Dog Files Dispatch Ep. 3: Betsy’s Law & Prop B: Audio Podcast

November 21, 2010 in Audio Podcast, Dog Files News, DogFiles Dispatch, News

Dog Files Dispatch Monthly Audio PodcastWe have a great episode of Dog Files Dispatch this time around!

First up is a roundtable discussion with Dino Dogan, Laci Schaible and Neil Brogan talking Missouri Prop B.

And second, we have an interview with Madeleine Kayser of Tom’s River New Jersey. In 2007, she brought her 16 month old pup, Betsy to the vets for a simple surgery. The surgery was a success and the vet said Betsy should stay overnight for supervision. In the morning, her pup was found strangled trying to get out of her kennel. The Vet admitted no one was there overnight to watch her. This is a important, cautionary tale that we all should no more about.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

Stolen Maltese Found; Reunited With Family

November 21, 2010 in Law Enforcement, News

By Naples Daily News

FORT MEYERS- A customer at a Fort Myers Publix had quite the surprise waiting for him when he returned to his car Friday night — a stolen dog, which had been featured in news reports throughout the day.

The dog, a Maltese named Sugar, had been reported stolen from a home on Pine Hammock Circle earlier that day, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported.

In addition to stealing Sugar, the thieves ransacked the home and made off with a computer, flat screen television, money and jewelry.

“We can deal with the other things that … have been taken. But it’s very difficult to deal with the theft of a little dog,” the homeowner, Marjorie Griffin, told NBC-2 on Friday. “She was a part of our family.”

Well, it looks like she still is.

The Publix customer, whose name was not released, told deputies that he left his windows down while he shopped at the store near the intersection of Summerlin Road and Colonial Boulevard.

When he returned to his car, reports say he found Sugar.

Sugar was unharmed and has been reunited with his family.

Authorities are still investigating the burglary.

Arizona Shelter Worker Fired After Accidentally Euthanizing Target

November 21, 2010 in Animal Control, Dog Safety, In Remembrance, Law Enforcement, Legal News, News, Tragedy

By Penny Eims

Florence, Arizona – The shelter worker that mistakenly euthanized Target, the dog hailed as a war hero, has been fired from the Pinal County Animal Care and Control in Arizona.

According to the New York Times, the worker was officially terminated on Friday.

Prior to the termination, the worker responsible for Target’s death had been on paid administrative leave.

People from across the nation have been both horrified and deeply saddened at the tragic mistake that took the young dog’s life.

Target had been deemed a hero after saving her owner’s life, as well as the lives other soldiers, from a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.

It is shocking and heart-breaking to know that a dog that managed to survive the war-torn country of Afghanistan ended up dying at an animal shelter here in the United States.

Battle Over Australian Hero Dog, Sarbi

November 21, 2010 in Heroics, Military, News, Working Dogs, World

From The Herald Sun.com

A TUG of love has broken out between the Australian Army and the original owners of Sarbi, the heroic bomb detection dog.

Sarbi was missing in action for 14 months in the wilds of Afghanistan after a major battle in September 2008, and is due back in Australia before Christmas after spending six months in quarantine in Dubai.

Sarbi will then have to spend another 30 days at the Eastern Creek isolation centre near Sydney and, on receiving a clean bill of health, will be handed back to the Army in January to return to work.

But original owner Wendy Upjohn, who gave Sarbi and her brother Rafiki to the army when they moved from the country to the city, has written to the Defence Minister seeking the return of the dog after her military service is over.

The Army approached the family about the two-year-old dogs when they were seeking a home for them in 2004.

Ms Upjohn explained that when a corporal came to collect the dogs he told the family they would be able to claim them back “in about five years”, when their service was finished.

“Unfortunately there was nothing in writing,” she said.

The Army has told Ms Upjohn the policy was for the dog’s handler to have first dibs on a retired mutt.

“If he wants her then fair enough; we just wanted her back as a family pet,” she said.

The Army denies any such undertaking was given and says the dog will remain with her handler, Sgt Dave S, and his family when she retires.

Bill Passed By Congress To End “Crush Videos”

November 21, 2010 in Dog Safety, Government, Inhumane Practices, Law Enforcement, Legal News, News

By Jim Abrams

WASHINGTON – Videos appealing to a sexual fetish by showing women killing small animals will be banned under legislation that cleared the Senate Friday and is heading to President Barack Obama for his signature.

The voice vote in the Senate followed a vote in the House on Monday to ban so-called crush videos that depict the abuse and killing of animals.

Congress banned such videos in 1999, but the Supreme Court earlier this year struck down the law, saying it was too broadly written and violated First Amendment free speech protections.

The more narrowly crafted bill going to the White House makes it a crime to sell or distribute videos that violate bans on animal cruelty by showing animals being burned, drowned, suffocated or impaled.

“Animal torture videos are barbaric and have no place in a civilized society,” said Rep. Gary Peters, D-Mich., one of the House sponsors.

“By promising to lock up the people who produce and distribute these videos we can work to put a halt to this horrendous practice.”

Crush videos typically show women, often barefoot or wearing high heels, stomping small animals to death.

Every state bans animal cruelty, but it has been difficult to apply those laws to crush videos because they often do not show faces, dates or locations.
