Clooney, Irish Setter, Captures Best In Show At 2010 National Dog Show

November 29, 2010 in Breed, Celebrity, Contest, News

By Linda Cole

In Thursday’s National Dog Show competition, a Boxer named Scarlett had impressive credentials, but it was Clooney, an Irish Setter, who won Best in Show.
Clooney and his handler, Peter Kubacz, summed up the day’s events with an interview at the end of the dog show.

When Kubacz was asked if Clooney knew he was the top dog, Clooney nodded yes with the enthusiasm of a true winner.

Clooney was one of more than 2,000 dogs representing 179 different breeds that took to the ring on Thanksgiving Day to compete in The National Dog Show presented by Purina.

Hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, the show is one of the oldest benched conformation dog shows in the country and has been held annually since 1933.

A conformation dog show shows off breeding stock and a benched show allows those attending to mingle with the dogs behind the scenes.

To pick the winning dog, the judge has to know the breed standard of each dog.

Six new dog breeds were among the breeds showcased in this year’s National Dog Show.

New breeds are recognized by the American Kennel Club when the breed has a good following spread across the country with a parent club to oversee them.

The six new breeds introduced this year were the Boykin Spaniel in the sporting group, the Cane Corso and the

Leonberger in the working group, the Bluetick Coonhound and Redbone Coonhound in the hound group and the Icelandic Sheepdog in the herding group.

People Save the Day & Save Animals At Kansas Pet Connection

November 26, 2010 in Adoption News, News

From fox4kc.com

MISSION, KAN. — One metro animal shelter on the brink of bankruptcy may not be able to save their business, but they did manage to save many animals in the past few days.

People at the Pet Connection in Mission, Kansas say they’ve adopted out more than 100 animals.

Sheila Beckwich and her friends drove from Belton to check out dogs at the Pet Connection.

“We really weren’t picky,” Beckwich said.

She settled on a seven-year-old German Shepherd named Taylor.

“They make us laugh, just look at that face,” Beckwich said.

That’s good news for the Pet Connection because they are going through hard times. They’ve been forced to close down one building and may be forced to close a second one as well.

“Right now it’s day-to-day and week-to-week,” said Melody Kelso with Pet Connection.

They may not save their business, but they managed to save their animals.

“It’s amazing,” Kelso said. “People have had to wait for hours for us to even help them the last three days and no one has been disgruntled or cross.”

Volunteers say they will continue to try and save more dogs.

“More dogs will be coming in after Thanksgiving,” said volunteer Faye Hopkins. “They will be saved from being euthanized.”

That’s not a bad way to celebrate Thanksgiving. All the new animal owners say they’re happy to have a new family member.

For now, they’re not sure if the shelter can stay open until the first of the year. One thing is for sure, the Pet Connection says that all adoptions are free for now and for the animals they will get after Thanksgiving.

Study Proves That Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats

November 26, 2010 in Health & Science News, News

From The Herald Sun.com

DOG owners, this will confirm what you always thought. And cat owners, prepare to extend your claws: scientists at Oxford University claim canines are smarter than felines.

And the reason, according to the researchers, is that dogs are more social animals and therefore have bigger brains than the more solitary-inclined cats, the (London) Daily Telegraph said.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, charted the evolutionary history of various mammals’ brains over 60 million years and found a link between the size of an animal’s brain in relation to its body and how socially active it was.

Dr Susanne Shultz, who led the research, told The Telegraph, “Dogs have always been regarded as the more social animals while cats like to get on with their own thing alone.

But it appears that interaction is good for the brain and extends to other species, like ourselves…

“This study overturns the long-held belief that brain size has increased across all mammals.

Instead, groups of highly social species have undergone much more rapid increases than more solitary species.”

And here’s one more thing to bark about: “All dogs are quite good at solving problems,” Dr Shultz added, ” which gives credence to the traditional image of the cunning fox which is a member of the same family.”

More And More Homeless New Yorkers Pick Dogs Over Shelters

November 26, 2010 in Lifestyle News, News

Joseph Perez, and Shorty, a corgi-Jack Russell terrier mix, is among a number of homeless people who keep a pet.

By Rachel Ellner for nydailynews.com

Joseph Perez sits beside a battered shopping cart filled with street-collectables. Seated on the cart is his most precious possession, a prince with a bone named Shorty.

The round-bellied corgi-Jack Russell terrier mix travels with his own possessions. There are chew toys and more than a dozen various-sized stuffed animals propped up beside him.

Tucked into a corner of the cart is a small purple cup for donations. On the front hangs a sign that says, “Can you please help us out today. Thank you for your kindness. Have a good day. Woof-Woof.”

Perez, 53, is among the small number of the roughly 3,000 homeless population who would rather keep a pet than have a roof over their heads.

“The folks on the street are mainly interested in surviving. They don’t think having a pet to care for is a very good survival strategy,” says Patrick Markee, senior policy analyst at the Coalition for the Homeless. “The majority, in order to get shelter or housing have to give the pets up, at least for some period of time and that’s a very hard thing to do.”

For Perez, who has a weathered but handsome face, that’s unthinkable. He and his late wife, Christina, found the abandoned dog on 110th St. and Lexington Ave. about six years ago.
