Last week I was invited to come out to Las Vegas and attend SuperZoo as a guest of Bissell, the We Mean Clean People!

SuperZoo brings over 9000 pet professionals together to show their wares and make business deals with retailers. It covers all types of pets, but from what I saw, 90% of the products there were for dogs.

I’ve been really been excited to be a part of the Bissell Pack Of Pet Lovers and I couldn’t wait to head out to SuperZoo.

I stayed at the excellent hotel, New York, New York. And no, I did not go on the roller coaster.

The Bissell crew took great care of me, including supplying a limo to pick me up. Just kidding, I took a cab!

The convention Floor was enormous! It took me the entire day to see everything... I think.

Yep, you can now sit your little dog at the table with you. Not sure why though... any ideas?

Saw some beautiful designer dog crates!

Hanging at the Bissell Booth. That's (left to right) Erin Reed, Sue Potter and Chris Kalish. Everyone at the booth is a dog lover and has one or two furry canines waiting for them at home. And no, Chris is not for rent!

Chris Marshall shows me Bissell’s new commercial-grade carpet cleaner, the Pawsitively Clean Deep Cleaning Machine. You'll be able to rent it from participating pet stores soon. Not that your doggie messes up your rug or anything.

Bissel has an unbelievable amount of cleaning equipment for us dog lovers. You know that dog saliva that dries on your car windows when you take your hounds for a ride? Yep, they have something just for that!

See what I mean? Bissell is as crazy about dogs as we are. Cats too. Hey, that beagle looks like Remy!

Got to meet Brewster, a two year old, 185 lbs. Harlequin Great Dane hanging out with Blue Buffalo.

VIP Products line of Mighty Dog Toys. They are built extra tough for dogs like Max, the Dog Files Mascot.

Nature's Logic puts no synthetic vitamins into their food. They believe dogs, like humans, should get natural vitamins directly from the food.

Two beautiful Great Pyrenees dogs.

There is no truth to the rumor that I put on a Batman outfit, jumped from my hotel window to the opposite building and apprehended a crooked Hong Kong business man. Nope, none at all. Really, not true.

I would like to take a moment to thank the Bissell crew for inviting me to this great event and making me feel at home. They have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are indeed, a pack of pet lovers. Hey, we spent a half hour at dinner discussing the finer points of dog food! That alone convinced me that Bissell is full of crazy dog people. Check out Bissell’s Website here and follow them on twitter here.

Charlotte, NC, City Leaders Make Changes To Dog Chaining Ordinance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – As of Monday night, city leaders made several changes to how pet owners can chain their dogs.

The changes affect anyone who keeps their dog outside on a chain.

The biggest change: A dog must be tethered by a chain at least ten feet long. Also, you can’t chain a dog younger the four months and the tether must allow your dog easy access to food, water and shelter.

But there are those who say the changes don’t go far enough like Neya Warren, head of the Charlotte chapter of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs.

“Most chained dogs are chained 24-7,” said Warren. “It’s not good for them.”

Warren also said even chaining a dog forces it to be more aggressive which can lead to attacks.

“It really makes that fight or flight response come in to play more often than not,” she said. “And therefore, what happen is, they become more naturally aggressive.”

Kevin Robinson, who keeps his pit bull–lab mix on a chain in the backyard agrees and says he give his dog time off the chain everyday.

I try to get him off the chain at least twice a day too,” Robinson said. “I think that’s big too. Dogs that live their entire life on the chain; their oxygen level is depleted because they’re kicking up dust and rust and it’s all in their lungs.”

The changes don’t apply to anyone who lives in a townhouse, condo, or apartment. Those residents can only keep their dog tethered temporarily for exercise or relief.

You also have some time to get used to the new rule. The changes don’t take effect until March 2011.

Don’t Pooh-Pooh It: Your Dog’s Poop Could Be An Effective Source Of Energy

Dogs help us in so many ways, from herding cattle to sniffing out everything from bombs to cancer. They’re our eyes, ears and limbs when we’re disabled, and they predict epileptic seizures. They offer social support and health benefits, and they can even rescue us from drowning.

It seems that the only drawback to owning a dog is the unpleasant chore of having to pick up its poop, but a dog park in Cambridge, Mass., is showing how even that chore can have a silver lining.

PhysOrg.com is reporting on The Park Spark project, a methane digester that runs on dog waste. Recently installed at the Pacific Street Dog Park in Cambridge, the “scientific-art intervention” was conceived by conceptual artist Matthew Mazzotta, and is the first dog park methane digester in the United States. It works by transforming dog waste into methane, which is then used to power a lamppost in the park. The park provides biodegradable dog waste bags, and encourages dog owners to drop their pup’s waste into the methane digester’s feeding tube. A turn of the hand crank, and voilà: The mixture of excrement and anaerobic bacteria helps the methane rise to the top where it can be burned.

FAIRFIELD — A Fairfield woman was a hero after she banged on doors at the Heritage Glen Apartments, letting residents know the building was on fire.

Lori Burns was driving past the building in the 4900 block of Pleasant Avenue on her way home from church at around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Burns said she noticed black smoke billowing out of a second floor balcony. The flames quickly ignited the balcony above.

“What scared me was I saw no one exiting the building, they weren’t even aware of it,” she said. “I started banging on doors on the lower level. The only one who opened was a young girl. She said ‘I was asleep but my dogs started barking when they heard you banging.’ I said, ‘Honey, you would have burned to death.’ ”

Fairfield Fire Chief Don Bennett said 17 families live in the building, but no one was injured. A firefighter was hurt, but Bennett said he wouldn’t release any details. The American Red Cross was on the scene coordinating care for displaced residents.

Allison Duncan, the resident Burns awakened, said when Burns yelled “Fire!” she grabbed her baby and a bottle and fled the burning building.

Firefighters later were able to rescue her two dogs — she said they were scared to leave with her.

“I’m just glad she knocked on my door,” she said. “I was sleeping on the couch directly under the balcony where the fire was.”

Duncan said she was told she’ll likely have water damage in her apartment. Judy Abbott, who lives nearby, was having a garage sale when she heard about the fire and rushed right over.

“I had two or three people stop in to my garage sale and I thank the Lord they did,” she said. “I’ve got furniture left and little girls clothing I’m going to give to them.”

Burns had a pile of clothes and shoes she had her mother bring over for the fire victims.

Bennett said the fire started on a balcony, but wasn’t sure what touched it off. It roared up to the roof, collapsing it on the right side of the building.

Bennett said the apartment building had been restored after fire damaged it in 1994.

Fire departments from Hamilton, Colerain Twp. and Forest Park responded to the blaze. Damage estimates were not available late Sunday.

Hewitt applies subtle pressure on Dave Somers to go for a noon walk Sept. 9 in Everett, Wash.

From Paw Prints Post

The “public servant” in Snohomish County government in Washington starts each day with a burst of energy that sends his mop of black and brown hair bouncing.

He drops by his favorite staffers on the eighth floor, jumping on desks, looking ready to do a back flip at any moment. Then, full of treats and attention, he abruptly patters to his master’s office and takes a nap.

Meet Hewitt, the dog referred to as the sixth member of the County Council in Everett.

Hewitt is a terrier mix about the size of a small poodle. He’s been a fixture at the office for about a year and a half, after being handed through a car window one day as County Councilman Dave Somers sat in traffic.

A D.C. police officer shot and killed a festival-goer’s dog amid hundreds of onlookers in Adams Morgan on Sunday afternoon in an incident that was either completely justified or totally unnecessary, depending on whom you ask.

This much, witnesses say, is clear: Sometime after noon on Sunday, two dogs started snapping at each other in the middle of a crowd enjoying cheese fries and funnel cake at the annual Adams Morgan Day festival on 18th Street NW. D.C. police officers soon got involved, and at some point, one of them shot and killed the larger dog, described as either a pit bull or Shar-Pei mix.

The disagreement is in the details.

Aaron Block, 25, of Dupont Circle said he was walking his 2-year-old Shar-Pei mix, Parrot, up 18th Street when the dog suddenly turned around and bit a poodle that was passing by. He said he separated the two dogs — cutting his hand inside Parrot’s mouth in the process — and was subduing his dog when police arrived.

That’s when a D.C. police officer took over, putting his knee in the middle of Parrot’s back while he pulled the dog’s forelegs behind him, Block said. He said that the officer then grabbed Parrot by his neck and threw him over a banister at the Brass Knob antique store and that just as the dog righted itself, the officer pulled out his gun and fired. Parrot was “a full 12 to 15 steps away,” Block said, and was “making no aggressive overtures.” The dog, he noted, “doesn’t handle stairs well.”

“The officer drew his gun in an unnecessary act of cowboy gunslinging law enforcement and shot my dog amidst a crowd of thousands,” said Block, who was fostering Parrot while he was waiting to be adopted through the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “The problems here are almost too numerous to count.”

Flint The Spaniel DOESN’T Make Dinner Out Of Tiny Sparrow Friend Chicky

From MailOnline

They were originally bred as hunting dogs who would think nothing of gobbling up a tiny bird as a tasty snack.

But cocker spaniel Flint went against all his natural instincts to befriend this tiny sparrow which had tumbled out of its nest and crash-landed in the garden.

Chicky appearing in great danger and he tumbled on to the lawn in Wiltshire, but softy Flint appeared to have taken pity on him.

The dog’s owner Greg Larcombe and his four children noticed the unlikely friendship blossoming in their garden and were thrilled that they had a new pet to look after – if only for a short time.

Twins Rebecca and Annabel aged 13, Harry aged 11 and eight-year-old Sophie fed Chicky a diet of mealworms – and soon he was strong enough to fly away.

Flint’s ancestors came from Spain and were bred in the UK to specifically catch Eurasian Woodcocks, which is where the term ‘cocker’ comes from.
