Stolen Maltese Found; Reunited With Family

By Naples Daily News

FORT MEYERS- A customer at a Fort Myers Publix had quite the surprise waiting for him when he returned to his car Friday night — a stolen dog, which had been featured in news reports throughout the day.

The dog, a Maltese named Sugar, had been reported stolen from a home on Pine Hammock Circle earlier that day, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported.

In addition to stealing Sugar, the thieves ransacked the home and made off with a computer, flat screen television, money and jewelry.

“We can deal with the other things that … have been taken. But it’s very difficult to deal with the theft of a little dog,” the homeowner, Marjorie Griffin, told NBC-2 on Friday. “She was a part of our family.”

Well, it looks like she still is.

The Publix customer, whose name was not released, told deputies that he left his windows down while he shopped at the store near the intersection of Summerlin Road and Colonial Boulevard.

When he returned to his car, reports say he found Sugar.

Sugar was unharmed and has been reunited with his family.

Authorities are still investigating the burglary.
