated dog killer Michael Vick has now reached an apogee of stupidity that strongly suggest that too many otherwise smart people have lost their ability to reason. Obama, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recounted, said, “‘So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.’ He said, ‘It’s never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail.’ And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.” It helps, I think, that Vick has completed 63.2 percent of his passes and has 20 touchdowns. He is not your average felon.

And, yet, that is the comparison that’s made. You would think from the commentary that Vick was some poor kid who got caught swiping something so he could get something to eat. You would think he had on the spur of the moment stolen a car, gone for a joy ride — and collided with a police car at an intersection. You would think that he was anything other than in immensely gifted and immensely rich professional athlete who got a signing bonus of $37 million and had endorsement deals from Nike, Coca-Cola, Kraft and others. Vick staged dog fights and killed dogs not because he had to, but because he chose to. He’s a thug.

Dog fighting was Vick’s hobby. He had been warned about it. His own father had told him to stop. He persisted because, as with many great athletes, he was never held accountable. A nation of jock-sniffers always looks away when a great athlete does something wrong. Nothing is an important as winning — we all know that — and Vick was and is a winner.

The sanctimony regarding this dog killer is sickening. He was wantonly cruel, not only pitting dogs against one another in fights, but drowning poor performers. Didn’t he know this was cruel? Didn’t he know wounded dogs were in pain? Is he so stupid he didn’t notice the blood, the torn skin, the…? Oh, forget it! The man’s an animal himself.

Now Vick has punched all the tickets on the road to rehabilitation. He is contrite. He loves pooches. He might even get a dog himself. How much of this is genuine and how much is synthetic I leave to you. But I’ll tell you this. Vick got a second chance not because he deserves it but because he can play football. This is the lesson we can all take from this sorry episode. It’s one thing to be sorry. It’s much better to hit your man in the end zone.

Did President Barack Obama just set back Animal Welfare? Please post your comments below.

In the video below, they are wrong. There isn’t a lifetime ban on Vick owning a dog. The ban is just till next year when his probation is over.

President Obama may be in the doghouse with pet lovers after praising the Philadelphia Eagles for signing disgraced NFL star Michael Vick after his dogfighting scandal.

Obama — who is both a dog lover and football fan — made a surprise call to team owner Jeffrey Lurie.

“The president wanted to talk about two things, but the first was Michael,” Lurie recalled.

“He said, ‘So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.’ He was . . . passionate about it,” Lurie told Peter King of NBC/Sports Illustrated.

“[Obama] said it’s never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail. And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.”

Before Vick pleaded guilty in 2007 to federal conspiracy charges, three associates had been ready to testify that the athlete, then the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, had executed dogs.

After serving 21 months, Vick was signed to a new contract with the Eagles, who made him their star quarterback this year.

The White House said Obama made the call to Lurie to discuss plans for installing alternative energy technology at Lincoln Financial Field, “during which they spoke about that and other issues.”

The president, “of course, condemns the crimes that Michael Vick was convicted of, but, as he’s said previously, he does think that individuals who have paid for their crimes should have an opportunity to contribute to society again,” White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

Some animal-rights activists weren’t as forgiving.

“I think there are many more commendable former convicts that would have been better examples for the president to give attention to,” said Alison Gianotto, president and founder of Pet-Abuse.com.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said, “The president is all about moving forward, and PETA is right there with him in the hope that Michael Vick spends every second playing ball and never looks sideways at a dog or other animal as long as he draws breath.”

“Most of the dogs he knew over the years didn’t get a second chance, and the ones who did, still shake and cower to this day.”
