OK Go’s New Music Video Features Rescue Dogs: Fun Video

September 20, 2010 in Fun Videos, News

OK Go is known for their clever videos and this music video is no different. Here’s what OK Go had to say about the video on their site.

– Kenn

For our latest video, White Knuckles, we had the opportunity to work with some amazing collaborators. These four-legged rock stars worked harder (and with a lot less complaining) than we did, and never ceased to make us smile during the extensive training and filming process.

As most of the dogs in this video are rescues, we decided to donate a portion of all proceeds from the sale of the video on our site to animal rescue in this country. The video will be available for sale shortly, at which point you’ll be able to buy one of several different video packages as a way of donating. But if you just can’t wait that long, don’t let us stop you from donating directly to the ASPCA right now:

Thanks,
OK Go

Edmond, Oklahoma Drug Dog’s Finding Lead To Arrests, Suspensions At School

EDMOND — Officers took their newly trained police dog to local high schools, where he sniffed cars and lockers and promptly found drugs.

Two students were arrested Monday at Edmond Memorial High School and one at Edmond North High School, police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said Wednesday.

Four students were suspended from classes at Memorial and two were suspended from North, said Brenda Lyons, Edmond Public Schools associate superintendent.

Chu did not release the names of the students or the amount and type of drugs that were found. She said reports on the arrests have not been written.
Justice, a 70-pound black Labrador retriever, also searched Edmond Santa Fe High School, but no one was suspended there, Lyons said.

One of the students caught up in the drug investigation was removed from his classroom in the middle of the day by a school official while a police officer and the dog remained in the room’s doorway, a witness said.

Lyons said the drug dog will be used to make periodic random searches at the middle and high schools.

“We feel like he is already doing his job,” Lyons said.

Justice and his partner, officer Dack Pearson, are assigned to Boulevard Academy.

The dog was certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training on Aug. 31.

“I think he is a great tool,” Pearson said. “We hope that he will help the kids make better choices.”

Police turned to the Edmond Animal Welfare Center to find a good dog because money is tight, Pearson said.

The animal was brought to the center after being found wandering around a construction site.

Justice is only trained to find drugs. The police department has four other dogs that are cross-trained in explosives, narcotics and for patrol.

“Justice knows no aggressive behaviors,” Pearson said. “He has not been trained that way. He always wants to play — that is his drive.”

Jim Carlile, Boulevard Academy principal, said, “We like it because he is strictly a drug dog and not cross-trained. He is a friendly guy, just a puppy.

“He has proven himself very quickly.”

Slain Police Dog To Receive Full Police Honors In Memorial

From marconews.com

In an echo of the funeral for slain Fort Myers Police Officer Andrew Widman, Lee County law enforcers will gather Thursday to bid farewell to a partner gunned down in the line of duty.

This partner is a little different than most, however.

Rosco, a 4-year-old German Shepherd trained in narcotics and fugitive apprehension died of his wounds last week after he was shot by an armed suspect multiple times.

Officers shot and killed the teenage suspect during the chase.

Fort Myers Police Chief Doug Baker says Rosco deserves an honor commensurate with a fallen police officer.

“This isn’t a dog that died of old age or maybe unfortunate disease,” Baker said. “This dog got shot and killed by an armed robber. In my mind, it raises the bar.”

California Dog Used As Bait In Fights Rescued

September 20, 2010 in Lifestyle News, News

By Erika I. Ritchie for The Orange County Register

MISSION VIEJO, CALIFORNIA – Phoenix rubbed his earless, scarred head against Tiffany Norton’s hand, pushing for a pat.

The emaciated German shepherd-mix had just come out of a bath on Tuesday to soothe his infected, flea-covered body. The dog was rescued on Monday by Coastal German Shepherd Rescue from a shelter in Downey – hours before he was scheduled to be euthanized – and brought to Alicia Pet Care Center.

Rescuers believe Phoenix, about 5 years old, was used as a bait dog – essentially a submissive dog that is confined and attacked by fight dogs-in-training. He was found as a stray a few days ago, said Norton, the rescue’s director.
That’s typical, according to officials with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Task Force.

“We usually see the dogs after they’ve been in fights and are discarded in trash bins or as stray dogs wandering in the alley,” Officer Ramon Muñez said. “We have some weeks where we’ll see a lot and then it will ebb off. The (Los Angeles) District Attorney has put out a hotline. We get tips from that, 911 and Animal Control.”

Boo Boo, a long-haired female Chihuahua, is just 4 inches tall and weighs only 2 pounds. Giant George, a 43-inch-tall Great Dane who tips the scales at 245 pounds.

One is the size of a bagel. The other weighs more than Eli Manning.

The tallest and tiniest dogs in the world sized each other up in Central Park Wednesday after making it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Boo Boo, a long-haired female Chihuahua, is just 4 inches tall and weighs only 2 pounds.

She went paw-to-paw with Giant George, a 43-inch-tall Great Dane who tips the scales at 245 pounds.

“I thought he might want a snack or something, but he was very gentle,” Boo Boo’s owner Lana Elswick said after meeting Giant George.

“Boo Boo was fascinated. She waited a few minutes and then she went over.”

The tiny Kentucky canine weighed 1 ounce when she was born by Caesarean section in 2006.

“The vet said if she lived, it would be a miracle,” Elswick said. “She is my miracle.”

The palm-sized pet eats just a tablespoon of dog food each day, will drink only bottled water and has a sweet tooth.

Giant George, meanwhile, scarfs down 110 pounds of dog food each month – the equivalent of 30 Nathan’s hot dogs a day.

“He would eat twice that if we let him,” said owner David Nasser of Tucson, Ariz. “He’s great, very playful with tons of energy.”

George sleeps on a queen-sized mattress at the end of the Nassers’ bed and took up three bulkhead seats on the plane to New York.

Nasser and his wife, Christie, have a 1-year-old daughter and don’t worry about letting George get near her.

“He’s a gentle giant, and that’s the true thing about the Great Danes,” he said.
