A D.C. police officer shot and killed a festival-goer’s dog amid hundreds of onlookers in Adams Morgan on Sunday afternoon in an incident that was either completely justified or totally unnecessary, depending on whom you ask.

This much, witnesses say, is clear: Sometime after noon on Sunday, two dogs started snapping at each other in the middle of a crowd enjoying cheese fries and funnel cake at the annual Adams Morgan Day festival on 18th Street NW. D.C. police officers soon got involved, and at some point, one of them shot and killed the larger dog, described as either a pit bull or Shar-Pei mix.

The disagreement is in the details.

Aaron Block, 25, of Dupont Circle said he was walking his 2-year-old Shar-Pei mix, Parrot, up 18th Street when the dog suddenly turned around and bit a poodle that was passing by. He said he separated the two dogs — cutting his hand inside Parrot’s mouth in the process — and was subduing his dog when police arrived.

That’s when a D.C. police officer took over, putting his knee in the middle of Parrot’s back while he pulled the dog’s forelegs behind him, Block said. He said that the officer then grabbed Parrot by his neck and threw him over a banister at the Brass Knob antique store and that just as the dog righted itself, the officer pulled out his gun and fired. Parrot was “a full 12 to 15 steps away,” Block said, and was “making no aggressive overtures.” The dog, he noted, “doesn’t handle stairs well.”

“The officer drew his gun in an unnecessary act of cowboy gunslinging law enforcement and shot my dog amidst a crowd of thousands,” said Block, who was fostering Parrot while he was waiting to be adopted through the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. “The problems here are almost too numerous to count.”

It didn’t have to be this way. The police report has “pitbull” vomited all over it like they felt the need to justify their harsh reaction to something that could have been contained in a non-violent way. It breaks my heart that another beautiful animal had to leave the Earth in such a way.

That was my exact thought. As I read the article I got more and more pissed off with each mention of the word “pitbull”. Education not prejudice!

Police officers want to be held in respect so why do they not return it? They believe they are above the law and act way to often in harsh way as this. What scars will be left in the eyes of the children & people who witnessed this horrible act by a police officer? No wonder children these days don’t obey the law, they are just acting the way the law does. Parrot you look like a beautiful dog & my you RIP with our heavenly father & watch upon this wonderful man who looked after you until you tragic death. Karma will get Officer Fike!!!

He was waiting for a second chance at life and this idiot just took it away from him?! So typical of police officers who think they’re above the law, constantly going too far trying look like the tough guy with innocent animals and people but never there when they’re really needed!!! This makes me sick! No doubt he’ll get away with it too!!!!

Yet another reason I don’t trust the police. And how often do they find themselves at fault in a shooting’ anyway. RIP Parrot. My deepest condolences to his foster father. All the witnesses of this brutal event should be evaluated for PTSD and treated at the PD’s expense.

Now I don’t see any reason for all that i’m a dog trainer he had the dog pined he could of muzzeled the dog with his own belt now come on, what is up with peeps these days and pit bull thanks to the dog fighters they have a bad rap and stupid dog owners who don’t know how to train these powerful dogs. If you have a power breed make sure you are willing to get it train or look at what the breed needs, um lots of exercise, muzzle it if it is aggressive do something . Geeez peeps. pits are the most loyal go to my website and look at Chubbs that boy crys when I go to the bathroom and shut the door and he isn’t even my dog . He is the best powerful yes but I train and can handle a hundred pound dog, even when he is in fight mode because another dog groweled at him, so why did the poodle get bit thats crazy too.Know the dog you are handeling always
