18 Dead Dogs Found At Former Pet Grooming Facility In Deer Park, Illinois

December 31, 2010 in Endangerment, Inhumane Practices, Law Enforcement, News, Tragedy

By Stacey Baca For WLS-TV

A suburban woman is charged with animal cruelty after investigators say they found 18 dead dogs in a former pet grooming facility.

Diane Eldrup was arrested by Kildeer police and is being held on $250,000 bond.

The dogs were found in far northwest suburban Deer Park.

Eldrup was charged with felony animal cruelty charges and was in custody Friday night.

The Kildeer Police Department is investigating the case since it has jurisdiction and provides police services for Deer Park.

The deadly discovery was made inside Muddy Paws Kennels and Rescue. Police say Eldrup’s business has been closed for a year.

Police say the Eldrup and her husband are in the midst of a divorce.

Authorities also say the dead animals were discovered when Mr. Eldrup went to the home to collect some of his belongings.

“He opened the door and saw the condition and he immediately called us and then we went in,” said Kildeer Police Chief Louis Rossi.

Friends of Diane Eldrup say she has an 8-year-old son. They say they have never noticed any problems in the past and that Eldrup has helped them with their own animals.

“She works with our horses sometimes, and she tells us how to treat them, how to take care of them.,” said Bryan Costello, a friend of Eldrup. “One of the little kittens got hurt, and she fixed his paw up really good and the cat’s doing fine. She knew a lot about animals and how to take care of them.”

In the meantime, Kildeer police say four dogs and two cats were found alive and are now being cared for by Lake County Animal Control.

Officials hope others can learn from this situation.

“I think the most important point is that these types of situations are not situations that only happen in a specific type of community. They are universal, and when we find out about these situations we should make it known so that we can learn from them and hopefully not have them repeated,” said Kildeer Village President Nandia Black.

The Building Department has also shut down that building so no one can live in it right now.

Kildeer police say they will be looking at all of the dead dogs and that some of them have chips, so they will be tracking down the owners.

Eldrup is due in court in January.

Kiss Of Life Is Dog’s Best Friend In Rough Water

Close call: Jerzy the border collie-cross was rescued from the Barron River and then revived through mouth-to-mouth by Petra Lovey (left), who was helped by Clare Hensley.

By Cait Bester For The Cairns Post

Australia — A KURANDA woman jumped into floodwaters to rescue a drowning dog then gave it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to bring it back to life.

Petra Lovey yesterday told how she jumped into the Barron River after seeing Jerzy the border collie-cross dive into the swollen waters and get swept under a bridge.

“The last thing I saw were her eyes looking at me as she was swept under the old wooden bridge,” Ms Lovey said.

“The Barron River flows like a torrent so it didn’t take much for her to be sucked under the bridge.”

Clare Hensley, who was walking Jerzy, feared the worst but Ms Lovey was determined to save the dog.

“Jerzy was fighting it – she was completely submerged and she would have been submerged for about two minutes,” Ms Lovey said.

“I knew she would come through the other side but it was a matter of trying to spot her as she came through.

“I saw a little speck of black in the water so I jumped in, everyone was screaming out to me that she was gone, but I wasn’t going to give up. Somehow I found her body and grabbed her.”

Jerzy was lifeless when Ms Lovey and Ms Hensley got her out of the water.

“Clare started to perform CPR but was unsure how to do it properly on a dog so I took over,” Ms Lovey said.

“Jerzy was flat – she was gone.

“But after a few compressions somehow there were signs of life.”

Ms Lovey said she had experience in caring for animals but had never had to react so urgently.

“I used to be a zookeeper and I have worked many years in veterinary clinics, so I knew what I had to do, but this is the first time that I have had to perform resuscitation ever,” she said.

“I have never had to use CPR on a human and now I have brought a dog back to life.

“I wasn’t going to give up – I didn’t even think twice about giving her mouth to mouth.

“I treated her like a child and you wouldn’t give up on a child so I wasn’t going to give up on Jerzy.”
Jerzy’s owner April Hahne, her husband Scott and their two young children had been visiting family in the area and headed home yesterday morning with a sore and sorry dog.

Mrs Hahne said she took Jerzy to the vet on Sunday afternoon where he stayed for three nights.

There were tears of happiness when Mrs Hahne thanked her hero personally yesterday.

“Jerzy is my first baby,” she said.

“She just isn’t a dog – she is very much part of our family and I am so thankful for Petra and Clare for saving her.”

When the President Calls About the Vick Dogs

By Francis Battista For Best Friends

Now that President Obama has jumped on the Michael Vick bandwagon with an official call to Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie to congratulate him for giving the quarterback another chance, all of us here at Best Friends are waiting for a call from the White House to congratulate us for giving Vick’s dogs a second chance. I’m quite sure that the other organizations that also took on some of the canine survivors of the football star’s dogfighting operation are similarly poised.

The conventional wisdom on this is that the president’s people have put their finger to the wind and decided that Michael Vick has been sanitized for political consumption by his success. (It’s interesting to speculate how he would be perceived if he were having a lousy year.) Personally, I’m kind of tired of hearing and reading about Michael Vick and wish that the media would lose its obsession with the man, especially since any mention of or concern about the dogs who managed to escape with their lives from his care is conspicuously absent from his public statements.

While we no longer wait by the phone for a call from Mr. Vick asking after his dogs, the likelihood of a call from the president has brought new esprit to the switchboard team and I’ve put together some notes on those we call the Vicktory dogs in case someone puts the historic call through to me by mistake. The conversation will go something like this:
