ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) – The Missouri Humane Society is rescuing dozens of dogs from a central Missouri home Monday evening. The rescue is taking place in Saline County, about 200 miles west of St. Louis. The dogs will be brought to St. Louis Monday night. He Humane Society says one woman was caring for some 70 dogs. Apparently she just took on more than she could handle, and soon she was overwhelmed.
The Humane Society was contacted by Animal Planet, after the network discovered the woman while filming a special on animal hoarding.
In this case, the owner had several different breeds and 25 were living inside her home. But 46 dogs were living outside on another property, and they are in especially bad shape.
The Humane Society is waiting to hear from their rescuers to determine how the dogs that were living indoors are doing.
Rescuers say animal hoarding is not all that unusual, and it seems to hit older women the most. It is considered a psychological disorder. They say in this case the owner cooperated, so she might not face any charges. But a decision on her fate has not yet been determined. For now the focus will be on caring for the injured dogs.
The Humane Society will be looking for donations to help care for these dogs when they arrive.
